Oh, this is not what it looks like. My name is Tova Courage and this is how to live on zero waste
0:16
Can you live on zero waste? What does it mean and how do you do it? So now we'll pull over the term
0:23
zero waste but what does it really mean? Well, this is what I'll be attempting today
0:28
having breakfast, lunch and dinner completely on zero waste. Wish me luck
0:35
So now the idea of zero waste implies I can't waste anything right? So do I have to eat the
0:41
peel of my oranges and avocados? Well no, unless you want to of course. Now you can break zero
0:47
waste down to three categories, compostable, recyclable and reusable. If it falls into any
0:54
of those three it classes as zero waste so let's start with my morning coffee if I want to have a
1:01
coffee on zero waste how do I go about it because apparently 16 billion paper cups are used for
1:07
coffee every single year which leads to 6.5 million trees cut down now I've got tons of cups in the
1:14
house which are reusable so let's see if it works four billion gallons of water going to waste and
1:22
enough energy to power 54,000 homes for a year also goes to waste. This is the
1:28
significance of what that little one decision that's the ripple effect it does for the whole earth, for the whole planet
1:44
I don't look like a crazy person at all. Okay, so that was easy enough. Coffee with zero waste
1:53
Breakfast. Now this is where it starts to get tricky. I'd like to make myself porridge for
2:07
breakfast but I don't know where to get porridge without the plastic packaging research. I just
2:13
found somewhere. It says shop without packaging. Pretty straightforward. Let's go! Now it says bring your own container, weigh it, fill it, pay for the contents only. Now
2:34
that kind of implies that it's going to be cheaper but I doubt that because these
2:39
shops are usually more expensive so I don't know let's find out
2:48
so does that mean the product is cheaper if I don't have to pay for the packaging
2:54
sometimes it can be like a lot of time with the laundry liquids to detergents
2:59
oh yeah liquid it's all right okay yeah flower flower okay amazing thank you so much
3:09
Here are the oats. For organic deluxe muesli, you get 50p per 100 gram. For organic muesli
3:22
base 25p per 100 gram For organic rolled oat flakes 22p So we gonna go for the 22p yes please
3:35
Does the weight matter? Yes. Oh yeah. So this container would be 650 grams so if you wouldn't weigh it
3:43
I mean we could decant it and weigh it again. Yeah. But other than that you would have to pay for the weight
3:47
Alright so we've weighed the jaw and now when I put the oats in it, we can minus the
3:56
weight of the jaw from how much I need to pay. So it's 22p per 100 gram
4:01
I think the jaw weighed about 20 something gram. So I've got like 80 gram left
4:08
Can we weigh this to find out how much? Yeah sure. 95 pence
4:19
95 pence, okay. Nice one, thank you. I'm just going to grab some milk as well
4:44
Thank you so much
4:56
Thank you. Alright, and there we have it
5:07
Oats and milk for £1.96. cost £1.01 and this £0.95 which isn't so bad I guess. At least I'm saving the
5:19
planet so I have a reason to pay the extra pounds. Now I'd like a banana with my oats and I think I know what to do with the peel
5:41
So now I've seen some videos online where people take the peels of bananas, they slice it up, put it in a jar, put some water in it, and then leave it to decompose over a few days and simply just use it to feed their plants. Win-win
5:58
Next up peanut butter or almond butter. Now it does come in a jar which can be reusable
6:06
either as a jar or as a new age stylish quirky urban cup
6:16
Now I usually decorate my oats with a lot more like blueberries and chia seeds and
6:22
other random bits but I don't know where to find blueberries that don't come in packaging
6:26
in the supermarkets it comes in packaging in the market it also comes in packaging so
6:33
yeah this is our breakfast no animals died in the creation of this breakfast
6:41
and no waste was made in the creation of this breakfast happy days win-win
6:46
tick tick check check yes get in let's eat Lunch Now for lunch I thinking pasta and veggies So we gonna head to the shop and see what we can get I know I can get veggies without plastic packaging but pasta on the other hand I
7:11
have no idea where you can get that. Probably at the shop without the packaging but I don't fancy
7:19
going all the way back there. Now luckily for me I already have pasta in reusable
7:24
packaging so we don't have to go through the whole process of going to the shop
7:31
to get the pasta. All I need to focus on are veggies without packaging and then
7:37
put this lunch together. Let's go! Thank you
8:46
Now this is going to be interesting with our cauliflower and this zero waste challenge means
8:55
we have to eat all these leaves that one would otherwise rip off and throw in the bin
9:05
So we're going to be roasting as well along with our cauliflower
9:16
For our sauce, we'll swap in the tin for the fresh tomatoes
9:32
Ok now with these tomatoes, I actually wanted to find out whether single tomatoes are cheaper
9:38
than the ones that come in a plastic bag. Turned out to be cheaper
9:42
So honestly, I don't understand why people don't just go for these. I also have oil in reusable packaging
9:54
Packaging or jar. These are obviously compostable. But we're going to see if we can make use of them anyways
10:06
Seasoning. Seasoning is a bit of a grey area. because can you get seasoning without packaging
10:16
Probably yes at the shop that has goods without packaging but we're not going all the way back there
10:25
so we going to have to make do either eat it without seasoning or figure out a way to reuse the seasoning package if that makes sense
10:43
Alright so the current waste we have at the moment are onion skins and avocado peel
10:50
now i've seen videos online of people using onion skins in broth using it as skincare treatment
11:00
using it as hair treatment i think they just boil it and then they use the water of the onions
11:06
to treat their air or treat their skin um alternatively it is biodegradable so it counts
11:13
as zero waste, kind of somewhat. And there you have it, lunch slash dinner on zero waste
11:29
This is our cabbage, this is our cauliflower skin. It's delicious. It's delicious. It's
11:43
hmmm This is the stem of our broccoli
11:56
If anything, that actually tastes better than the broccoli itself Avocado peel
12:01
I've also seen people using this as skincare treatment So others blend it up and then use it as hair dye
12:12
and other healthcare treatments. So there are so many uses of these things that we just get rid of
12:20
and make waste of. And there you have it. It's been an interesting day finding out about zero waste
12:27
and if it's even possible, what it's all about, how we can all apply it to our lives and how we
12:33
can take that extra step in the direction of saving the planet, right? And substituting maybe
12:39
some of the products we use, some of the ingredients, some of the places that we source our food
12:45
So like going to the shop without packaging, how amazing. I've definitely learned a lot from this
12:51
challenge. I hope to keep some of these things I've learned and apply it in my everyday life
13:00
I hope you guys have taken something from this as well and we're going to make this a series
13:05
So this is the first one living on zero waste food. I like to do living on zero waste
13:11
kitchen utensils or kitchen items something like This About tons of this all the time and this is all plastic. So how can I substitute this for something more
13:25
Sustainable eco-friendly etc. So we're gonna go over that in the kitchen episode and then we'll have a
13:32
a bathroom episode and then we can have a home living episode so yeah i'm really excited to like
13:40
