SLOVAKIA-RUSSIA TALKS: Fico Reopens Moscow Channel as Oil, Gas and Nuclear Fuel Top Agenda
Oct 16, 2026
Slovakia is preparing to revive a dormant cooperation forum with Russia, raising fresh questions about Moscow's influence within the European Union following Viktor Orbán's defeat in Hungary. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said the meeting of the Russian-Slovak Intergovernmental Commission is scheduled for November 25 in Moscow. According to a Russian government note obtained by POLITICO, the proposed agenda includes Russian oil and gas supplies, nuclear fuel for Slovak power plants, cultural cooperation and the treatment of Russian athletes. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár defended Bratislava's diplomatic approach, saying the country maintains dialogue with nations interested in pragmatic cooperation in Slovakia's national interests. The commission has been dormant since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The planned talks come as EU leaders prepare to discuss energy prices and support for Kyiv, while Moscow seeks to rebuild international ties. Ukraine has said its drone strikes have disabled 51% of Russia's oil-refining capacity, a claim attributed to Kyiv.
