FRANCE REJECTS 'Global South' Label as Barrot Announces Major Map Overhaul | Times Now World
Sep 4, 2026
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Friday that terms such as the "Global South" and "collective West" were political constructs that failed to reflect the way countries align on international issues, arguing that the key divide was between states supporting multilateralism and those rejecting a rules-based order. Speaking at a diplomacy conference in Paris, Barrot also announced that France's foreign ministry would abandon the Mercator projection in favour of maps that more accurately represent the relative areas of continents. He cited the distortion of territories at high latitudes, noting that Greenland can appear comparable in size to Africa despite Africa being about 14 times larger. The move comes amid African-led criticism of the Mercator projection and calls for maps that better reflect the continent's actual geographical scale.
