How to Replace a Popcorn Ceiling
Replacing a popcorn ceiling can drastically update the look of any room, making it feel more modern and fresh. Start by preparing the room: cover the floors and furniture with plastic sheets to protect them from dust and debris. If your ceiling is painted, you’ll need to scrape off the paint before you begin removing the popcorn texture. Use a large sponge and a putty knife to gently dampen and scrape off the texture, working in small sections. After removing the popcorn texture, inspect the ceiling for any imperfections, filling holes or cracks with joint compound. Sand the surface smooth once the compound has dried. Finish by applying a coat of primer and then a fresh coat of paint. For a quicker alternative, consider installing a new ceiling covering like drywall or ceiling tiles over the old popcorn ceiling.
