Uh Michigan State went on a couple big
0:02
runs. There was the one in the first
0:03
half. You guys were upset when they
0:04
stormed back. Uh you guys had cut it to
0:06
three in the second and they kind of
0:08
extended the lead. I guess what do you
0:09
feel like maybe was missing from you
0:11
guys in those moments when they kind of
0:14
scor? Yeah, you know, um, one of the
0:16
things that, you know, we've talked
0:18
about is, you know, when we get to that
0:20
level that we're playing at on both ends
0:22
of the floor to be able to sustain it
0:24
and, um, in order to win and, you know,
0:27
games like that, you have to do that for
0:28
long periods of time. You don't have to
0:30
be perfect, but have longer periods of
0:32
time. And so just the little discipline
0:35
and details, you know, um you know, they
0:37
got 46 points in the paint, you know, um
0:40
defending, defending without fouling,
0:43
even though I think they only went to
0:44
the free throw line maybe six or seven
0:47
times. Um
0:51
loose balls, offensive rebounds, they
0:53
got 12. And then on the offensive end,
0:55
just being able to execute. You know, I
0:57
feel like we had some open shots uh from
1:00
the perimeter and um we didn't shoot the
1:03
ball very well, but um you know, after
1:07
the game, I told the guys, "This is an
1:09
opportunity for us to learn and to grow,
1:10
and that's what we'll do."
1:13
Coach said that you guys uh took it
1:15
right to them with the physicality and
1:17
everything early on, but he thought he
1:19
got the sense that maybe you guys were
1:20
down a little bit over the course of the
1:22
game. Do you think you guys were down
1:23
and do you think that was maybe
1:25
coincided with some of those runs?
1:28
Maybe. I you know um we knew that it was
1:32
going to be a physical game and I do I
1:35
felt like you know we met that challenge
1:37
at the beginning of the game. It just
1:39
goes back to being able to sustain it
1:41
and that's something that this group has
1:42
to do. you know, you can get to that
1:44
level of physicality and execution, but
1:47
um you have to be able to sustain it and
1:49
be consistent for long periods of time,
1:51
and it just wasn't um where it needed to
1:54
be to win a game like this.
1:55
Brian, then Matt,
1:57
uh Huer, five bench points. I know
2:00
obviously the depths have has been hurt
2:02
with the Seth injury, but what maybe are
2:04
you not seeing out of kind of those
2:05
bench pieces or the depth uh in games
2:07
like this?
2:07
Well, I wouldn't specifically um single
2:10
out the pitch. Um, North Carolina's
2:13
North Carolina. We're all a team and,
2:15
you know, in order for us, um, to have
2:18
won tonight, we needed to play better on
2:20
both ends of the floor. I talked about
2:21
the points in the paint going into the
2:23
game. I think we were fifth in the
2:25
country in field goal percentage
2:26
defense. They shot 51%. That's just not
2:29
going to work. And so, and then our
2:32
struggles being able to shoot the ball
2:34
um, from the perimeter. And so there's a
2:36
number of things that we've got to get
2:37
better at, clean up, and continue to
2:40
become more consistent. And that comes
2:42
from everybody on the team.
2:44
Matt, here.
2:45
Caleb, you were the only player for
2:46
Carolina to score over the last 8
2:48
minutes, 45 seconds of the game. What do
2:51
you think wasn't clicking offensively?
2:54
And what do you think Michigan State was
2:55
doing to kind of disrupt
2:57
just
2:59
uh I'm not sure. Um, I feel like, you
3:02
know, Michigan State was just playing a
3:06
hard-headed defense. I just feel like we
3:07
just got to be more aggressive and, you
3:09
know, provide more opportunities for
3:11
everyone. And, uh, I just feel like, you
3:14
know, defensively, I feel like I had
3:16
lapses defensively in the second half
3:18
that I have to clean up. And I feel like
3:21
most of the points that they got, we
3:23
were we were given to them. So, it's
3:25
just us playing defense and trusting our
3:28
principles.
3:29
Coach Fierce uh got real comfortable in
3:32
the second half there. Just what makes
3:34
him so difficult to guard and especially
3:35
down the stretch the way he put a stamp
3:38
on the game like you did?
3:39
Yeah, you know, he controls the game. He
3:41
was uh um you know, he's big, strong, um
3:45
plays under control and he gets into the
3:47
lane in close spaces. He has the ability
3:50
to be able to still make plays, plays
3:52
off two feet, doesn't panic. um he can
3:56
score, he can distribute, and um I felt
3:59
like, you know, his presence out there
4:00
on the floor on both ends of the floor
4:02
really really settled them and um he
4:06
played a really good game tonight. I was
4:07
very impressed.
4:08
All right, Alden, Shelby,
4:10
Kale, you scored 10 of the first 14
4:12
points for 20 minutes you didn't score.
4:14
What did they do differently against
4:16
you? I know they gave you more
4:18
attention. And do you feel like maybe
4:20
you were trying to force some shots too
4:22
much now and then?
4:23
I know. I just have to learn how to play
4:25
with, you know, the focus. Uh I
4:29
I mean, in high school, I had to deal
4:30
with it. In college, it's different cuz
4:32
it's more athleticism, better players.
4:34
And just got to learn how to play play
4:35
with players, focusing on me, being the
4:38
top of the count report. That's all it
4:40
is. And uh they just started face
4:43
guarding me, trying to be physical off
4:44
the ball. That's all they tried to do.
4:47
Call it the fist 45 just face guard me,
4:50
trying to press me off, have the ball.
4:53
Shelby I guess um just on that note for
4:56
Luba obviously just a really intense
4:58
physical game. What were the challenges
5:01
just for you that Michigan State posed?
5:05
I think this is the this is the first
5:07
time that you play against the team who
5:09
is really physical. They play 40 minutes
5:11
physical game. We saw there were not too
5:14
too many too much points for both teams.
5:17
Um I mean they play like us. They like
5:21
transition game. They like to push the
5:22
ball. They're physical. They can switch
5:26
also. So I think that uh we should be
5:31
happy that we give 100% of effort
5:33
tonight. But we also should see that
5:36
with 100% of effort. It's not enough
5:38
against these kind of teams. We also
5:41
should be more focused also cut this uh
5:44
gray zone minutes. not uh be relaxed in
5:48
I think two or three times we went
5:52
relaxed couple minutes and against this
5:54
kind of teams we can't do this it's not
5:56
possible so for me it's good that it
6:00
happen in just early games like this so
6:02
we we have to learn because uh like uh
6:05
more we we play we play against better
6:08
teams and we can't sleep for a couple
6:11
minutes of the games
6:12
then Jeremiah
6:13
Hbert what do you get out of this game.
6:16
What did you learn from your team? What
6:18
do you take from it that you're
6:19
concerned about maybe a couple things
6:21
maybe you feel a little good about?
6:25
Well, I mean, I think that's a good
6:26
question. I mean, the game just ended. I
6:28
mean, obviously, you know, after a game
6:30
I don't say very much to him. Um, I want
6:32
to watch the game over again. Um,
6:36
you know, I I would say initially,
6:40
you know, just from a defensive
6:42
standpoint, like,
6:44
you know, being able to play at that
6:46
high level and being able to sustain it,
6:48
you know, as I said before, going into
6:50
the game, you know, uh, percentage-wise,
6:54
defensively, you know, we were top 10
6:56
and we allowed them to shoot 51% from
6:58
the field. That just can't happen. Um,
7:00
46
7:02
46 points in the paint. that just
7:04
doesn't work. Um
7:07
um I thought we were good offensively
7:08
when we changed sides of the floor, got
7:11
the defense moving, and um but I'm
7:15
looking forward to looking at the game
7:16
again and just being able to break it
7:18
down and and be able to to really see
7:21
some things that um that I think we can
7:24
improve on, which I believe so. And then
7:27
some things that I thought we did well
7:29
and to encourage them from that
7:31
standpoint as well. Last two, Jeremiah
7:32
and Brian.
7:33
Yeah, Luca. Um, 423 for you guys from
7:36
the from the three-point line. Do you
7:38
think there was anything in particular
7:39
Michigan State was doing, I guess, to,
7:41
you know, maybe limit the good looks or
7:42
did you like the looks you were getting?
7:44
Was it just a matter of, I guess, not
7:45
knocking them down?
7:47
I mean, like it was just um we we
7:50
doesn't shut good the ball tonight for
7:52
three points and uh also when you open
7:57
should you should make it. It's simple.
8:01
If you make it, it just easier to play.
8:03
If you make two or three, just give more
8:05
confidence for other players and just
8:08
push us to catch if we if we went like
8:12
um if they they have some advance
8:14
against us. As I said, like it was
8:17
really tough game and uh we just have to
8:20
learn from this.
8:21
Last one. Brian,
8:22
uh Caleb, you were talking about kind of
8:24
46 points in the paint, 51% fielder.
8:27
What did you see kind of on the
8:28
defensive defensive end from your point
8:30
of view kind of in the interior?
8:32
Uh it was just a physical game and
8:36
just got to learn from it, learn what
8:38
the other team was doing to get the
8:41
points they got and kind of apply to
8:43
myself. Uh I feel like you always learn
8:45
from your opponent win or lose and they
8:48
play physical basketball. They were
8:50
holding, hooking, grabbing. So that's I
8:53
just I just learn from it and be able to
8:55
apply it to my own game and know how to
8:57
combat it myself.
8:59
Thank you everybody. Appreciate it.
9:00
Thank you.
