Hi everyone it's Karen from the Georgie Grandma
0:06
Welcome back to my channel. Hope you're doing well. It's very grey outside today. I am so sick of the rain
0:13
As anybody else sick of the rain? If you're watching this, it'll later date
0:18
It is the 3rd of August, 2023 and I don't know what's happened to summer
0:25
It's just constantly raining and it's very grey outside. which leads me nicely into today's video
0:32
which is all about grey hair. So I thought I'd talk about why I decided to just let my hair grow naturally grey
0:43
I'll tell you about some products that I use. I'll tell you about the types of colours that I now suit
0:51
that maybe I didn't before and colours that now I don't suit that maybe I did before
0:57
I decided to let my hair grow out fully grey about probably about two years ago now
1:06
I really should have done it during lockdown but I didn't. I did it after lockdown
1:13
So I was so sick of the grey roots. Really sick of them
1:19
I've been gone grey since I was early 20s. You know, I found my first few grey hairs
1:24
I had very, very dark brown hair when I was young. younger and yeah I started to go grey quite early and I've probably been you know mostly
1:35
grey for about the last at least 15 years I would say not completely grey but a lot of my
1:43
hair was grey so I just I continue to have it died sometimes I would box dye it myself it always
1:49
was a disaster and most of the time I went to you know the hairdressers or the hair salon whatever
1:56
want to call it, to have it dyed. And the appointments got closer and closer together
2:04
And it was ending up, I was going every three to four weeks to have me, you know, my roots done
2:09
And it was just ridiculous. I was spending a fortune. It can't be good for your hair to keep having that done
2:16
So Paige, my hairdresser, she was saying, you know, maybe it's time to stop dying it
2:24
and just think about growing it out. So that's what I did
2:29
This is the colour I ended up with, which is mostly like a white silver colour
2:34
You can see I do still have some very dark bits in it
2:39
It's more so at the back. I'll put a picture in here of the back of my head
2:44
if I remember I'd to take it. But yeah, I quite like the colour it grew out to be
2:50
And how I did it was, she started, the hairdresser, I started to put more blonde highlights in my hair
2:59
So as the grey grew out, she stopped doing the roots and just put like pieces of blonde
3:04
through my hair. And as it started to grow out, the roots were less and less noticeable every time
3:11
And then eventually we just stopped putting the, you know, the colour in
3:16
And this is what I ended up with. So yeah, like I say, I am quite happy with the colour
3:22
it turned out to be. My nana was completely white from you know a fairly early
3:28
age probably 50 something like that and she had lovely hair I was hoping it would
3:34
be the same colour. It's not quite that, not quite there but maybe it will be when I'm
3:40
a little bit older. My grandson not keen he says grandma you've got old hair
3:45
I says oh thanks very much does that mean I'm old? He went no you've just got old
3:50
hair and my granddaughter Harry H's who's four she said grandma you look beautiful
3:56
you look like I think it was she said she looked like Anna off um is it Anna or
4:01
what's the one Elsa? Which one's got a volunteer you look like Elsa off
4:05
Frozen I thought well I don't think I quite look like that but thanks very much Harriet I'll take it I do get a little bit of not pressure but you know Warren
4:15
will say I used to like a hair when it was like a reddy colour or
4:20
My daughter will say, well, it did make you look a bit younger when you had darker hair
4:25
I know the mean well, but I really don't want to go back to dye in my hair dark
4:32
It's just, it's too much. And I don't actually think it fits the tone of my skin anymore
4:40
I just think it makes us look, being dark makes us look washed out
4:44
more so than being grey makes us washed out So I show you a few products that I using because what I found was as the hair got more natural
4:59
it became coarser and frizzy, and it's quite thin as well. I've always had quite thin hair
5:07
but as I've got older, it's got thinner. So I used quite a few supermarket shampoos
5:13
that never really seemed to work. I still used to seem to end up with really dry frizz
5:20
And I came across this product online, and I think I've showed it before
5:25
And it's actually called White Hot Shampoo and Conditioner. This one is the glorious shampoo
5:37
So this is just the ordinary shampoo that you would use on a daily basis
5:42
They also sell the brilliant shampoo, which if you've got grey hair, it gives it a kind of a brightening boost to lighten it up
5:54
And it gives you that more white look rather than the yellowy colour that it can look if you don't use this on a regular basis
6:00
So I maybe use that once or twice a week. I tend to wash my hair every other day only because it just goes really, really flat if I don't
6:11
like I say, it's quite thin. So if I don't wash my hair and do something with it, it's just no good
6:16
So I tend to wash it every other day. So those are the two shampoos
6:20
They also do the luminous conditioner as well, which says for flex and shine, for lustrous white and grey hair
6:30
And I really do like this product. It really makes my hair feel soft
6:35
It's still frizzy. It's still got a frizz in it, but I straighten my hair
6:39
otherwise the humidity I would look ridiculous but this these products really make my hair feel
6:47
soft and smooth and just it feels bouncy they also do a haven't been asked to promote these
6:56
products I'm not affiliated to these products I'm not being paid to talk about these products
7:00
I just found them online and I've been using them I'd say for about 18 months now and I really
7:06
really like them. If anyone's interested to have a look I'll leave the link in the
7:11
comment in the description box below so you can go and have a look. They also do an
7:15
intense luster hair mask which I'm almost out. I need to get some more which is a
7:22
purple colour as well. The purple shampoo in this purple hair mask don't make your
7:29
hair purple it's just I think there's something in the purpleness that brings out
7:34
the white in your hair. They also do a shushing cream, which I bought this in a pack when I first got it
7:43
I've repurchased the shampoes and conditioners again, but the shushin cream I haven't because basically I don't know what to do with it
7:51
I'm really rubbish. It's styling my hair. Rubbish in blow-drying my hair, rubbish in any kind of styling
7:58
When my hair was a little bit longer, I tried to put a curl in it. I tried several different tools, and it never worked
8:04
So I'm rubbish with styling my hair. So this shushing cream, it just says for definition and I can't read what that says in a flash, but I never know what to do with it
8:20
Sometimes I just put some through with my fingers and just, I don't know, I'm not sure what it's supposed to do
8:26
And I also got in the pack came the Lifeshine Oil, which I have actually used
8:33
I haven't repurchased it. I haven't used a lot of it. do use that occasionally just if my hair feels extra dry. I'll put some of that on and you put that
8:42
on when your hair's damp. So yeah, I really do like those products and I haven't come across
8:48
anything else in the supermarkets. They do as good a job as that. They are a bit more expensive
8:55
I think the shampoo is about 14 pound a tube but it does last us quite a long time because
9:01
you don't need a lot of it. So yeah, I highly recommend that if you do have, you know, white
9:06
grey hair. It does work. Something else I also use, which you might laugh, but it is the bright
9:16
shampoo colour. The brand is bright and it's called a pastel purple and it's just a shampoo
9:22
It just washes out but it does, it's supposed to make a hair pastel purple. Basically
9:30
it doesn turn my hair purple You can put it on as just a shampoo and rinse it off after three minutes and it just gives kind of a it makes my hair look a little bit whiter but then you can put it on dry and leave it for up to 45 minutes
9:46
and it's supposed to make your hair pastel purple. I'll put a photo in here because I have used it a few times and I quite like it
9:52
although Warren says it's my purple rinse. Remember the purple rinse be great when you were young guy that I'm never going to be doing that
9:59
But actually, I think that's quite fun. One of the things I've noticed is I've got all
10:05
I don't care what people think. You know, if I like it, I like it
10:09
I'm not bothered. But yeah, this is, and this is, again, it's a purple
10:14
I'll show you what it looks like when it's on my hair when I'm doing it, and then I'll show you what it looks like afterwards
10:21
And it does give kind of a lilac-y tint, but I think that's quite fun
10:26
They have a blue one and a pink one as well. I don't know about the pink, but I might try the blue, see what that's like
10:32
But I wouldn't put anything permanent in my hair. because I'm not going through the roots thing again
10:39
But yeah, I find that quite fun. So as well since I went to grey
10:43
I've found colours of suited as, or not suited us, in a different way
10:50
When I had dark hair, I've had all kinds of colours on my hair
10:56
I've been dark brown, I've been black, I've been like a plummy purple colour
11:01
I've been a red colour, I've been an orange colour before, every single colour
11:08
But as I've gone grey, I found different colours are better on me
11:14
Now, there is ways of telling what colours are going to suit you
11:19
you know, what colour skin tone you've got, and then that tells you what colours you should be wearing
11:25
So just a few tips. I wrote a blog post a few months ago about this
11:29
so I did a lot of research on it. I'll link to the blog post below if you want to have a read
11:34
but there are ways of telling what colour, you know, if you're a cool skin tone or a warm skin tone or a neutral skin tone
11:41
The first one is your veins. If you've got blue veins, you're likely to be cool skin tone
11:48
And if you've got green veins, you're likely to be a warm skin tone
11:52
I think mine are kind of in the middle. So I'm maybe neutral, but I think I'm leaning more towards cool because they do look more blue than green
12:04
The other thing to think about is what are you like in the sun
12:09
If you tan well, then you're likely to be your warm skin tone
12:13
And if you like me and you just burn, you're likely to be a cool skin tone
12:18
I'm definitely not a sunbathe because it doesn't suit my skin. Another way of telling you your skin tone is do you suit gold or silver jewelry
12:29
I've got silver earrings in today. and I just find silver works much better with my complexion than gold
12:37
I don't have a lot of gold. I don't think I've got any gold necklaces
12:42
I've got a few gold earrings that have got like a crystal in the middle
12:50
so it's got a coloured crystal. But I really prefer silver. I just think it looks better
12:54
So if silver looks better on you, you're a cool skin tone
12:58
gold looks better on you, then you're a warm skin tone. The colour of your eyes can tell your skin tone
13:05
If you've got a grey blue eye or a blue eye, you're likely to be cool toned
13:09
If your eyes are brown or green, you're likely to be warm toned
13:13
My eyes, my eyes actually look navy blue on camera, but they're like a grey blue, so definitely a cool skin tone
13:22
And the last way you can tell which skin tone you've got is
13:26
trying different neutral colours. So if you suit a bright white, t-shirt or a, like, you know, a jet black t-shirt, you're likely to be cool skin tone
13:38
If you suit more creams and ivories and grays, you're more likely to be your warm skin tone
13:45
These are the guidelines anyway. That's what came from all of the research I did into it
13:50
But to be honest, the best way of telling what colours you suit best is to go out and try them
13:56
You know, try them up against your skin. Do they suit you? Do they not suit you? If you're not sure, take it up
14:01
picture and show a friend, they'll tell you if it suits you or not. But if you've got a cool skin
14:06
tone, you suit more bright jewel colours. And if you're a warm skin tone, you're supposed to suit
14:13
more earthy colours. And I think that's kind of true for me. I definitely suit more dual
14:19
toned colours since I gone grey I possibly did before I went grey but I never really thought about it I think when I was when I was dark I did suit the dual tones but I also could get away with the earthy tones as well Now I don think I can I love me in this colour
14:39
I put a few pictures in here and you know you can see what you think. Green I don't wear a lot
14:46
of green but I don't think I look too bad in that. Pinks, reds, you know, purples, deep purple. I do suit those
14:55
types of colours. I look terrible in yellow but I always did look terrible in yellow. I just
15:01
I'm not a yellow person. So it is just a case of trial and area, you know, trying things up against
15:08
your skin and seeing what they look like. I definitely don't suit the beigey tones. I'll put a
15:14
picture in here of me and I think this was maybe last year. I went to a Charlotte Tilbury
15:20
Masterclass thing with my daughter and I had just bought this dress, this beige and
15:25
black kind of spotty dress and I love the dress but when I saw the photograph I thought I just
15:32
look completely beige just from head to tone look beige I don't know whether I would have got away
15:37
with it if I'd wore a brighter lip I used to wear a lot of peachy tone lipsticks or like a like a
15:45
peachy to rusty tone and I really don't suit that anymore which I don't know it's strange I mean
15:52
obviously you know when your hair goes gray maybe the color of your skin kind of changes as well
15:59
I definitely think that I need to wear not more makeup but I think I need to wear brighter makeup
16:07
and I think since I've gone great I've definitely played around with makeup more I've played around
16:12
with colors on my eyes um I suit more brighter colors on my eyes so I'll I'll wear like a you know
16:20
like purples and greens and I wear a brighter blush and it definitely brightens my face up as if I
16:29
when I've got no makeup on everybody's going to look bad with their well not bad but you
16:35
don't look quite as bright with no makeup on but that was also the case before I went grey
16:40
so yeah but I've definitely played around with makeup more since I went to grey and found this
16:46
like I say not more makeup but brighter makeup works better with grey hair
16:53
So that was all I wanted to say really. If you've got any questions about grey hair
16:59
just ask us in the comments below. I'm happy to answer them
17:03
Do I regret going grey? A few people have said that. Do you regret going grey
17:11
Do you not think you should dye your back? Sometimes I do
17:15
Sometimes I think I don't like it. I look old. it makes us feel old sometimes, especially if I don't have makeup on
17:25
Silly I know, but sometimes it does make us feel older. And when you're not feeling your best and you look in the mirror and you just think
17:33
I do think, I've got to wish I had dark hair again. But would I really dye my hair back
17:38
No, I wouldn't. I definitely would not go back to being dark
17:44
Possibly, maybe he's put some other kind of highlights in it. just to brighten it up a bit, but I'm not considering it at the moment
17:54
I mentioned it to my hairdresser the last time I was there and she went, no, what do you want to do that for
17:59
And my daughter-in-law also said the same thing. No, absolutely not. But it is my, you know, my choice
18:07
If I wanted to go, you know, if I wanted to go and dye in black, then I will do
18:11
But at the moment, I'm quite happy with it being this colour. You know, there's lots of famous people got grey hair and they look great in it
18:19
So what do you, what's your opinion? Are you going grey and you're still dying it
18:25
Would you just completely stop dying and just be naturally grey? Let us know in the comments below because I would like to know it
18:33
It is interesting. So that's all I've got by today. I hope you found that interesting
18:38
It was just a quick video about why I went grey. I'll see you again on Sunday with the Transatlantic Housewives Sunday Sunshine Show
18:49
And this Sunday we have, we're all each doing different recipes in our air fryers
18:56
because I've found an air friar an absolute boon in the last year
19:02
And everybody's doing something different. And what I'm going to do is some low carb snacks for your movie night at home
19:09
So I hope you come and watch us on Sunday morning at half seven and see what we're all cooking
19:15
So like I said, thanks so much for watching. I'll see you soon. and bye for now
