Okay, continuing on with our preparing for the interview series, our last video covers
0:07
tips to perform well in the actual interview. Okay so to start with, you're going to want to familiarize yourself with the interview format
0:16
Now in subsequent videos, we talk about types of interviews. So if you can ask questions ahead of time perhaps of the HR folks or any individual you're
0:27
corresponding with about the position, you can ask questions about the format for the
0:32
interview so you can prepare yourself ahead of time for that. So again, understanding the format that you're going to be whether it's a group of people
0:40
interviewing you, two, three individuals, whether it's going to be one on one, who you're meeting
0:45
with, etc. can help you prepare for the type of interview that you're going to have
0:53
Now you want to try and find out relevant information about the interviewer Just like when you networking and just like when you delivering your elevator pitch you trying to endear yourself to that person You trying to make them want to help you in some way or form
1:11
So if you understand things about them, if you're able to look them up ahead of time
1:15
and have some information about them, you have a leg up in establishing some level of
1:21
rapport or some commonalities there. Generally, the most powerful aspect is to look to try to identify some shared experience
1:30
right? Because that goes a long way in demonstrating so much about your commonalities of personality
1:36
interest, values, beliefs, etc. So you can, again, put yourself in the good graces of that individual
1:44
And again, it makes them more likely to want to help you. It establishes an ambiance, a reciprocating relationship
1:54
Okay? So again your ability to do that also projects confidence again in professionalism that you can go beyond just the formalities of answering their questions that you can be conversive And again it certainly passes that elevator test
2:15
Okay? All right. Now, practicing for the interview. You're going to focus on your skills, right
2:23
You're going to focus on how you translate those skills in a conversational manner
2:28
manner and transmit them or describe them to your interviewer without seeming overly
2:37
braggish or anything like that. You're going to have to tell your story, your past, where you intend to go and in that story
2:47
work those skills in there so again, they recognize you as a value proposition
2:53
Perhaps most importantly, don't memorize your answers. Have points you want to talk about
2:58
You have practiced your delivery of the stories, your personal experiences, your skills, etc
3:06
all in a story. So you can simply deliver it as such but to memorize or practice your answers seem rehearsed and it comes across poorly actually if it goes too far
3:22
And then before you go in there to interview, practice with someone else
3:27
Ask a friend, preferably someone who's had some experience interviewing people before
3:33
You can even do the work to supply them with questions or things like that they can choose
3:37
from to ask you. But do a mock interview. Now if you're coming from an academic institution that has a career development center, they
3:45
may be able to offer you programs where you can practice this
3:49
Where you can work with alumni or other students or officials in the school organization that
3:55
they can help you in doing these practice interviews. If not, again, try to set it up yourself
4:02
And the more you practice, the more confident you're going to be. You're going to project that confidence and it's going to make you more appealing during
4:09
the interview process
