That voice is the voice of Dr. Akani Salco who is um a leading wellness
0:05
expert, founder and head wellness coach of the wellness lab. This is a pioneering organization dedicated to
0:10
helping women elevate their health and quality of life. So I do say I'm getting a lot of people DMing me, a lot of women
0:17
who are DMing me on Instagram, but I need you to call up right now. This man has some very important advice for you
0:25
uh around health and wellness. Uh I'mma open up the phone lines. If you are a woman, 8887423345.
0:33
It's a great time to ask questions. If you go to his office, it cost you. If you ask him here, it's free. All right,
0:40
Doc, how you doing, man? What's going on? I'm good. I'm good. How are y'all? We're great. Good to see you.
0:45
How's your family? We we doing well. It's crunch time. My wife is uh we're at the ending part of
0:52
this uh pregnancy. So, I think um next week we The baby coming. Next. The baby coming. may be coming. Uh what
0:58
what kind of provisions uh healthwise had has your wife had to adjust to being
1:06
pregnant especially in the in the third trimester? Yeah. So for her, our first two pregnancies um in the most recent one,
1:13
she was pretty clampic in the last one. Okay. So we really have to watch her blood pressure as we've been going through this and she's very surgical with
1:20
everything. She's doing the beet juice. She's trying to get her steps in. So, we really just had to be mindful of her movement and the foods that she's
1:26
consuming, especially as we get like towards the end. How does it affect her um her iron levels?
1:32
Yeah. So, funny enough, she takes a iron supplement every single day. She was trying to get me to take one. I'm like,
1:37
that's not something you just take just to be taken. So, she has to take an iron supplement every day and she really has
1:42
to make sure she's getting enough like leafy greens and lean protein to help supplement that. I ask you that because
1:48
as a man and I know a lot of men are in the room right now and um and I've
1:54
throughout my life have heard sisters, relatives, cousins, women I've you know
2:00
dated um iron has always been a challenge for women in particular
2:06
more so than men it seemed like. Yeah. Why is that? Part of it is, if you think about it, their menstrual cycle, every
2:13
month they're going through a period where they're bleeding and their iron levels are coming down. So, if they're
2:18
not mindful of increasing their leafy greens, increasing their whole grains, getting more protein, and a lot of women
2:24
typically consume less protein significantly more than men. So, those things can lead to iron
2:30
deficiency. Okay. All right. That's good information because I started hearing about that in
2:35
junior high. you know, I didn't understand what that meant and why it happened. People becoming anemic. I
2:41
didn't know what that meant, Tracy, you know, and it just and then it kind of kept, you know, made me a little
2:47
standoffish, too, when people talked about it. You you you prove my point all the time,
2:52
but we'll talk about another day. Thank you, sweetheart. You know, I didn't understand.
2:58
Now you don't. Now I know, right? Okay. So, Heather, you've been following him for quite some time.
3:03
I've been following Dr. Salco for quite some time and I call you the master of like women's health and hustle. That's
3:09
my my name for you because I I think you hit the mark when you look at women in
3:15
our schedules whether you're a working mom, a mom in general and just trying to
3:20
maintain a wife, family and work, all the things. And at the same time, we have to constantly worry about our
3:26
health and sometimes we don't always make the right choices. And for me, I just thought this was a beautiful
3:31
opportunity for women in particular who listen to this show that are age 30 and over who are who are working, who are
3:38
hustling, who trying to maintain health. What What is realistic? I I said before
3:43
um the year was out, I'm I'm joining your program the first day that you come back here. So, I'm officially joining
3:49
today, Citizens. Wait, wait, what? What's the program? What are you joining? Well, he has to, from what I understand,
3:55
by following Dr. Salco. He designs a program for you. Um he he consults with
4:00
you. Um and finds the thing that will work specifically for you. Not every
4:06
body type. And I think this is something that's not discussed a lot because we watch so much television that we just
4:11
feel like join this program today and lose 18 pounds in 40 days. And then you
4:17
join the program, you're like, well, what happened? You know, everybody's different. You know, um we don't all eat
4:23
the same things. We don't all like the same things, but what I do notice with you that you do consistently, and I
4:28
bought it here today because I wanted to have you explain this. So, this is a mixture of spring water, um, lemon
4:37
juice, and sea salt. Yeah. Now, for someone who's constantly watching my blood pressure, as you mentioned with
4:44
blood pressure, um I don't understand why sea salt is necessary in this, and I
4:49
I want to give you the opportunity to explain why this is something that we should have first thing in the morning
4:54
because I did cut out the coffee. I love it. I love it. So, one of the biggest things I always say is have your
5:00
water and hydrate before you have any type of coffee in the morning because if we're looking at your cortisol levels,
5:05
your cortisol levels are typically higher in the morning. And cortisol is your stress hormone. But it's natural
5:11
for your cortisol levels to be high in the morning because it helps you wake up. Now, if we are consistently having
5:16
coffee, what does coffee do? It's a stimulant. It's going to increase your cortisol levels. So, this is why you have people later in the day, they're
5:22
wired, but they're tired. Like, they want to get to bed, but they can't because they've had their higher cortisol levels throughout the day. Now,
5:28
in relation to the drink specifically, why sea salt is in there? When I was in school, one of the things
5:34
our teachers told us was where sodium goes, water follows. The purpose of you having that is to help with digestion
5:40
and to help you hydrate in the morning. So for having a little bit of pink Himalayan sea salt or sea salt in
5:45
general in there, it adds the electrolytes to allow your body to hydrate a little better in the morning.
5:51
Oh wow, that's interesting. I was like, he trying to raise my blood pressure. The cortisone levels you said typically
5:58
spike in the morning. So your cortisol levels are typically higher in the morning, but that is natural because it helps us wake up.
6:04
Cortisol becomes an issue if you're you have a high stress job, but you do nothing to manage your cortisol levels. You do nothing to manage your stress,
6:10
you're undereating throughout the day, you don't exercise. Those are other things that can increase your cortisol
6:16
levels if you're not mindful. But having higher cortisol levels in the morning is perfectly normal.
6:21
Okay, Dr. Salco is here. Um, I want to go I'm open up the phone lines.
6:27
8887423345. With that said, is it better to take showers, a hot
6:34
shower at night? Yeah. Or in the morning, uh, in in relation to your cortisone levels?
6:40
Yeah. I would say it depends on the person because every what you do during the day
6:46
is dictating how your response is later in the evening. If during the day I've exercised, I've ate pretty consistent,
6:53
I'm good at night time, my cortisol, I'm regulated, I'm good. So whether I take a shower at night or in the morning, I'm
6:58
perfectly fine. Versus if I'm someone who I' I've had a day and I I feel
7:04
stressed, I feel anxious. Having a shower at night time would be great because it's going to help you unwind and kind of relax and reset before you
7:11
go to bed, helping you to reduce your levels. So it really depends on what happened prior to that moment that's
7:16
going to dictate the best thing course of action. Okay, we're going to go to the phone lines, right, Heather? We want
7:22
women who are 30 years of age. Do they have to be 30 or? Well, I I I've been following him and so
7:28
I I just kind of feel like the the market was women who just skewed to be like I didn't see a lot of 20 year olds
7:34
as well. I'm not excluding anybody. Okay. So, okay. Just women. Okay. Women is fine. Women is fine. Okay. So, women
7:41
if you have some direct questions, right? Absolutely. About balance between um
7:47
work and health. Um I He is the master of getting us balanced on that. All right. 8887423345.
7:55
What up, Nas? It's a beautiful song. One of the most beautiful songs I've A nice title. Bouquet. It's pretty.
8:01
Okay, man. That's beautiful. N you did that, brother. Who? Wait, who was that?
8:08
Wait, Nas, I can't hear you. Say it again. N. Yeah. Thanks for the shout out, Nas. We
8:15
appreciate it. And Premiere, that's dope. Okay. Okay. Okay. Dang, Heather, the women win.
8:23
All right, we got Dr. Aani Salakaco is here, a wellness expert, founder and head wellness coach at the at the
8:29
wellness lab. Heather be um is officially a client. A client
8:35
and what I wanted to do and I wanted to do it this way. Uh Dr. Salco and I spoke. I wanted this to be visual for
8:41
the citizens. I wanted them to actually be able to see the results. He will be here once a month for Women toWoman
8:47
Wednesday um helping us out and answering the questions. But I also wanted to show you guys that it works,
8:53
you know, and it's real and you can have real food and do the real work um and watch the results from it live on Sway
8:59
in the morning. Absolutely. Now, if you're not able to call in right now, he does have social.
9:04
Can you tell them your Instagram? Yes. So, my Instagram is dr.s
9:10
a ko. It's dr.s a ko. one more time, dr
9:17
and just DM me the word coach and we can start a conversation. There it is, coach. Um, and so women, if
9:23
you want to call up 888742 3345, Cat is on the line from Arizona. Cat, welcome.
9:29
What's up? Happy woman towoman Wednesday. Hey, thanks for taking my call. I um I
9:37
had a question. Um, so I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and a
9:43
fatty liver. I know that you're supposed to, well, I need to change my eating habits and start working out more, which
9:49
I have tried, but I'm more concerned about the liver and I'm wondering what I can do to help strengthen that and kind
9:55
of if I could reverse the fatty liver because I'm feeling it. I They have me
10:00
on like metformin to try to manage the diabetes and I don't think it's really working. I don't Yeah, it just makes I
10:06
feel really sluggish and just blah. So, I was looking for advice on that.
10:12
Yes. Yes. Yes. So, couple things that I want you to focus on. The first is going to be making sure you're getting more
10:18
fiber into your diet. And please know with type 2 diabetes is it it is reversible, but we have to aggressively
10:25
address your habits. So, take inventory on what are the types of carbs that you are consuming. If it's if we're starting
10:32
our day with high amounts of carbs, we need to implement more fiber and more protein into your diet. To address your fatty liver, watch the types of fats
10:39
that you're consuming. So, we want to start getting more of our omega-3 and our healthier fats. So, like your salmon, your avocado, your walnuts. All
10:46
of those things will address both. It will help with your energy levels. It'll help with the fatty liver, and it's also
10:52
going to help with the diabetes. Okay, cool. Yeah, that's all I was really concerned about because I've Have
10:59
you heard of that dose for your liver? I I don't know if that's even good, but I
11:04
was considering trying that, but I I don't know like milk thistle and
11:11
different things. It's like different uh supplements. I don't know if there's
11:16
really any supplements that will help. So before going into supplementation,
11:22
because sometimes supplements can counteract with the medication that you're taking. So any type of supplements that you're thinking of, I'd
11:28
first run it by your doctor just to make sure that it's not going to counteract because that's another problem that we
11:34
don't want to go into. Right. Right. Okay. Cool. Hey, Cat, are you on Instagram?
11:41
Yes, I am. Yes, I am. Please follow this man D R S
11:47
A L A K O and put coach. Yes. Um Okay.
11:52
On a message and you can have these conver you can have these conversations off air continuously with this man.
11:58
Yes. Absolutely. And to give you just some reassurance. One of our clients she c it's funny enough she
12:04
called in the last time we were here. In three months we were she was pre-diabetic when she started and in three months we were able to take her
12:10
from pre-diabetes to no longer being pre-diabetic. So, I want to give you some encouragement on the fact that it
12:15
is possible, but again, you have to be aggressive in making lifestyle changes. You got it, Cat. You already know it.
12:22
It's your year, Cat. Let's go. All right. Citizen in the morning. That's why he's here.
12:27
That's why he's here. Sher's on the line from Palm Springs. Hey, Sher. Hey, Sher. What up, Sher? Or is it Sher? Is it
12:34
Sheree or Sher? No. Shar like Singer, but no copyright.
12:39
So, okay.
12:45
First time torchy torch. Oh wow. Let's give it to her. What torch? Hold on.
12:55
I love that. Welcome to the wellness lab. All right. Go ahead. What you
13:01
Absolutely. So my question is um I'm 42 years old African-American
13:06
uh queen and um I am adopted. So, I don't know my family history. Um, I
13:14
recently spoke to my brother and he told me that he found out that our family has high blood pressure and I just wanted to
13:22
before, you know, I went to the doctor, no disrespect to doctors of not our color, but it's for me it's kind of hard
13:29
to go to a doctor and feel like they just want to get pills. Um, and I just
13:36
want to know what's a good recommendation to when I do go to the doctor, what's the questions I should be asking because they're not there's not a
13:43
lot of doctors um, of our color and our area. And um, I'm definitely going to
13:49
follow you. So, I did get your Instagram and so I just want to I just want to
13:54
make sure I mean if you can help me when I do go to the doctor of not my color. No disrespect. Like I said, what can I
14:02
be asking? Because I don't want to keep taking pills for the rest of my life. High blood pressure. Um because I know
14:07
it's a big thing in our uh community or in our culture.
14:13
Okay, perfect. So, first I want to clarify, do you currently have high blood pressure?
14:20
Yes. Okay. Only only reason why I know that really quick is when I I work in in the
14:27
healthcare field. So when we do our physical at our job or when I do go to the doctor, it's high, but I get a
14:33
little anxious and they say that's kind of normal, but is it really? So go
14:38
ahead. I'll answer it. Okay. So often times there's something called like white coat syndrome.
14:44
Syndrome. They told me I had that, but I didn't believe it. What is it? So white coat syndrome where when you go
14:49
to the doctor's office, you're really anxious and then your blood pressure rises. And then when they take your blood pressure, you have higher blood
14:55
pressure at the doctor's office versus when you have it at home. So what I would first I would recommend for you,
15:00
especially because you're in the healthcare field, take your blood pressure every single day before you go to the doctor. So do it for a week. That
15:06
way when you go to your doctor, you can show them, hey, I've taken my my blood pressure at this time after doing this
15:12
and this is what it's trending to be. That way they have some background information and we're not just using the numbers while you're with them. So that
15:19
will help in making determination of which route we want to go. The second thing we have to figure out your blood I
15:25
mean your um your history when it comes to your family but I'm a big a big advocate and just because it runs in the
15:31
family doesn't necessarily mean it has to run through you. So we have to look at your current habits. What are the
15:36
things that are leading to my blood pressure? Am I exercising? Am I eating healthy? Healthy in relative terms in
15:42
relation to the things that you like. So if we look at some of your lifestyle habits are those things leading to the
15:48
high blood pressure because there's plenty people who have high blood. I have high blood pressure that runs in my family, but my blood pressure is
15:53
perfectly normal. So, yours can be as well, but we just need to take a look at your lifestyle habits, too.
16:00
Okay, perfect. Thank you so much. Um, again, I will follow you and continue my journey with you. I'm excited. Uh, Sway,
16:07
I've been following you since MTV, so keep on going, brother. I'm excited.
16:13
Thank you. Shar. Yeah, she got a nice voice. Hey, Shar. You want me to do an MTV news
16:19
report for you? Do it. Do it way. Do it. Please. You want me to? You want me to do it?
16:24
Do it for everybody, man. Do it for everybody. Go ahead. Go. What was my thing? What was my thing?
16:30
What up, world? It's sweat. Okay. Okay. Here we go. Here we go.
16:36
What's up, world? This is Sway with your MTV news. You play too much.
16:44
Okay. So, listen. Thank you. I might have to come back to the news cycle, man. I I feel like we
16:50
going to have to do something something. There's a lot of work and beyond. There's a lot of work that could be
16:55
done. All right. And Mike, I heard you say I was rusty. I didn't appreciate that. Okay.
17:00
I didn't say that at all, man. I didn't say that at all, man. That was Harlem. I was excited for that. That was
17:08
Hey, I want the I want the best for my brother, man. Oh, man. That's all right, Shar. Thank
17:15
you. You're a beautiful voice. You have a beautiful voice and I can tell you're a beautiful spirit. You're a super citizen.
17:20
That's way in the morning. Dr. Salco, I have a question because I know a lot of women will be calling in
17:25
about blood pressure. It's an issue that we all um have dealt with or deal with and I've been diagnosed with white coat
17:31
syndrome as well. I didn't know what that was until uh Sway and I had to go to the dentist and they would not
17:37
even um operate on me because she was like, "If this is your real blood pressure every day, you'd be dead." But
17:43
I was just so nervous and anxious. um before that, but I also realized that
17:49
you spoke about seasonings one time when you and I were having a private conversation. And what is it about
17:54
seasonings that people have such a hard hard time reading? Um I think when they see sodium 125 milligrams, they think
18:03
that's for the whole jar, but they don't realize that when you see 125 milligrams
18:08
of sodium, that's usually for a quarter of a teaspoon. Yes. It's not for the entire. So when you're
18:14
using Whatever your favorite uh sodium thing is, that's
18:20
125 probably times 50. Oh, so it's per teaspoon. I know. Quarter teaspoon. It's never by
18:27
Oh my gosh. 1/4 of sodium 125 milligrams for 1/4 of a teaspoon.
18:34
They're killing us. Yeah. We killing oursel because we're not reading them correctly. And I think that's something else we should start
18:39
doing in terms of health decisions, the labels. Yes. Looking at your nutrition labels is one thing that can save you from a lot
18:46
of problems later down the line. If we look at something as simple as oodles and noodles, everybody grew up eating
18:52
noodles. And if we look at it, that one thing is actually two servings. So if you look at the sodium packet, it says
18:59
typically it's anywhere from 500 to a,000, but that's supposed to be two servings. So you're having that and if
19:06
you double it, that one thing of oodles and noodles is roughly 1500 to 2,000 milligs of sodium. So looking at our
19:12
nutrition labels, like we have to start looking at our nutrition labels, especially if I'm someone who has high
19:18
blood pressure. I'm not eating nothing without looking at the nutrition label. Getting when I first start out, cuz our
19:23
seasonings, it's per serving. If you cook anything like me, I'm not sitting here measuring out a little
19:29
teaspoon. I'm just dumping until I feel like it's the right it's going to taste exactly. So we really need to pay
19:34
attention with that. And other things like if you like lunch meat, lunch meat is typically higher in sodium. So you
19:40
got to get low sodium alternatives. Sodium is in a lot of things. We just don't realize it. So we need to start
19:45
looking at our nutrition labels. Baloney and stuff like that. That's packaged baloney, lunchables,
19:50
your even your fresh lunch meat that you go to the deli and you want to get honey roasted turkey. It's typically has a
19:57
decent amount of sodium. So if you're going to get one, go for the low sodium honey roasted turkey if you have blood
20:03
pressure related issues. All right. And so all those boxed cupped noodles
20:09
are just high sodium disasters. So basically what he's saying, a regular
20:14
turkey and cheese sandwich. So there's cheese in there sodium in the cheese, sodium in the turkey, sodium in the
20:20
pickles, then you add salt and pepper and and then you got
20:27
probably Yeah. the sauces. Then you add about 1,500 grams of sodium, milligrams of
20:32
sodium, right? just in one sandwich at noon. Yeah. And they got the nerve to get Starbucks in the morning and all these other
20:39
sweets and other things that have sodium in it as well. And it just compounds on each other until you go to the doctor
20:44
and you're like, "Oh, but I've been watching my diet." Yes, you're watching the things that you're eating, but we're not necessarily looking at the little
20:51
details as well. Damn. Starbucks in the morning is not a good idea. Dr. Noodles was 10 for a dollar back in
20:57
college. We was living. Wait, hold on, Mike. Let Tracy go first and then you see me. Yeah. Yeah. I'm I'm
21:03
setting you up. Starbucks. My finger went up. Starbucks.
21:08
This is a studio full of Starbucks. Attack.
21:14
Dr. Clea. Actually, when we had our citizen share call up and she was mentioning pills. It reminded me that it
21:22
was announced this week that Wiggoi is now in pill form. A very popular GLP1 um
21:28
weight loss drug that initially was an injectable. And so now when it's a tablet, access of course is expanding,
21:35
but um public opinion is expanding with it. And so although these medications um
21:43
were initially prescribed by drugs, I think Wiggoi is now going to be um over the counter if I'm if I'm correct. But
21:49
either way, there is it was initially used to improve
21:55
people's health and still there is so much side eye around using them of folks
22:01
judging it as you not doing you trying to find a shortcut, right? You trying to
22:06
just get take the easy way into losing weight into shaping your health. In your
22:12
personal professional opinion, how does a woman know when this is a smart choice
22:18
versus not the right fit? I think the biggest thing is one looking
22:24
at before we get there, have you given it a fair chance? Have you tried exercising consistently? And when I mean
22:30
consistently, going to the gym for two weeks at a time and saying this thing isn't working is not consistency. I
22:36
mean, two to three months of showing up to the gym, being intentional with the foods that you're eating. If those
22:43
things are happening and we're still struggling, yes, it may be a good route to add that into it, but you still have
22:48
to go to the gym. You still have to be mindful with your food. I think that is the thing where people get on WGO or
22:54
these other medications and that is it. They don't do any exercise. They're not making any adjustments to their
22:59
identity. Unless you plan to be on it forever, you have to make changes to your lifestyle. Otherwise, the thing is
23:06
going to work and as soon as you get off, all of the weight, everything is coming back and the cycle will continue.
23:12
Wow, man. We got Dr. Aani Salco is here. You can follow him at dr.s
23:18
A KO. Get this advice. Okay. He flew into town for this. Lorna got getting
23:23
advice. She She calling from Nebraska. Oh, you could have pulled up. I'm in
23:28
Nebraska. You in Nebraska, right? So, okay, Lorna, there you go.
23:33
Yes. Welcome to the show. My question, thank you. My question is,
23:40
they tell me that my platelets are high and
23:46
what does that mean? Yeah. So, it means your body is
23:51
producing a lot of red blood cells and it also depending on how high it could be in relation to there could be any
23:58
type of infection as well. So, what I want you to do is the same exact thing
24:03
that you asked me. I want you to go back to your doctor. A lot of times our doctors will come back and give us all
24:08
of these lab values. They give us these numbers, but they don't explain. If you have a question, you pay in these
24:14
people. Annoy them. Do not let them out the room until you understand. Simply tell them, "Hey, I have this thing. I do
24:21
not understand what this means in relation to my health." Because they're going to know the full scope and the full picture of everything that is going
24:27
on. cuz in some cases you may have a high number but it's not nothing to be concerned about. So have the
24:33
conversation with your doctor, sit them down or message them or whatever and say, "I do not understand this. Can you
24:38
explain it to me?" And if they explain it to you and you still don't understand, tell them that, "Hey, I still do not understand. Can you explain
24:44
it to me?" If they do not want to explain it to you, get somebody else and say, "Can you have your nurse come in?" Or, "Can you have someone else explain
24:50
this to me? Or can you put it in my chart that I do not understand?" because they're going to come down later down the line to put you on medication, but
24:56
you cannot put me on something without explaining the why I need to take it in the first place. And what does um extra red blood cells,
25:05
abundance of extra red blood cells, how does that impact a person? Yeah. So, it depends on how each
25:11
person's body is regulating things. For some people, it can be perfectly fine. For others, it can lead to extra fatigue
25:17
because your body's having trouble navigating through. Your blood cells are having trouble navigating through. for some people can lead to high blood
25:24
pressure. So, it really just depends on each person. Okay, Lorna, I I I would suggest you
25:29
follow this man at Dr. D. S a L A K O Salo. Dr. Salaco and put in coach. Let
25:39
them know you you you heard him on our show. Yeah. And continue this conversation with them. All right. Cuz now you got a
25:45
backup to your doctor. Okay. All right. You a super citizen. This way in the morning. Uh Mike Muse
25:51
and Dr. Salco have a lot in common except Dr. Salco does not drink
25:58
Starbucks in the morning. I do not sometimes but it's not the
26:03
first thing I have in the morning. Yeah, man. Yeah. Well, first of all, I want to say I want to say what up new.
26:09
Uh what's up? How are you? And happy belated founders day. Happy belated found day to all the nukes.
26:14
Happy J5 everybody. I knew I liked you when I walked in when you walked into the room. I said that's a nuke right there. Um, we we see each I saw you
26:22
immediately. I was like, that's a man of achievement of excellence. I was like, a
26:28
wow. That's a member of Captain Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.
26:34
Doctor's over here. Tell me about it. Speak. Talk that talk. Oh, man. I'm so proud of you, man. I
26:41
love the advice that you're doing, man. You're really representing fraternity really, really well. Two things I want to say. One's a little fun comment, but
26:46
then one is actually a question. the fun comments about Starbucks. I actually like how you do talk about Starbucks. I'm a big proponent of Starbucks.
26:52
Everyone knows I have my iced coffee espresso right here. But I think what happens is people
26:58
I think people actually get those coffee beverages like when you drink them, you're drinking almost like a thousand
27:03
calories of like sugar and milk and caramel and swirls and whipped cream and
27:09
you're not even drinking coffee at that point. And so I was wondering if you could talk about
27:15
if you could talk about maybe having helping people to like reduce that so
27:20
then you can just I mean you have I drink black coffee right that may be strong for some people but I went through a process I used to drink tons
27:26
of coffee with sugar and milk and then I slowly started cutting it out. So maybe if you can talk about that how to make smart choices um at Starbucks and how
27:33
you can still enjoy coffee with zero calories and you can enjoy it like throughout the day. Then the second thing I want to ask you about is how can
27:40
you help people build community and to look at going to the gym as part of a lifestyle and a thing that you do not
27:47
just to lose weight. And the reason why I say that if if I'm allowed to kind of get into a little bit of a social
27:53
construct, I live in a certain neighborhood and it's really interesting that and Sway
27:58
you can I'm sure can attest to this too as well. Like on the weekends we're
28:03
everyone is in the athletic leisure, right? It's just like fitness is a part of just the weekend activity. is like
28:10
when I get up I wear athletic shorts, a hoodie and like but it's also too because the the neighborhood is wearing
28:16
like athletic shorts, athletic slacks, joggers, hoodies. Everyone's walking. I
28:22
see people walking in groups, you know, in neighborhoods. They have their coffee, but they're walking, they're
28:27
running, they're going to the gym, coming from the gym. It's such I find it from a social construct how it's such a
28:33
part of just the daily routine. How do we get there? I know that's a big question. Um, but how do we begin to
28:40
start having that conversation? I'll address the second question first.
28:45
So, I think your environment dictates a lot of our actions, especially when it comes to health.
28:52
Look at your people who I hear it all the time. My family's like this. I grew up like this. Just because we are around
28:57
it doesn't necessarily mean we have to I dive into the ideals and move the same
29:03
way. The same way we go on our phones and look up food near me or we look up what is the parties happening near me.
29:09
We can look up what is a run club that's happening near me. Silver sneakers at a lot of the YMCA's what are these
29:14
movement and these activities that are happening near me and get involved and get active in those type of communities
29:20
because being around it it's one thing to show up to a run club and you behind you the last person every single time.
29:26
After a while that grit is going to come out of you of okay let me start being intentional outside of just the run club
29:31
so I can improve my health. So, I think that's the first thing of immersing yourself into those environments to help
29:37
you want to make those changes. To your first question regarding the Starbucks, a lot of it whenever someone joins our
29:43
program, the first thing we do is a 7-day reset. Why we do the 7-day reset, I need you to get an understanding of
29:49
what the other side feels like. Cuz if you've been drinking coffee every single day, we drink a bunch of sugar every
29:54
single day. You don't know what not being on that feels like. Yeah. So, in the first seven days, we do a dramatic reset because I need you to
30:01
feel what it feels like to not have a bunch of sugar in your system every day to not start your day with coffee. Yes,
30:08
you may have some headaches. Yes, you may have a little bit of withdrawal. But by that eighth day, now you're able to
30:13
make a decision because you're clear. Do I want to continue having this bunch of coffee? I bet you after seven days where
30:19
you cut out your coffee, you cut out all the sugar, that eighth day, once you put it back in, you get to feel the difference now. And you can make that
30:26
decision of I don't like how I feel when I was drinking that way. Let me reduce or let me now start to go find
30:31
alternatives. It's hard to do that if you don't know what the other side feels like.
30:37
That's look at Mike's face. Yo, I mean got at you, huh? No, that No, that's it. No, he he
30:43
supported I but I used to be that. So that's why I drink the ice black coffee. I'm like I'm not going to keep drinking like 2,000 calories per day just giving
30:50
away to a beverage. I rather use that on good food. But that's how it used to be with Coke. N I used to have and Heather
30:57
Be knows this way. You know this too. I used to have a really bad sniffing booger sugar. Are we talking booger
31:04
sugar? Disco sugar. I used to have a really bad addiction to Diet Coke. And then so one day I Heather
31:11
B knows this. I used to drink Diet Coke all day. And something said I this can't be healthy. And I said I got to stop
31:16
this. And so I just started drinking like club sparkling water. But once I noticed that I when I go back to drink a
31:22
Coke now, it's so sweet. I am appalled by it. Like I almost spit it out immediately. I'm like, "How did I drink
31:28
this?" And it's to your point, once you remove it, then you go back and start drinking it, you're like, "How did I do
31:34
this?" Yeah. Yes. And for more clarity, doc, the coffee is more so not having it first thing in the
31:41
morning since it dehydrates you, right? Because I've seen studies that coffee beans contribute to human longevity.
31:48
M yeah. So coffee can number one, yes it can dehydrate you in the morning, but number two, if we look at simply your
31:53
gut health. Think about it. You have an empty stomach and the first thing that you pour in there is coffee. You don't got no water. You don't have nothing to
32:00
help with your gut lining. You don't have anything to support your microbiome in your gut. We just giving it coffee.
32:05
So, if we're looking at specifically someone that's trying to lose weight, the worst thing you can do is have coffee before giving yourself some
32:12
fiber, some probiotics, some prebiotics, something to help with digestion before we take the sugar bomb cuz most of us
32:18
are going to put the creamers and all of this stuff in there. Facts, right, man. Yo, this was great.
32:25
This is so good, man. Thank you guys for this is great. This is great. This is happening every
32:30
month. Who's our resident doctor now? Yes, every month. and um I've officially joined today. But thank you doc too for
32:36
your honesty. I think sometimes you don't want to deal with what it is, but to be real with you and the citizens, my
32:44
issue is time management. I don't have an issue with the food. I know what to cook. I know what to eat this morning.
32:50
It's always grilled turkey breast, egg whites, you know, spinach. I I yogurt,
32:56
blueberries. Like I can figure out the food. It's not putting in the time for the exercise. It's, you know, I have to
33:03
make the adjustment and the commitment to that to get myself regulated because it can get tricky. You know, people
33:08
don't know if it's the salt, if it's the sugar, you know, but, you know, if you get up and put that work in and have
33:13
that movement like you spoke about, you help to combat some of the things that could um lead to high blood pressure or
33:19
diabetes. I'm excited for you, Billy. Yeah, I'm happy too. You know, Trace, the whole sex level is about to go
33:25
crazy. I'm out here. Hey, horseally.
33:32
Part two comes like you talking about robots and and and smashing humanoids.
33:38
Humanoid just went left. Oh yeah. Sorry, Doc. You wasn't okay. Sorry. It's okay. I've heard it all.
33:44
Got a baby coming. That's mental health is a lot to do with this tool. This guy drives me crazy.
33:49
You think humanoid sex is that is out of the scope of my practice. Don't answer. Don't answer. N don't
33:57
answer. Don't answer. Since you're coming every month, Sway would do this to you. Just Just back
34:02
out. Yeah, just get ready. Just be ready for it. The more you talk to him, he he got jokes, bro.
34:07
Just look up at me and I'll give you a look. I'm like, don't do it, bro. Took a Tokook Mike a couple of years to
34:14
get it. Confused. I was answering everything. If I could say something in what you
34:20
said in relation to time, I tell every just give yourself a fighting chance when it comes to improving your health.
34:27
Whether that is 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there. Yes, you'll get a more benefit out of a let's say a cardio
34:34
workout by doing it for longer duration because in the beginning your body's attacking carbs. Over time, your body
34:40
starts to work on burning its internal fat. So yes, there are benefits to longer exercise. But I'd rather you do
34:46
five minutes than do nothing because over time it will compound. At the end of a week, if I can clock in 90 to 120
34:52
minutes of something, that's better than doing 2 minutes of nothing the entire week.
34:57
So, if we look longterm, it's doing more for you by doing it in short bouts versus doing absolutely nothing because
35:04
absolutely nothing is where we are right now. But doing a little more, your body's going to be okay. And then you'll
35:09
start to want it. It's part of it is just building the habit in the beginning. Want it. And just to clarify something we kicked off in the beginning before
35:15
you go. So if you are dealing with issues with high blood pressure, you should remove the sea salt or the pink
35:21
Himalayan salt from the warm water and the lemon. Just the warm water and the lemon is fine, but if you have blood
35:27
pressure issues, remove the salt um just to keep your blood pressure at a a
35:32
decent level. Correct. Yes. I would aggressively address your sodium intake um if you have high blood pressure. So I would omit that from the
35:39
beginning and I would aggressively address your sodium intake to help with your blood pressure. Yes. Okay. Thank you, Dr. Thank you, doctor. Dr.
35:45
Salco. Dr. Connie Salaco. Congratulations. Send my love to your wife. Send our love to your wife.
35:51
She was here last time. Tell him he said what's up and happy new year. Congratulations to you. You do an
35:56
excellent job for real. Uh great addition to the team. We appreciate you citizens. Follow him at
36:02
Dr. Salco. That's D R period S A L A K
