What do numbers mean in motor oil? 0w20, 5w30…

SAE motor oil classification is pretty misleading. This is the system of engine oil marking that has digits and letters to denote viscosity and optimal working temperatures of a certain type of oil. My vehicle, for example, has the 5w30 type of oil. Does it mean that it only should be used in winter because of the letter W in its SAE? Or does it mean it will only be OK in the temperatures over -5 degrees Celsius? Or does it mean that you shouldn’t use this oil when it’s hotter than +30 degrees Celsius?
