How does a desalination plant actually turn salty ocean water into clean drinking water?
In this video, we follow seawater through the entire desalination process — from ocean intake and pretreatment to high-pressure pumps, reverse osmosis membranes, and final post-treatment.
You’ll see how reverse osmosis separates water from dissolved salts, why the process creates both fresh water and concentrated brine, and what ultimately happens to all that salt.
We’ll also look at the massive Carlsbad Desalination Plant in California, where roughly 100 million gallons of seawater can enter the facility each day to produce about 50 million gallons of drinking water.
Desalination can provide enormous amounts of fresh water, but forcing seawater through reverse-osmosis membranes requires significant energy. That helps explain why having an ocean nearby doesn’t automatically mean having unlimited cheap drinking water.
