EU GRAIN CRISIS: 'I Want Putin to Attack Us' as Bulgarian Grain Piles Up, and Danube Runs Low
Aug 26, 2026
A severe drought and disruption caused by Russia's war in Ukraine are squeezing grain exports through the Danube, leaving warehouses across northwestern Bulgaria packed with wheat. More than 90% of grain in the Vidin region was reportedly still in storage as of August 19, while low water levels have restricted barge traffic and increased pressure on road and rail routes toward Romania's Constanța port. Ukrainian agricultural exports have also increasingly relied on the same corridors after disruption to Black Sea shipping. Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotsky said exports between August 1 and 12 totalled about 590,000 tonnes, around 30% of the required volume.
