GERMAN PARLIAMENT DIVIDED: Should Germany Pay Billions for Namibia Genocide? | Times Now World
Oct 15, 2026
German lawmakers clashed in the Bundestag on Wednesday over calls for reparations and an official apology for the colonial-era genocide of Ovaherero and Nama people in what was then German South West Africa, now Namibia. The debate highlighted divisions over a proposed €1.1 billion reconstruction and development programme spanning 30 years, which Germany announced in 2021 after formally recognising the atrocities as genocide. Thomas Rachel of the Christian Democratic Union said he remained ashamed of the suffering inflicted under German colonial rule, while Green Party lawmaker Jamila Schafer urged parliament to explicitly recognise the genocide and other colonial crimes against the Damara and San communities and seek forgiveness from their descendants. Ronald Glaser of the Alternative for Germany rejected the existing agreement, arguing that Germany should withdraw and commission a new historical investigation. German colonial troops killed tens of thousands of Ovaherero and Nama between 1904 and 1908, with victims driven into the desert, imprisoned in camps and subjected to forced labour. Representatives of affected communities have criticised the proposed agreement and called for direct reparations and a greater role in negotiations. No decision was reached on Wednesday, with the proposals referred to the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee.
