1:51
all right guys welcome back to the live stream who knew we would do multiple live streams today
1:58
but um one thing that I do when I'm building a van is I'll actually walk
2:03
through and I'll record either some measurements or some ideas that I have because once you take
2:10
everything out of the van you kind of forget what you're doing so this is one of those instances where I think it'll
2:16
help you guys out if you are actually trying to plan something out um because
2:23
one thing I was saying earlier in today's live stream was uh you can have everything
2:30
perfect on paper so here I'll give you an example by the way you guys can see we
2:37
are talking about the fridge and microwave stack um so this is the final
2:43
measurements until so once I get these final measurements everything's coming
2:48
out getting cut painted and put together but so for
2:53
example this is a an engineering drawing that I put together um for the plan of
3:00
the van so these are all the measurements of the bed the fridge the microwave and so this is the perfect
3:09
world on paper so we got our measurements everything looks nice and neat but when we translate that to the
3:15
van there's all kinds of different things that happen so one thing that
3:21
happens as a challenge is uh this curvature of the van you know
3:27
you can have a a Plumb and you can Mark how much you come off but until you
3:33
actually put everything together and start to figure out how uh it's going to fit cuz for example the isotherm Cruise
3:42
130 fridge and I'm showing you all these drawings because I start from the
3:49
engineering side and then I move into more of the Practical side so right here is the engineering drawing for the
3:54
isotherm Cruise 130 and it tells me you know how much space that I have depthwise width height
4:03
uh the depth including the um uh cooling fan in the back of where
4:10
the compressor is so I know all that ahead of time however let me tell you a couple of
4:16
things that you may run into when you're doing your van um that's why I paused
4:21
and went over here
4:28
um let's move this out of the
4:35
way so first things first we have this
4:40
big panel so this panel as you can see comes from the top to the bottom but
4:47
behind here is just an open void that's filled with havlock so you know this can
4:53
deflect depending on where it is up to like a quart of an inch because essentially it's just a wall covered
4:58
wall covering panel and so that actually affects back here on the fridge
5:05
because even though that we calculated how far the fridge is off
5:10
from the bottom so for example I measured everything I measured the wall and then when I put everything in I
5:17
still needed to move this base a half inch forward so now that/ inch forward
5:22
has taken away this half inch in the Kitchen Gallery that I uh had planned to
5:27
have which is fine there's room to make up for that that's no problem we
5:32
actually have technically about an inch and 3/4 on each side that we can kind of
5:37
play with but remember if you ever needed to take this fridge out to repair it you need to make sure that the space
5:46
here between your Galley is enough room so that you can actually take the fridge out and either lift it up over here and
5:52
take it out the back of the van um which would be what you would have to do uh
5:58
let me grab tape measure yeah so think think also think about
6:03
like maintenance and repair this width right here we need enough room to get the fridge
6:10
out we still have that room but that half inch you know every inch matters in
6:16
a van so the half inch that I've just added to this um I'm kind of reworking
6:21
some stuff right now the good news is our base is perfect happy with the base um
6:30
the uh so let me start with the base and then I'm going to come I'll come up to
6:36
the top let me move the camera so we're going to do some
6:41
measurements and some numbers so that you guys can kind of plan you you can
6:46
plan this out on your own so remember right
6:52
here this is our our base and this is where our
6:57
drawer is going to be so we got a nice big drawer here um again until I finish
7:04
this up I got to finalize all the dimensions but this is all glued and screwed and super
7:10
stable um I got this panel back here that's just a placeholder so this placeholder will get cut
7:17
down um and this will go back in it'll probably only be about an an inch
7:28
uh probably about 2 in high and it's just going to go back there in the back
7:33
um again we need room for our wire access in the back and to move our wires
7:40
and communication cables also think about this you have a van you got these
7:45
nooks and crannies uh you need to be able to take this drawer out and clean behind it so
7:51
if I put this panel up here and let's say John and Susan had some stuff in the drawer and something fell out you know
7:58
we don't want a panel so high in the back you can't get to whatever fell back
8:04
there so I mean these are like the little details that I take into
8:10
consideration um so say our draw is perfect our base is nice so this base
8:16
right here U the this whole entire unit is going to be 24 in wide uh it'll actually probably come out
8:24
to 28th 24 and8 in um if you want me to
8:29
be technical as I am usually so 24 in and
8:34
an eth and that's just to make up because the bolic Birch um is actually
8:40
just a hair under half inch which actually makes it kind of
8:46
challenging too so maybe if your DIY stick with true half-inch plywood like
8:51
from The Big Box store which is okay um I just want to use the Balta
8:56
because I'm professionally building the van so I don't I need strength structure
9:02
and I don't want to have to worry about it warping and going back
9:07
um okay so that's our so 24 in essentially is the width and that is our
9:13
minimum width because uh up
9:19
here um I'll come back I'll finish the down down there up here we've got the
9:24
micro microwave shroud so let me take it off really quick
9:31
quick and the company sent [Music] me this is supposed to be stainless
9:39
steel but it was wrapped in a stainless steel labeled box so they didn't even know when they pull off the shelf that
9:45
it was not stainless still so I opened the box and it was black I told them to open the box check that stainless before
9:52
you send me the other one so I got another one coming but in the meantime we're going to use this as our
9:58
placeholder for our dimensions so you can see this uh is the uh frame
10:06
for the microwave microwave shroud the microwave kind of pokes out about an
10:11
inch um and believe it or not the microwave actually does bolt into this on both sides so it does rest on the
10:18
bottom but then these two bolts actually hold it in from coming
10:23
out so this is our basis for our width 24 in is plenty of room for the uh
10:31
isotherm fridge cuz if you guys are doing the isotherm Cruise 130 this fridge
10:41
is the max width of the edges right here are 22.9 in so I'll
10:49
just call it you know 23 so that gives you about half inch on each side um and
10:56
so that's how I kind of ma that out anyway uh so our base is pretty simple it's
11:02
just it's just a drawer this is our base coming up from that we've got um
11:09
our half inch Baltic Birch and that is what the fridge is actually sitting on so even though there
11:16
are these two uh screw holes on each
11:22
side uh the weight does need to be supported on the bottom of the fridge
11:32
um so we're going to come up back up to the top here where we
11:41
were come down just a bit okay and as we move up what I've
11:48
done is I've broken off two spacers and these two spacers are taped
11:53
in and so what they do is they are emulating the face frame that's going to go on here so
11:59
this allows me to verify my depth of the fridge and the reason that's so
12:04
important is because if I come up here to the back of the fridge I've got uh
12:10
this vent and I need to make sure that there's enough air circulation back here
12:17
so that the fridge doesn't overheat um because your vent's hot on a really
12:22
really hot day um you know the fridge is going to struggle so um what am I
12:30
recommendations use the fridge when you're in the van uh so if you're planning to go out for a weekend you
12:38
know you can turn the fridge on the day before you go on your trip get it all nice and cold um but then when you're
12:44
done with your trip my advice to you would be to turn the fridge off you know maybe crack the door uh let it air out
12:53
um but unless you're using this every single day uh I wouldn't actually
12:59
uh keep the fridge running all the time but if you're full-time and you're going to be out of the van going to the
13:05
grocery store um you're going to have you're going to have the vent max van open and you'll have air circulating in
13:12
the van so it's not that this won't run if the van is you know 90° or 100°
13:18
inside it's uh you don't want to tax the compressor to work so hard to overcome
13:23
that temper temperature differential so if you're going to leave your van like go hike or just be out of the van you
13:30
know keep the vent fan on um so it can be hot in the van just remember that you
13:37
know this this fridge is not it's a very very good fridge but um you know stuff's
13:43
not invincible so you know kind of help it out if the van standing around like you know 80 90
13:50
degrees or something on a really hot day with it's there is ventilation um I wouldn't worry about it but that's just
13:56
more so that you can extend the life of this um so another thing to add to that is
14:05
back here this piece of wood I'm not actually going to I'm going to cut a notch out in the back so that air from
14:13
the drawer can come up and kind of convection wise come up through the back
14:19
we've got a nice opening here see I can almost stick my arm through here I can't do it here but down here I can pretty
14:25
much stick my arm through that airspace we're going to keep that airspace in the back and then it's going to come
14:31
up uh we got about let's see how much room we got between the fan and the
14:37
panel so we've got about almost an inch about 3/4 of an inch right now so 3/4 of
14:44
an inch behind the fan all right now I'm getting to where I
14:50
was before I hit record on the live stream today so what I'm showing you guys right now is I'm marking where I
14:59
want this uh cutout to be behind the fridge
15:04
here so I've got a permanent marker and I'm tracing uh back behind the uh
15:19
microwave and basically what I'm doing is I'm going to cut out uh I'm going to cut
15:27
out a the back of this panel here so I'm only going to need I'm only going to
15:32
mount the Shelf um or I need it to support the
15:37
microwave and then this back section here I'm uh I'm actually going
15:45
to cut out any unnecessary Uh Wood back
15:53
[Music] [Applause] here
16:08
um hold on one
16:25
second okay I'm back
16:32
let's see let's get this back right here I'm actually going all right so
16:40
back behind here I'm going to I'm going to cut out all the space back here that is
16:48
not uh necessary to hold the microwave so there's a big like a L-shaped panel back here I'm going to
16:54
cut that out and that way I have ventilation for the fridge and the
17:00
microwave and then what I'll do is I'll I'll finalize the top here
17:07
um trying to see if I can give you guys some visual elements
17:14
here so imagine let
17:23
see so we're going to add another inch and a half uh to this because
17:30
as you can see this Frame is too close to the fridge so if
17:38
this Frame was another inch and a half higher um then it would look it' look better
17:47
but it wouldn't be so high that uh you can't actually operate
17:52
this so that's going to go probably about right there
18:00
and then what we have is in the remaining let's see what that will be
18:05
like so this will come up here okay then that'll give us about a 6
18:10
inch thing up top now here's what's interesting there's 6 in there's 6 in in
18:18
the front but when we come to the back there's really no room so even though it
18:24
looks like there's some room the the curvature of the ceiling coming down takes all that away so you can't use
18:30
this for a shelf or anything I don't want to I want it to use it for V for air circulation so there's going to be a
18:37
panel uh at the top and then we'll have like
18:42
a kind of like a routered out like a l louvered thing up here and then that'll
18:48
finish off the top and so that way we've got air circulating um and that's the best that
18:56
we can do without having to uh so for
19:03
example let's get this other piece of
19:11
foam so here's our other wall
19:23
panel okay
19:30
so
19:44
this okay so what we don't want to do is
19:50
we want to maximize our ventilation here so we don't have to cut a hole right here
19:56
because um and a perfect I mean if looks didn't matter it'd be great to put a
20:03
hole here but you don't want to do that um so we're going to just make sure we
20:09
got some nice convection we got some hot air being to escape out the top cool air
20:14
being able to come out in the bottom and that that my van is like that so I know that that
20:20
works but right here we're going to have uh the Eco flow and the other controls
20:27
here so we need to make sure that uh we got room for them and the cable
20:33
wise in the back and um yeah so that's pretty much that's the fridge stack
20:42
uh see where I put my phone
20:54
at see if you guys have any questions
21:02
okay anyway this is uh it's pretty much what I'm working with right now so I
21:08
finalized my measurement here by another inch and a half spacing then now I've got plenty of head
21:15
room up here so that that hot air has a way to to get out um now the good news
21:22
about the microwave is that when you buy a RV specific
21:27
microwave this uh piece of aluminum that's bolted down here or sheet metal
21:33
galvaniz sheet metal at the bottom this is uh this allows this to be to take in
21:41
from the bottom and blow out through the top so you're not going to get any of that like nasty kind of residue you
21:47
would have on a stove operated microwave to wear you got like grease kind
21:54
of uh forming when you cook like the steam or whatever the steam is actually
21:59
going to come out of this top vent um and then it'll be taken in this
22:05
bottom so that's why when you see these grills they have these louvers is
22:10
because they actually are taking air in the bottom and then blowing it out through the top or vice
22:17
versa um so that's why these are that's why you want an RV one and you don't want a household one it is I know it's
22:24
tempting because the household microwaves are much cheaper
22:30
um uh this wasn't too expensive this was like 310 bucks which I think is a really
22:35
good deal it's it's it's a convection microwave too it's not just a regular microwave but it's got convection
22:42
feature um now I wouldn't recommend convection for a van because uh it does
22:48
take a lot of power so um like for me
22:54
standing like the 700 watt range would be ideal but hey if you got the battery
23:00
Bank capacity and you got a nice sun outside and all that stuff you know
23:05
launch on a nice sunny day you could Crank That Thing Up and um uh I mean JN and sus are going be fine to use this
23:11
with their ecoflow power system but just know you know stuff's not invincible so if you're
23:18
going to cook a turkey in there for Thanksgiving I maybe maybe don't do that but uh yes for a conviction oven I
23:27
think this is a good one um it is uh I haven't used it yet so I'm
23:33
not going to uh tell you the features but um the format footprint and the fact
23:41
that it has that is a true RV microwave um it's from I'll tell you it's from Rec
23:47
Rec Pro and uh stainless steel
23:52
um and see what other info on I think it's 1100 watt um
23:59
microwave but just remember that's going to be running straight off your inverter so let's just say let's just say this is
24:06
a 1200 watt uh let's say it's a 1500 watt microwave
24:13
let's just make it up for math so this is a 1500 watt microwave and uh actually
24:19
hold take that back eight 765 let's
24:26
see okay let's say this is a 1,200 watt microwave and then we have a 1,800 watt
24:32
induction stove so you could be cooking something in the microwave and running the induction stove um that would be
24:39
about your max inverter pull at one given time now that does not count any
24:46
12vt appliances because they are not ran by the inverter so uh the John and Susan
24:53
can cook something or heat something up in the microwave while they're cooking on the induction stove their surge
24:59
capacity and inverter capacity is enough to do those two things
25:05
simultaneously um but just kind of do that math in your head where uh if you wanted to have the
25:13
hot water heater on and put something in the fridge and cook on the induction um
25:18
you might not be able to do all three of those things at the same time CU you you do have some limits
25:25
so uh what I would do is if you need need to have hot water for some reason while you're cooking or whatever heat
25:32
the hot water up first let it cycle through then it'll cut itself off then
25:38
you can cook heat stuff in the microwave so you kind of have to play around with uh how much power you're using but um
25:46
yeah I'll digress and get back to what we're talking about so you want to have this type of
25:51
frame it helps you measure your width mounts the microwave and gives you
25:57
ventilation especially when you're in type a situation where tight quarters um
26:02
and you're wanting to maximize your use of space uh so let's talk about the depth
26:10
and then a couple other measurements and then I will I have to get back to work um so
26:17
again this is going to be 24 in wide when it's all said and done the depth so
26:23
this might be the magical number you guys have been trying to figure out the depth of this face of
26:31
the uh fridge to the wall panel is exactly
26:38
23 and 12 in um now I did that on purpose uh you know you I can go in
26:46
about another half inch but I I want more clearance on the ventilation so I
26:51
pushed it out another half inch so it was 23 now I made it 23 and 1/2 so this
26:56
is a 23 and 1/2 deep by 24 so it's almost almost a
27:03
square um but we want to again make sure we have that ventilation in the back so
27:09
let's go uh we side went back uh back to
27:14
front and then side to side let's go top to bottom or bottom to top so from the bottom floor to the level that this is
27:22
resting on for the refrigerator is 21 in and then we're we're going to add to
27:28
the 21 in we're going to come up here and this is uh it was 31 but I'm
27:36
going to make it 31 32 and 1 12 33 so 33 in will be the
27:44
new uh height for where the microwave goes in here and
27:53
then let see let's see so 30 say right an in and a half inch and a
28:00
half so that leaves us um 10
28:09
in um but then we have to subtract the face
28:15
frame so almost 2 and 1/2 in so 10 9 8 7
28:20
and A2 so there's about seven and a half inches from the ceiling to the bottom of
28:29
the microwave panel but if we move it to the
28:34
back let's this say what that is
28:40
yeah so those are some rough numbers maybe just to help you out if you doing
28:45
this sort of thing um so my next steps off camera is I'm
28:50
going to double up this 2x4 to get my new position and the reason I'm doing all
28:56
this is I want to translate all these measurements to my foam templates so
29:04
that way um I know where I need to mount
29:10
these shelves when I take everything back off uh so just like I made this live stream I'm talking to the camera I
29:16
can go back and see all those measurements that I just told you guys um so I don't have to keep doing this
29:22
over and over again plus it's on YouTube I I can go back and check it whenever I want to but um that is pretty much it
29:32
now down here this is just pretty simple this yellow cord is the microwave
29:39
um and I told you guys if you wire in a lit plug you'll always know when this
29:46
plug has power and you'll always be able to troubleshoot this easily so this is a lighted plug so when this plug it's
29:53
power um it actually lights up orange just got a little LED inside
29:59
then we've got our uh W basto we've got our 12vt for our
30:05
fridge um the only cable that's missing that I have to run um because I don't want to run it till I
30:12
already have a path for it but it's the community it's a network communication cable for the ecof flow so as you can
30:18
imagine it was hard to find out how where I'm going to put this how much network cable line I needed to feed so
30:25
now that I kind of know where I'm going to put the uh the Eco
30:31
flow
30:36
um which I may like for it to go right here so
30:45
might chat with John and Susan and see if this is the two that's the spot that
30:50
we want to do it um yeah the only challenge here is this
30:56
w basto communic ation
31:03
line anyway that is for a different video um all right where's my phone see
31:11
if you guys had any questions here oh hey Thomas thanks for
31:19
watching a good source to look at RV microwave options uh so Bill the uh this
31:27
is from Rec Pro and um by the way they have excellent
31:33
customer service I will have to say there was a big old orange label in the box and said you have an issue called this number I called it somebody
31:40
instantly picked up and I said hey this this uh I need another one of these and
31:48
they just took care of it uh so Rec Pro um I think that's the best cost
31:54
effective RV my personal favorite is the Contour brand um I think they're very
32:01
stylish uh they come in a very small form factor um we had the space for this one so
32:09
that's why I just got it for John and Susan because I mean we already did all this
32:15
so I mean we might as well maximize the space of whatever fridge we put in there and they had mentioned convection um
32:22
during our consultation a while back and I was like you know what let's let's just do a convection microwave so fills
32:28
up the space it's the maximum space we can use let's just do it
32:34
um you we've got the power bank to run it so we did we did the rec Pro now
32:41
there are are so with RV microwaves again the the first thing you want to
32:46
find out is does it have one of these I didn't like the way these things looked in the beginning I thought they were
32:52
kind of tacky but now I know their function of the ventilation and exhaust
32:59
um so I'm a I'm I'm a fan of these but it
33:04
needs to be stainless because that looks nice uh but I'm a fan of this because of the way that it mounts the refrigerator
33:11
uh microwave in also the microwave sticks out about an inch and that allows it so that the door can open in and out
33:18
um and not bind on this Edge so I thought the microwave poking out was also kind of a weird thing until
33:25
I figured out its function so everything kind of makes sense in the end but yeah M recommendation is get a
33:33
RV designed microwave with those ducts ducting for
33:39
the intake and exhaust so you're not you don't have all this stuff kind of blowing out the back of the microwave if
33:45
you've ever had a microwave that you've been used for a long time the back of it has like a sticky residue where the all
33:51
the Steam and whatever you've been cooking in there goes on the back and so
33:56
um that would be my example uh so Rec Pro
34:02
is cost effective you know budget wise I think it's good it's budget but you know
34:10
they have people that actually pick up the phone so I'm okay with that um for
34:15
me style-wise I think the Contour brand looks really cool the Contour microwave
34:21
is what's in all the storytellers um now by the way the Contour is not as
34:28
powerful as this microwave so John and Susan's microwave is almost twice as powerful and its convection The Contours
34:37
they're around 700 watts and uh they're designed for the small purpose areas so
34:44
if that makes sense um but yeah Bill hope that answer your question and uh thank you so much
34:50
for watching the channel love people tuning in checking out the channel um
34:56
anything else
35:01
yeah that is about it we are going to keep on trucking here um I'm going to
35:07
cut my last pieces of wood I'm going to come up here measure where I'm going to put this uh
35:17
final Mount up here I guess you would call it um there's going to be one bolt
35:22
into this unit it's going to be back here so there's going to be one stainless steel Bolt showing on the
35:28
other side and uh what that is is that's a safety item
35:34
so I'm going to have uh we've got aluminum bracket so 8020 aluminum
35:41
bracket and it's extremely strong bracket um that bracket is going to tie
35:46
into the riv nut and the ceiling and it's going to bolt through the Baltic Birch and that's just a for safety it's
35:54
going to make sure that the top is really locked into the van and you know
36:00
in the event of an accident or whatever it's going to uh you know help us to
36:07
control this this whole this whole thing here um that's a good place for me to
36:13
end how am I going to secure this to the van so multiple stages here at the
36:21
bottom of the band we have the floor and we have those two 2x4s that are part of
36:26
the B botom so uh we'll have
36:32
four uh angle brackets that are bolted into that and those four actually I'm
36:39
probably going to do six so that six are going to bolt down the
36:45
foundation um this piece of wood right here it's going to extend back and then
36:50
we'll probably have four brackets uh and those will be sheet mded um
36:58
screwed into the chassis of the van back here so we've got our base bolted in
37:06
we've got the back at the base so that's our forward motion as we come up
37:13
here um we'll have two brackets on both of the Baltic Birch again that's for the
37:19
front movement and then uh side to side we've got
37:24
our uh panel back here our partition ition is what
37:29
is uh this is our big structural panel going from the bed system into the
37:36
kitchen galy so this is going to be uh bolted
37:42
into the uh pretty much the structure as the bed system is which is already Riv
37:48
nutted into the wall so this is extremely strong it's
37:53
loose right now cuz I don't have anything tied down but this uh will
37:59
be the panel over here will be bolted into this and then this will be bolted
38:04
into this and then pretty much this fridge stack and the kitchen galy will be all kind of like one piece of bolted
38:12
in Furniture um that's one reason this is going of
38:19
taking some time is because I got to mock it up take it apart do a first coat of paint take up
38:27
the floor protection bring it back in assemble it tape off the floor and then do the final
38:35
two coats of paint and then we'll hook everything up so it's kind of the
38:41
process and then yeah that Riv nut up here into the ceiling that's just a little that's just more insurance so
38:48
want to make sure we get as much insurance as we can all right I've got to get back to
38:54
work want to thank everybody for watching this live stream um this is a good way for me to kind of
39:00
capture my thoughts before I take this all apart again uh cuz this is actually
39:07
um this this is not actually taking as long the catching galy will take longer than this will which is uh that was
39:14
actually surprising but it makes sense this is basically just stacking things up and bolting them
39:19
in but um yeah this is uh this is our fridge
39:25
and microwave stack now you guys will notice that I've got to
39:31
also reverse the door so the door is opening the wrong way um that's easy to
39:37
do so all you have to do is there's uh three screws down here
39:43
and a a bracket and you just swap sides and then up here you do the same thing
39:50
swap sides it's not hard um oh yeah Pro tip
39:56
when you go to I'm not going to do this yet because well actually I'm I might do
40:03
it when you take the door off to change the sides go ahead and take off this
40:09
protective uh sticker
40:14
because they wrap it around the inside so this is wrapped all the way in the
40:19
other side so if you tear it off the front you actually can't get into this crack here unless you take the door off
40:27
so it's kind of a pain in the butt but I found out that the hard way um what
40:36
else oh I think that's it um yeah I'm going to take a little break here before
40:42
I get back to it but thank you guys so much for watching U make sure you guys are subscribed uh turn on the notification
