Practice football. Football season.
0:02
Good to always good to get started. Um,
0:05
you know, I think
0:07
uh um
0:08
you know, we had a few players join us
0:09
in June,
0:11
um, but most of our team was here all
0:13
spring. So, we just had a handful of
0:15
guys. So, it's good to have all those
0:16
guys back. It's a lot different than the
0:18
situation we were in last year. Um, so
0:20
we've been able to
0:21
move ahead. Uh, we've had a good month
0:23
of training
0:25
uh in in June and July month and a half.
0:27
Um but training's training and
0:29
football's football. So, football
0:31
conditioning's a little bit different
0:32
from from just, you know, training
0:34
conditioning. So, um,
0:36
and we're excited to get started. We got
0:37
some acclimation days uh ahead of us
0:39
here in the beginning.
0:41
And so, you know, we won't be getting
0:43
into, let's say, real
0:45
you know, a real football competitive
0:47
situations here for a few days until we
0:48
get past the acclimation period, you
0:50
know, like everybody else has to do, but
0:52
um
0:52
uh we're underway and this is where we
0:54
build our fundamentals and we build our
0:55
communication um
0:57
and, you know, get a good foundation so
0:59
that when we are ready to to move
1:01
forward
1:02
uh into more contact practices and
1:03
situational plays and things like that
1:06
uh that we're we have a good base to
1:07
build on on those. So, um
1:10
and I'm excited to get started. Uh, we
1:12
have some players that uh didn't
1:13
participate in the spring that um
1:16
are going to be full participants in the
1:18
fall. We have some other guys who are
1:19
still coming along. They're making good
1:21
progress uh but are day-to-day and we're
1:23
just going to monitor their their
1:25
progress as they go, but um they're
1:27
already been trending in in the right
1:29
direction. They're just their various
1:30
timetables uh depending on
1:33
uh
1:34
you know, how quickly they're able to
1:35
ramp up to full speed and those again
1:37
take that day-to-day. It's um we're not
1:39
going to get full evaluation over today,
1:40
of course, cuz we're not in full pads,
1:42
but eventually we'll we'll get that. So,
1:45
um again, the big thing here for the
1:47
players now is to is to be able to work
1:49
on their fundamentals and their
1:52
uh assignments on a very basic level so
1:54
we have a good foundation, we have good
1:55
pillars to build on, and then, you know,
1:57
as we get into week two and week three
1:59
of uh training camp, then we'll really
2:01
be able to ramp up the competition and
2:03
ramp up the
2:05
expansion of our scheme in all three
2:08
phases.
2:09
And, you know, finalize some of our
2:11
evaluations so that we're you know,
2:13
ready to put
2:14
you know, the guys who have earned roles
2:17
into those positions as we get ready for
2:18
the opener. So,
2:20
Again, always good to get going and a
2:23
long way to go, one step at a time, one
2:25
day at a time, really. That's our focus.
2:26
It's not
2:27
I'm not really worried about what we're
2:28
doing two weeks from now.
2:31
We'll take it day by day. I'm sure we'll
2:32
have to make some adjustments along the
2:34
way when we're moving a little faster or
2:35
a little slower than anticipated in
2:37
certain areas, but that's the way it
2:39
always is in camp. So,
2:41
we're we're ready to go, ready to
2:42
adjust.
2:45
Okay.
2:46
>> We'll take a question if anyone wants to
2:47
get us started. We'll start on the left
2:48
here, coach.
2:49
>> Uh it's not often that you guys play the
2:51
same team this many times in a row.
2:54
How are you guys going to
2:57
>> Well, they have
2:59
obviously they have different players.
3:00
They have a a different offensive system
3:03
in place, so
3:04
but we'll get to TCU when we get to TCU.
3:06
Right now, really, most important thing
3:08
for us
3:09
is the building blocks of our
3:10
foundation.
3:12
Our fundamentals, our you know, basic
3:14
plays, our adjustments that'll come off
3:16
of those. Like, those are what we need
3:18
to get down and you know, whether they
3:19
come up in the opener or come up in the
3:21
second game, we know that they're going
3:22
to be important at the course of the
3:23
year. And it's important that we have
3:25
those to build off of. So, until that's
3:27
done,
3:29
you know, it's it's hard for us to
3:30
expand our scheme. And
3:33
whoever we play, whichever opponent it
3:34
is, we'll look at that opponent each
3:36
week and
3:38
figure out what we think is the best way
3:39
to approach
3:41
that team competitively and and
3:43
hopefully, and we expect to have a good
3:45
base and a good building blocks to be
3:47
able to be able to maneuver
3:49
to where we feel like it's it's our best
3:50
competitive edge, and
3:53
and those game time preparations.
3:55
But if you don't have a good base, then
3:56
when you try to go somewhere that, you
3:58
know, you want to go, it crumbles
4:00
because you don't have a good base to
4:01
build on. So,
4:02
that's right now that's where we are.
4:04
We're in the We're in the very much in
4:05
the building foundation [clears throat]
4:06
phase.
4:07
>> All right, coach.
4:09
So, would you say that you're
4:11
deeper and have more ready options on
4:13
the offensive line than this time last
4:15
year?
4:16
And specifically,
4:17
what do you
4:18
>> I want to talk about
4:20
both those.
4:21
But, yeah, absolutely. Last year, half
4:23
our offensive line
4:25
wasn't even here. We didn't see them
4:27
until June. So,
4:29
we had one, two, three starters
4:32
that that weren't even on campus until
4:33
June. So,
4:35
yeah, we're way further ahead than we
4:37
are.
4:38
Now again, those guys were senior type
4:40
players, you know, Lindberg and and you
4:43
know, guys like that that they came in
4:45
here.
4:46
And so, some of our players are less
4:49
experienced, but they've been here,
4:50
they've been in our system, and
4:51
certainly we can move forward quicker
4:53
with them than we did last year. Last
4:55
year we were in evaluation stage. So, we
4:57
were just trying to figure out who was
4:59
going to play where. We had to make some
5:00
adjustments in terms of position on our
5:02
offensive line. Not saying there won't
5:04
be some of that this year, but I think
5:05
it'll be a lot less of it.
5:07
>> Yes. And specifically, Aiden Field got
5:09
hurt
5:10
last year in the season.
5:11
Jordan Hall
5:13
came in and played well after that.
5:14
Where are they at? How much What do you
5:16
think about where they are right now?
5:18
They have much they can
5:19
>> Yes.
5:20
Both those guys have worked really hard.
5:22
I think they're both ready to go.
5:23
Excited to see them out there.
5:26
You know, I think both both
5:28
are ready to compete and you know, ready
5:30
to have a good season. So, I'm excited
5:32
to see both of them.
5:34
And losing Aiden in the What was second
5:36
or third game?
5:37
What You know, he didn't play much in
5:39
that game. Syracuse game, but
5:41
yeah, losing him obviously was, you
5:44
know, didn't help us, but and you know,
5:45
Chris Owens, the boat, you know, he
5:48
honestly missed a whole season. So, to
5:50
have Christo and Aiden back, even though
5:53
they didn't play they didn't play very
5:55
much last year, it's good to have them
5:56
back and their voices back. Jordan, as
5:58
you said, came on at the end of the
6:00
season
6:01
and, you know, played well and and has
6:03
played well in the spring as well, so
6:05
um you know, definitely excited to see
6:06
how they'll play this year.
6:08
>> Right here coach Brennan.
6:09
Uh you mentioned you can't comment on
6:11
Mike's situation. What is his
6:12
responsibility
6:13
>> That's right.
6:13
>> What is his responsibility behind the
6:15
scenes? Is it delegated which staff is
6:17
to step up and how do you address the
6:18
chain of command of the coaching staff?
6:20
>> Um yeah, well, we're working through
6:22
some things, you know, we're at a
6:23
particular time of year now where there
6:25
are certain things that are in play and
6:27
certain things that aren't in play that
6:28
won't happen until later in the calendar
6:30
year or some other point, so
6:32
um yeah, we're taking it day to day and
6:33
and um
6:35
you know, working through the things
6:36
that are on the table now.
6:38
>> Right here coach Brennan.
6:39
>> Bill, follow up on that a little bit.
6:41
You've talked about
6:42
Mike White's importance to this program
6:44
and how much he's helped you since
6:46
you've been here. Without him here, who
6:48
do you see for how long? Does it change
6:50
the things that you have to handle on a
6:51
game day?
6:53
>> We've made a few adjustments, yeah, but
6:55
I mean, we're, you know, we're working
6:56
through the process.
6:58
>> Right here on the right here.
7:00
>> I'm done actually.
7:01
>> All right, I've got another question.
7:02
>> All right.
7:03
Okay.
7:04
>> Perfect.
7:07
>> Um wanted to ask about Mason Humphreys
7:09
specifically, um how do you see his game
7:12
sort of complementing guys like Jordan
7:14
Ship, um guys like Trajan Bandy.
7:16
How do you see his size sort of opening
7:18
up things for for some of the others in
7:19
this defense?
7:21
>> Yeah, I mean, he's he's got good size,
7:23
good speed, he's, you know, been a
7:24
productive player um and came in and
7:26
showed that in the spring. Um certainly
7:28
has, you know, earned an opportunity for
7:31
um some playtime here. Um so there's
7:32
Trajan, of course Jordan's already here,
7:34
you know, he's pretty well established.
7:36
So, we'll see how all that comes
7:37
together. We have some other, you know,
7:39
other guys Um, like LeCounte who was
7:41
here last year, guys like that
7:43
you know, we're also going to be
7:44
competitive and we have, you know, seven
7:46
freshmen and and you know, they
7:48
are making good strides, of course,
7:50
because they're furthest behind, but
7:52
they're they're moving along. We'll see
7:53
how quickly they move here in in August
7:56
and in their practice season
7:58
to compete for playing time. So, it's a
7:59
very competitive position, but uh,
8:02
definitely excited to continue to work
8:03
with Mason, um, as well as Trax and the
8:05
two two new receivers, um,
8:08
from the portal that, you know, I think
8:10
are going to
8:11
give us good competition, hopefully good
8:13
production.
8:14
>> Who are the tight ends?
8:16
>> Phil, the position you guys might not
8:17
have had as much production in one
8:18
season as the tight end spot. You guys
8:20
bring in a couple of new, you know,
8:22
fresh faces from Texas, and Ohio State,
8:24
and even Jackson and Iowa State.
8:26
Um, how excited are you for that
8:28
position here this year and kind of what
8:29
have you seen from them throughout the
8:30
spring and the summer?
8:32
>> Yeah, I mean, that room's been a total
8:33
makeover. You you hit the nail right
8:35
there on the head. Um, it's it's a lot
8:37
of new players, a lot of talented
8:39
players. Um, these guys have really
8:41
worked hard. Excited to see this group
8:43
come together and um,
8:45
you know, we had more production from
8:46
those guys in the spring than, you know,
8:48
we had the entire year last year. So,
8:51
um, you're right, the production from
8:52
that position was very limited and um,
8:55
you know, with with the players there,
8:57
uh, it's a position that Coach Patrino
8:58
and I both
9:01
um,
9:02
crave.
9:03
Um, like the, you know, like to see
9:05
that, you know, I've always had, um,
9:07
good tight ends, whether you drafted
9:09
them or I drafted them in the first or
9:11
second round,
9:12
uh, or whether I paid a lot of money for
9:14
them in free agency, like, you know, Al
9:15
Hilaire,
9:16
Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, guys like
9:18
that. It's a very important position for
9:20
our offense. We weren't able to to
9:21
really get much production there last
9:23
year and, you know, I hope that that'll
9:24
balance us out more this year, um, but
9:26
certainly those guys are off to a good
9:28
start. Um, Coach Pickeral, uh, Caleb's
9:30
done a really good job with that group
9:32
and um,
9:33
and I'm definitely excited to see them,
9:35
um,
9:36
you know, keep keep going this fall, you
9:38
know.
9:39
>> Right next to you
9:41
>> All right. I know you mentioned you guys
9:42
have a certain way you guys do things
9:44
and you take it day by day, but just
9:45
broadly, how much different do you feel
9:47
about the team and the program going
9:49
into this fall camp compared
9:51
Yeah, well, I mean, we're way ahead of
9:52
where we were last year. Again, just the
9:53
fact that nearly everybody was here
9:56
um
9:57
this year through the spring, through
9:58
the summer, you know, we're not starting
10:00
from scratch. We're getting better
10:01
evaluation of players
10:03
and they're further ahead.
10:04
I think I mentioned
10:06
this before, but you know, we didn't
10:08
have PRP practices last summer. We
10:10
couldn't run player run practices. We
10:12
didn't have anybody that knew what to
10:14
do. Um,
10:15
you know, this year that was completely
10:17
different story and the players did a
10:18
great job from what I understand when
10:19
I'm out there, but they talk about how
10:23
how good they were, how competitive they
10:24
were, what they were running, how they
10:27
um, you know, sometimes they had
10:28
questions of like, "Hey, this happened,
10:29
what should we have done here?" And
10:31
"Hey, this happened, what should we have
10:32
checked there?" That type of thing. So,
10:34
you know, I know that they're engaged. I
10:35
know they understand what they're doing.
10:37
We were in close to that last year. Um,
10:40
particularly at the quarterback
10:41
position, but it was the same thing on
10:42
defense. Our linebackers were new.
10:45
Um,
10:46
you know, the graveyards coming in new
10:47
at safety. It's We just had a lot of
10:48
transition, especially in the um called
10:51
signal caller type positions. So,
10:54
yeah, we're but it's it's much
10:56
different. And but the PRPs are they're
10:58
not only good for the playing and the
10:59
football part of it, but it's good for
11:01
team building, good for communication,
11:03
good for getting to know your teammates,
11:04
you know, besides just you know, running
11:05
sprints with them.
11:07
>> Uh front row on the right here.
11:08
>> Uh Bill, you mentioned the linebackers.
11:10
Obviously, you lost both Simpson and
11:12
Housear last season. Who Who did you see
11:14
>> They got two.
11:15
>> Yeah. Who did you see step up?
11:17
>> so yeah, not to interrupt you, but um
11:19
yeah, but let me interrupt you.
11:21
So,
11:22
yeah, I think we had like 4% play time
11:25
returning
11:26
at that position. I mean, literally
11:29
almost none. So, yeah, it's been a total
11:32
It's been a total makeover.
11:33
Go ahead.
11:34
>> Yeah, I got you. I was just going to ask
11:35
who did you see sort of step up in the
11:37
spring and put himself in
11:38
>> Yeah.
11:39
Um I mean it it was really good. We had
11:42
several players who were here like Jake
11:44
Bauer, like Tamir, like Jonathan,
11:47
and they gave us good leadership and and
11:49
were really, you know, but then we had
11:51
the new players that came in.
11:53
You know, like like McDonald, like
11:55
Seelmann,
11:57
you know, and then you know, we have
11:58
some of our freshmen like Evan Joyner
12:01
and BQ. So, it was you know, it's really
12:03
been a good group from top to bottom. We
12:05
have some veteran players
12:07
Evan Joyner is a fifth-year senior.
12:10
Seelmann you know, played a lot of
12:12
football at Richmond.
12:14
And then we have again some young guys
12:15
like Bauer,
12:17
Evan Joyner, guys like that, BQ that
12:19
have played, you know, almost no college
12:21
football, but they're good players.
12:23
And then you know, we have the guys from
12:24
last year that giving us you know, some
12:26
really really good leadership. Jonathan
12:28
has been really good job of stepping up
12:29
and
12:30
Um you know, again when you're in the
12:32
center of the defense that gives you the
12:34
format to
12:35
communicate with the defensive line,
12:37
communicate with the DBs, the safeties
12:39
and all that. So, you know, that's
12:40
that's been good. Tamir is the same
12:42
thing. It's good to have those guys back
12:43
and and have that
12:45
you know,
12:46
a good base to build from there.
12:48
>> Right behind you David.
12:49
>> Yeah.
12:50
>> What
12:50
>> [clears throat]
12:50
>> are your thoughts on Um
12:51
last year's record being what it was,
12:53
obviously turnover a lot of the roster
12:55
multiple times at this point.
12:58
Public more off-field stuff than what it
13:00
like situations with Lombardi. I don't
13:02
know if you can confirm or deny but
13:03
there are reports out there about the
13:04
CSC investigating. Just curious as you
13:07
kind of look back on this
13:08
year and a half now, has it been a more
13:10
complicated build than you expected and
13:13
how would you describe the current state
13:15
of the program?
13:18
>> Uh we made a lot of progress and we
13:19
continue to do that. Let's keep you
13:21
know, stacking days in front of each
13:22
other. You know, the guys that are here,
13:25
you know, have worked really hard and
13:26
seen a ton of improvement from them with
13:28
the developmental program. We have a lot
13:30
of young players, we've seen them
13:31
develop, we'll see where they go.
13:33
Um, but they're, you know, they've made
13:34
a lot of progress and the younger
13:36
players that are here, you know, guys
13:37
like,
13:38
um, you know, Leroy is an example or,
13:40
you know, Jordan Shipley has only played
13:42
one year of college football. You know,
13:43
he paired his latest freshman year. You
13:45
know, guys like that, um, you see them
13:47
making making big strides as well. So,
13:49
um,
13:50
you know, we've had good recruiting
13:51
class.
13:53
Uh, we'll see how the commits actually
13:54
end up falling and then, you know, for
13:55
the '27 group that we've already had a
13:57
lot of good commits there. It's,
13:59
uh, whatever it is, you know, it's
14:00
ranked, you know, fairly high and we're
14:02
not done yet. So, we'll see how all that
14:04
goes, but, you know, if you keep
14:05
bringing in good players and the players
14:07
keep improving,
14:08
program set in in in a positive
14:10
direction, we'll continue to get better
14:12
and that's that's our goal every day.
14:15
And that's my goal to be too, like I
14:16
need to continue to do a better job so
14:18
that each of our players, our assistant
14:19
coaches and all the support people, you
14:21
know, we evaluate what we do, uh, see
14:23
how we can do better and then you know,
14:25
attack it.
14:26
>> Back left.
14:27
>> Hey, coach, I just wanted to say how
14:29
much I appreciate what you're doing so
14:30
far.
14:30
Just sort of a follow-up to that
14:32
question. Uh,
14:33
college football, we know it's changed
14:35
in two teams
14:36
and all that.
14:37
When you come into it, how how much did
14:39
you have to adjust
14:41
in this new era? How much has been in
14:43
the social
14:44
media? How much has been in this team's
14:45
culture in recent years or how much of
14:47
it has been in the culture here at
14:47
Carolina and how much of it has been in
14:48
the culture here at Carolina? [snorts]
14:50
But this one is much different than the
14:51
last one that we
14:52
did.
14:53
You can put this in the past.
14:56
>> Um,
14:57
Yeah, look, there's certainly some
14:58
differences, you know, I think, you
15:00
know, one of the big things is just some
15:01
working with a lot of new people, you
15:02
know, and so getting to know,
15:04
uh, the people here at Carolina and, you
15:05
know, getting familiar with what
15:07
everybody does, how they can help us
15:09
and, you know, we've gotten great
15:10
support from, uh,
15:12
you know, Chancellor Roberts, um, Steve
15:14
has come in, he's been, you know, new
15:15
to,
15:16
um, and so forth. So, we, you know,
15:18
we've all started working together and,
15:19
you you that just gets better every
15:21
single day.
15:22
Um, so, you know, that that's been good.
15:24
Yeah, there's definitely a learning
15:25
curve anytime you go to a new job.
15:27
Sure you've done it before. You go to a
15:29
new job, you meet new people, you work
15:31
with different people, and you
15:32
understand how to use their strengths,
15:33
and and how to, you know, get your staff
15:36
functioning at, you know, maximum
15:37
capacity. So, um that's just a normal
15:40
process. That's the way it was for me in
15:42
Cleveland. Uh
15:44
in my stints as a head coach at the
15:45
Jets, which were very brief, but that
15:47
was part of it, too, you know.
15:49
Obviously, you know, it was New England.
15:51
Uh but yeah, you you know, that's part
15:53
of it when you come into a new program,
15:54
you know, you you make some
15:57
you set things up, and then you modify
15:59
and adjust them as you go based on the
16:01
changing circumstances, or maybe uh you
16:03
know, knowledge that
16:05
you didn't have initially when you set
16:07
those up, or maybe your options change
16:09
in year two from year one based on
16:10
availability of personnel, or
16:12
in this case, um certainly the rules
16:15
have changed significantly from, you
16:17
know, a two-portal system to a
16:19
one-portal system. Looks like the
16:21
eligibility rules are going to change. I
16:23
mean, there've been a number of
16:24
significant changes. I don't care what
16:25
program you're at. You could be, you
16:27
know, Kirk Ferentz at Iowa for as long
16:29
as he's been there, he still has to deal
16:31
with all those changes, too. So, it
16:34
doesn't really matter what your what
16:36
school you're at, you know, when the
16:37
rules change for college football, they
16:39
change for everybody. So, you know,
16:42
again,
16:43
it's part of a normal process, I would
16:45
say. You know, you just figure it out
16:46
and try to, you know, make the
16:48
adjustments that you feel are best, and
16:50
if you can see into the future, you do,
16:52
but you know, it's it's hard right now
16:54
to know exactly what
16:56
what Congress is going to pass or not
16:58
pass, how that's going to go. So, you
17:00
know, we're kind of more of a wait and
17:01
see. Let's see what we have to work
17:03
with, and then we'll figure it out from
17:04
there.
17:05
Things that look like there's more
17:06
certainty toward, like the eligibility
17:09
rule, for example, then
17:10
you know, we can start to
17:12
guys that we didn't think we were going
17:13
to have next year, now we'll have
17:15
another year of eligibility. You know,
17:16
whether they decide to stay or not, and
17:17
that's all another story, but at least
17:19
there's an option there that wasn't
17:21
there with certain players from last
17:22
year based on those rules. So,
17:32
Yeah, there are many moments, yeah. I
17:34
mean, there's many moments, sure. Yeah.
17:36
The Again, one of the biggest
17:38
differences between
17:40
the NFL and college football is the vast
17:43
amount of improvement that these players
17:45
make.
17:45
They come in at 17, 18 years old. Um in
17:49
a lot of cases, they haven't really
17:51
played very often, if at all, against
17:54
players of comparable skill.
17:56
Maybe in a camp or something like that,
17:59
but on a down-after-down basis, where
18:02
they're lining up across from somebody
18:03
who's who's a power four player, or
18:06
multiple players like that, you just
18:08
don't see that very much in high school
18:10
football. Like, teams that have that
18:12
kind of, you know, with rare exceptions,
18:15
you know, teams that have eight, nine,
18:16
10 power four players, when practice
18:18
they go against each other and so forth.
18:20
But that's more the exception than the
18:22
norm. So,
18:23
you know, these kids get here and they
18:25
have a ton of growth, both physically
18:27
and from a competitive standpoint, you
18:29
know, they're just not better than
18:30
everybody anymore. They've got to
18:31
improve their skills, improve their
18:33
strength, their conditioning. And you
18:35
know, what Moses has done in in a weight
18:37
in a weight room and in a conditioning
18:38
program, you know, the speeds guys go,
18:41
you know, three, four tenths of a second
18:43
faster in a 40 in a year. I mean, you've
18:46
never seen that in the NFL. You never
18:47
see a guy go from 4.9 to 4.5. I mean,
18:50
they're just You just wouldn't see that.
18:52
Um you might see him go from 4.65 to
18:54
4.58, or, you know, something like that,
18:58
but not you wouldn't see a guy go from,
19:00
you know, 450-lb squats to 630-lb squats
19:04
in a year. I mean, you wouldn't see
19:06
that. So,
19:08
the physical growth, as well as the
19:09
techniques and fundamentals, of how to
19:11
run routes, learning how to pass
19:12
protect, learning how to how to tackle,
19:15
learning how to play with leverage on
19:16
the line of scrimmage, tackling people.
19:17
I mean, all those things like the amount
19:19
of improvement that these guys have made
19:21
is is enormous. I mean, you look at a
19:23
player like Melber, and he's a walk-on
19:24
at Delaware.
19:26
Led the ACC in sacks last year. So, you
19:28
know, and that's a credit to him through
19:30
his hard work and and his
19:32
competitiveness and all that. But,
19:34
he I mean, he got a lot better in in a
19:37
you know, in a total calendar year, even
19:38
a little less than a calendar year.
19:40
Well, it was a calendar year, January to
19:41
January. So,
19:42
you know, you just don't see that kind
19:44
of improvement in the NFL as frequently
19:47
as you do here. There's a few guys that,
19:48
you know,
19:50
Brady goes from a
19:52
fourth-string quarterback to a Super
19:53
Bowl MVP in a year. I mean, there's not
19:55
many of those. There's really aren't
19:57
many of those, and he was a rare, rare
20:00
um exception to that.
20:02
But, for the most part, you see guys
20:04
improve, but like Edelman, you know, it
20:07
took a few years, you know, he really
20:09
didn't become a productive receiver
20:10
until, you know, his fifth year in the
20:11
league. And that's I would say more the
20:14
norm, second, the third, the fourth, the
20:16
fifth year.
20:17
Whereas, these guys improve much quicker
20:20
than that if they put in the work and,
20:22
you know, are diligent in their their
20:24
preparation.
20:25
>> We got time for four more, Brad.
20:27
Billy you told us in Peyton.
20:29
You told us in Charlotte that there was
20:31
no bigger in the clubhouse as far as
20:33
quarterback battle. What does the
20:34
timeline look like on that, and how do
20:36
you how do you go about the evaluation
20:38
process there?
20:39
>> Yeah, no no set timeline. Um we'll just,
20:42
you know, I think once once it becomes
20:44
apparent and clear, then that's when we
20:46
make a decision.
20:49
>> All right. As that continues, um what is
20:51
something that sticks out to you about
20:52
each guy? Um what's the biggest thing
20:54
you're looking for in that evaluation
20:55
process there?
20:59
>> Well, the players' deposition come from
21:00
very different backgrounds. Um you know,
21:03
Billy Edwards has played a lot of
21:04
football um
21:06
and and had a lot of
21:08
or had a lot of sorry production in the
21:10
big 10 in in 2014 season at Maryland.
21:14
Played a lot of football at Wisconsin
21:15
but then got injured and really didn't
21:17
play during the season. So and from
21:19
experience standpoint he has more
21:20
experience than all the other
21:21
quarterbacks put together times five,
21:24
you know, so it is what it is.
21:27
Miles is a very talented player, one of
21:29
the best athletes on the team. He's big,
21:31
he's fast, he's strong. I mean honestly
21:35
he could you know play tight end,
21:36
probably could play linebacker or
21:38
safety, you know, if that was his
21:39
position. You look at him and say yeah,
21:41
he'd probably do those things, all
21:43
right, but he's a quarterback. So
21:45
very talented player there. You know,
21:47
Tory is improving in his second year and
21:49
Travis has been able to keep doing more
21:52
and more through the spring, through the
21:53
summer
21:54
to where he's ready to go now. So you
21:56
know, I'm excited to see him play. So
21:58
they all kind of have a little different
22:01
you know,
22:03
wouldn't say necessarily strengths or
22:04
weaknesses but they just come from
22:05
different places and want to see how it
22:07
all comes together. But one thing we do
22:10
know is that next year you know,
22:12
Billy won't be available, right, but he
22:14
has the most experience again by far of
22:17
of any of the other ones or all of them
22:19
combined if you actually want to go that
22:20
way. So
22:22
you know, what's best for the team we'll
22:24
we'll see how that plays out. But I
22:25
think they all have a lot to offer.
22:28
>> So do I.
22:29
>> You had a couple of four-win seasons in
22:32
a row with a break in between.
22:35
That had to be a really disorienting
22:36
experience for you after winning so much
22:38
over so many years. How did you deal
22:40
with that
22:41
I guess emotionally? I mean was that was
22:42
that difficult for you?
22:45
>> Yeah, I mean look, I've taken the same
22:47
approach ever since I've been a coach.
22:48
Do the best you can every week, do the
22:49
best you can every year. At the end of
22:51
the year you look back and you see what
22:52
you could do better, look at it
22:55
you didn't win a game or you won the
22:56
last game in the Super Bowl, it's still
22:58
you re-evaluate what happened and you
23:00
out how to do a better job the year.
23:02
There's always room for improvement.
23:04
There's always things that you did well
23:05
that [clears throat] you want to build
23:06
on.
23:07
And there's always things that you would
23:08
like to do better and you figure out how
23:11
to you know, how to how to address
23:12
those.
23:13
So,
23:14
that's what I've always done week to
23:16
week, year to year. I'm sure it's not
23:18
your problem. I'm sure everybody else
23:20
does that in their job, too. That's just
23:21
a normal process.
23:23
>> We'll finish up right here real real
23:24
quick.
23:25
I think it was cleared up when you said
23:26
that. I don't know if that was
23:28
fully addressed. What can you tell us
23:31
moving forward into the college football
23:33
championship? Allegedly there's a big
23:35
football game.
23:36
>> Yeah, next question. Brandon, I mean we
23:39
can't talk about that.
23:39
>> Yeah.
23:40
Thanks, guys.
23:41
>> All right. Thank you.
