Capital.com. Um, after uh the Cal
0:03
Friday, do you guys feel like you have a
0:06
good foundation to build on like good
0:09
things that you did that you can sort of
0:11
keep some positive momentum going in
0:14
Virginia this weekend?
0:15
Yeah, absolutely. I think our offensive
0:17
line we've been building every single
0:18
week. Um, we saw a lot of good explosive
0:21
rushes, fuels us, fires us up. Um, I
0:26
think we have a a lot of good things
0:27
going and we're trying to build on it
0:29
this week. We've strung a lot of good
0:30
practices together and just keep going
0:32
with it.
0:33
Do did Gio seem he said after the Cal
0:36
game that he was the healthiest he's
0:37
been. Did he seem just that he had more
0:40
pepp?
0:41
I mean, he always comes out and
0:43
competes. He's always been really good.
0:44
He fires us up. Um, I mean healthier. I
0:49
don't necessarily know, but he was
0:51
played a good game and and was out there
0:53
just like he he always is to us.
0:56
Tom
0:57
Tommy Ashley in South Carolina.
0:59
Obviously playing center is new for you,
1:01
but you've had Austin Blaski, y'all got
1:03
a history there. How's he sort of helped
1:05
you and how you kind of like at this
1:07
point really seamlessly worked into a
1:10
center?
1:10
Yeah, I mean between him and Christo
1:13
have a ton of center experience uh
1:14
between the two of them. It's something
1:16
that in all my years of college football
1:18
when I'm in meetings I try to learn the
1:20
center position because if you can learn
1:21
center then you know all five. Um so
1:24
I've been trying to know the assignments
1:26
and and the mic points and all that
1:28
there. So it was kind of an easier
1:29
transition but then blasting Christo
1:31
they have so much experience told me all
1:33
the techniques I need to know the little
1:34
tips and tricks. Um I'll do something
1:36
wrong and then like first person that
1:38
comes up to me is Christo telling me you
1:40
know like this has always worked for me
1:42
in the past. I'll go do it. It's
1:43
perfect.
1:44
How was the the communication side of it
1:47
being there for you?
1:48
Um, it was a bit of a learning curve at
1:52
at the very first because, you know, I'm
1:53
used to just go up there and you listen
1:55
and you don't have to do anything. Maybe
1:57
make a call with the guy next to you and
1:58
go play. Um, it took me a little while
2:02
to process, you know, get up there, see
2:04
it, talk, get down. Then you still have
2:06
to snap the ball in, do what you got to
2:08
do. So, um, practice just smoothed that
2:12
out and made it much faster. Great.
2:15
Uh, hey Jack, great sash to Hills on
2:18
this eye. Um, just talk to me how, uh,
2:20
your your recruitment process came out
2:22
with North Carolina. Who contacted you?
2:24
What do you like about Chill so far?
2:26
Yeah. Uh, we lost our head coach at
2:29
Rice. Um,
2:31
Scott Ael from Davidson came in. Uh,
2:34
didn't necessar necessarily want to run
2:36
the triple option. uh decided it was
2:38
best to hop in the portal. Um I looked
2:40
between University of Houston and here
2:41
obviously I had Blaski here. Um someone
2:44
that could tell me kind of the ins and
2:45
outs of the program, not necessarily the
2:47
new coaching staff, but you know,
2:48
telling me a lot of good things about
2:49
Chapel Hill, have you know, um great
2:53
college town, great place to be, good
2:55
weather, all that. And just, you know,
2:57
Blaski was was big and and kind of
2:59
putting me over the edge that, you know,
3:01
I could come go far away from home
3:02
again. And uh really enjoy it out here.
3:05
may not follow up with that. I'll talk
3:07
about Austin. What's your relationship
3:08
been like with them? I know you guys
3:10
played at George and obviously that was
3:11
a huge part with your process coming
3:13
here.
3:14
Yeah. Uh we were freshman roommates
3:16
there. Uh so we lived together in the
3:18
dorms. Um I mean obviously played four
3:21
years together there. So uh really close
3:23
in all the meetings and all that. And
3:25
then we went our separate ways. Um
3:27
stayed in contact for the most part. You
3:29
know, how you doing? How's this going?
3:31
Um, I know when I played Charlotte uh at
3:34
Rice last year until Blast got hurt, I
3:36
was watching his film, so it was great
3:38
to text him and catch up like that and
3:39
just, you know, I mean, we've been
3:41
friends since since freshman year of
3:43
college.
3:45
Yeah. On the recruitment thing, I
3:46
wondered how much uh communication did
3:48
you have with Michael during that
3:50
process? What was that part of the
3:51
process?
3:52
Uh, I did find an agent in this in the
3:55
portal this uh second goound. Um, he did
3:58
most of it. Obviously on my visit I went
4:00
and talked to him and they gave me their
4:01
recruiting spiel and um I liked what I
4:04
heard and I felt like I could have a
4:05
good future here.
4:07
Um on on Benjamin Hall obviously a big
4:09
game you guys open lots of holes for
4:11
him. What was it like watching him run?
4:13
You know a lot of talk about just how
4:15
hard he was running and obviously his
4:16
building had
4:18
Yeah, he's a great player. Um
4:20
he was uh trusting us. Uh something that
4:24
you know we build in practice. We try
4:26
our best to to give him a great look to
4:27
see what the holes are going to look
4:28
like in a game and he trusted us and uh
4:31
hit him hard and it was good to see him
4:32
run. I love explosive rushes.
4:34
Adam
4:36
Chad Smith in South Carolina. Um you
4:39
talk about taking you some time to get
4:42
used to processing and getting down at
4:44
center and everything. I was wondering
4:45
if you had to do any extra work with the
4:47
snapping because we heard that was a bit
4:50
of an issue there in camp for you when
4:52
you got over there. Was was there
4:53
anything special you did to try to like
4:55
nail that down?
4:56
Yeah, I mean when I first was doing it,
4:58
my snaps are all over the place. It's
5:00
not easy to do. Um, you know, you only
5:02
throw the ball four yards, but it's
5:04
upside down in between your legs and you
5:05
got to block someone. Um, I work before
5:08
and after practice. I mean, I still do,
5:10
especially if I feel like my snaps are
5:11
bad at any particular practice. I'll
5:13
grab Gio Max or any one of the
5:15
quarterbacks and get a couple extra
5:16
after. Um, early on I did change my
5:19
technique from like a traditional to a
5:21
dead ball. Um, it's been a lot more
5:24
consistent. I'm still working on
5:25
velocity, getting it back there. Um, but
5:28
I'm just getting more used to it and,
5:30
uh, thankfully I would kind of went to
5:31
center at the beginning of camp. Um, and
5:35
had enough time to work on it.
5:37
Were you surprised at all that that was
5:39
like difficult? Yeah, I mean I don't
5:43
think I have the best arm on the team or
5:45
anything like that, but you know, I
5:46
would have thought that I could snap
5:47
pretty easily, but no, it is tough. Um,
5:50
but it's gotten a lot better for me.
5:52
No.
5:52
Hey, no talk 24/7. What's it like for an
5:56
offensive lineman to block for a
5:57
quarterback that can use his legs, turn
5:59
negative plays into a positive, stuff
6:01
like that? What's it like for you to
6:02
block for someone like that?
6:03
Yeah, it's good. I mean, it takes a lot
6:05
of the pressure off. um you know if you
6:08
unfortunately do have a bad block which
6:09
you know it happens uh you know that
6:12
there's an extra safety lever uh level
6:14
there that he could make someone miss or
6:16
um it just opens up a lot of
6:18
possibilities I mean somebody has to uh
6:21
cover the quarterback at that point too
6:23
especially on the the extended plays
6:25
that can turn into some of your best.
6:28
Hey Jen,
6:29
you just mentioned a second ago you
6:30
changed your technique snap. Can you
6:32
kind of elaborate on that? take us
6:34
through what some of those changes.
6:36
Yeah, I kind of I was holding it, you
6:37
know, like hold it back with the laces
6:38
and trying to throw it back there. Just
6:40
was inconsistent with it. So now I just
6:42
hold the tip of the ball. Um can kind of
6:44
really feel the whole uh football and it
6:47
just I feel like I have much more
6:48
control.
6:49
When did you make that change?
6:51
Sometime it can't. Not sure.
6:53
Noticeable difference like right away.
6:55
Yeah.
6:58
Yeah. I think hearing back um I saw
7:01
there was a bowling outing the team took
7:03
over by week and those are some
7:04
volunteer work over the weekend. Has
7:07
team bonding like that working new point
7:10
of emphasis since everything has come
7:12
out the last two weeks.
7:17
Yeah, I mean I feel like we're all
7:19
pretty close in the locker room. Um like
7:22
everybody's friends with everybody. We
7:24
all get along. Um, speaking from the
7:27
people that I deal with the most, the
7:28
offensive line, I think we're really
7:29
tight. Uh, we've gone to meals together.
7:32
Uh, and we all hang out outside of
7:35
football. I think everybody's pretty
7:37
good friends.
7:39
Jeremiah.
7:40
Yeah. Jeremiah all the way from South
7:42
Carolina. Chad, you was talking a little
7:43
bit about Benjamin Hall, the day that he
7:45
had the other day. It seemed as a unit
7:47
you guys, you know, in the in the run
7:49
block game did kind of create more holes
7:51
and things like that for him and for
7:53
Goss. What do you think worked for you
7:56
all, I guess, better than it did maybe
7:58
in previous games as far as, you know,
7:59
kind of helping the team have
8:00
established the run and creating?
8:03
I think we just strung together a couple
8:05
really good weeks of practice. um just
8:09
gotten used to each other uh up there
8:11
and uh just put it all together and
8:15
we're going to continue to build this
8:16
week and continue to uh you know play
8:19
our hardest this next uh Saturday
8:24
just as you guys
8:32
uh specifically as offensive line I
8:34
think we did a better job at finishing
8:36
our blocks
8:37
uh driving people downfield,
8:40
playing just a little bit harder, a
8:42
little bit more with an edge. Uh
8:45
I think we can continue to build on that
8:46
and play even harder in the in the
8:49
future.
8:50
And I know that obviously not really
8:52
pertaining to the offensive line, but
8:54
was talking about security just as a
8:58
whole. Um how you guys wanted to maybe
9:00
kind of lift up maybe that um you know
9:05
unfortunately
9:07
Yeah, during the game we were sitting
9:08
over on the little offensive line
9:10
section of the bench right after it
9:11
happened and uh Daniel King was like,
9:13
you know, let's go lift this guy up.
9:14
Let's, you know, tell him it's okay.
9:16
Tell them we got him. And we all walked
9:18
over there and uh you know, told him
9:19
that it's all good. Like it happens.
9:22
Obviously, we coach it and um we work on
9:25
it to to not have it cuz it's, you know,
9:27
ball security is job security. But, you
9:29
know, we try to uplift our guys.
9:32
Yeah. That was specifically.
9:34
Yeah.
9:36
Right.
9:36
Yeah. I wondered about Virginia if you
9:38
got a chance to look at them on film.
9:40
Coach Belch mentioned, you know, how
9:42
much pressure they get, particularly if
9:43
you're in third and long situations.
9:45
What have you seen out of Virginia and
9:46
what kind of challenges they
9:48
uh we took a look at them yesterday as
9:50
an offensive line. Uh they do have a a
9:52
good veteran uh group, which we have a
9:54
veteran offensive line, so it should be
9:55
a great matchup. Uh but they're active
9:58
up front, good ends, good D tackles, um
10:00
good pass rush group, good blitzes. Um
10:02
it'll be a good challenge. It'll be a
10:04
fun game. Anything
10:06
else for chat? Cool. Thanks so much.
