Residents in Marseille, France's second-largest city, say open crack use has increased sharply in parts of the city, with drug users gathering near homes and public spaces and discarded drug paraphernalia left on streets. Residents near Saint-Charles station and in the Chapitre neighbourhood described nightly shouting, fights and disturbances, while one local campaign has been dubbed "A Tsunami of Drugs." Agathe, a Saint-Charles resident, said drug use had risen since last winter and "exploded" from May, which she linked to the closure of a local reception centre. Antoine, who helped launch the petition, said residents had contacted the prefecture, mayor and public prosecutor without receiving an official response. Marseille city officials have said Mayor Benoît Payan wrote to Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu on May 28 seeking a dedicated interministerial response.
