okay right now we we holding Court in
1:03
the white house right now because really
1:05
there's there's no platforms that could
1:07
really handle the gravitas of the game
1:10
that part we have here sitting down with
1:12
us today in the White House come on do
1:14
you ever think Hip-hop would take it
1:15
this far that part no man look at them
1:17
the legendary right there in the middle
1:19
right there he was the first to do it to
1:21
come out of the bag give it up for the
1:22
one only two shorts
1:25
next to me the legendary the business
1:28
mocha the Mogul the Jack of all trades
1:30
in my blood relative get up for you 40.
1:33
hey right here that's the future
1:35
happening right now it's only
1:37
appropriately in the white house because
1:38
we know he's headed towards politics
1:40
soon as he stumps 10 toes down
1:42
celebrating his birthday weekend real
1:44
soon the one and only Mr Fab
1:47
[Music]
1:48
this is a momentous occasion when I sit
1:51
here and look at these fellas these
1:53
gentlemen have to be we all grew up
1:55
together watch each other's careers
1:57
going different directions and we all
2:00
put our foot in this culture in our own
2:02
way really made our Mark and to arrive
2:04
here at the White House is extremely
2:07
surreal okay this is the first house of
2:09
this country built on the backs of our
2:12
ancestors this is where the first black
2:15
president ever resided and we are the
2:19
ambassadors of the Bay Area here to
2:21
salute the greatest NBA basketball team
2:24
of this era the Golden State Warriors
2:27
man I think that deserves a round of
2:29
applause
2:33
we agree on that right about that I
2:36
agree on the words all of us we all do
2:37
it's definitely Heather now okay Heather
2:40
you got to convert it's time
2:42
I remember one of the first times I ever
2:46
heard
2:47
um a rapper really referenced the White
2:49
House
2:51
um is when short says easy easy I'm not
2:53
going to say it but was it it was a song
2:56
pick up old dust bro yeah but no if you
2:59
said Ronald Reagan came up to me do you
3:01
have the answer yeah for the U.S economy
3:05
in the cure for cancer I'll stop it
3:08
right there yes
3:10
no I was I was very political at a young
3:14
age I'm the low man I would you know
3:16
just just kind of like uh
3:19
yeah it was it was a humorous way to
3:21
like take a little baby jab at the
3:23
system man you know
3:25
yeah I thought that was fascinating
3:26
right I was gonna say at that time
3:28
hip-hop artists weren't really that
3:30
political now it's commonplace to see so
3:33
many HIPAA buyers discussing politics
3:35
but when you did it it wasn't as common
3:37
in place at that time what made you feel
3:39
comfortable in doing it and saying it do
3:41
you remember what he said stop
3:45
stop man it was all you know it was
3:48
shock value and you know I I looked back
3:52
on the history of hip-hop and and what I
3:54
was doing as a rapper was not it was not
3:57
the status quo of let's see who could
3:59
rap the best I was literally just making
4:01
songs with a lot of bass a lot of
4:04
language and a lot of just shocking
4:06
things that make people you know give
4:07
you that feeling like oh oh that oh that
4:09
moment you know so uh I think it was
4:12
going over a lot of people's heads back
4:13
then but then when you like go do your
4:15
research you go wow this boy was saying
4:17
a lot of little stuff on the low so that
4:19
was one of them you you opened the door
4:21
in many ways I remember when um NWA was
4:25
um going at it
4:27
and Easy E got an invite to the White
4:29
House an armored Cube saying I'll never
4:32
sit down with the president I'll never
4:34
sit down like it was kind of uh to go
4:37
into the White House you would have got
4:38
backlash you know yeah now we here
4:41
celebrating 40. yeah we're here we're
4:43
here
4:44
um this honor and a pleasure I'm I'm
4:46
proud to be up in this thing man we
4:48
understand bro
4:51
uh what do you think about that Fab like
4:54
man I see you campaigning in the streets
4:56
of Oakland all the time you on the
4:58
highest platform as far as politics
5:01
going in the Free World right now you
5:03
you're in the white house
5:04
um to be able to sit on this platform
5:06
with people that I grew up idolized this
5:09
is a childhood dream I mean and I mean
5:12
Todd Earl
5:14
Sean we all each other on a first name
5:17
basis you know and you know I'm
5:21
I'm really walking in a dream right now
5:23
right like I'm really like waking up and
5:26
Heather the things that you've done
5:28
um to solidify
5:30
women in hip-hop you stand as we stand
5:33
on the precipice of changing the culture
5:36
this is the New Politics this is the new
5:37
leaders this is the new narratives and
5:39
we're creating these things by actually
5:42
unapologetically being ourselves so to
5:44
be here to be invited as who we are
5:48
um even in what we are it's amazing it's
5:50
a blessing and I'm uh I'm humble I was
5:53
curious if uh maybe Heather and you
5:54
maybe communicated prior to coming here
5:57
because your hat matches her shoes
6:00
wardrobe thing um
6:04
no I it's is it for me this is my first
6:07
time here and I was saying to sway and
6:09
Mike who they've been here several times
6:10
and I was like I woke up this morning
6:13
and like just talked to my parents above
6:17
in heaven and was like yo I'm going
6:19
y'all today like I'm going I know this
6:21
was a dream and wanted to call my
6:24
grandmother like that feeling that y'all
6:25
telling me is this your first time hand
6:27
did you tell anybody today that you were
6:29
coming
6:30
I told my mama she was like boy what
6:33
right I say yeah man and then she just
6:35
tried to call me and I just text her I
6:36
say I'm at the White House I can't talk
6:38
right now
6:41
that's the one
6:43
but yeah and wifey wanted to come but
6:46
you know we got limited um access yeah
6:49
yeah you know but wifey wanted to come
6:50
shout out to my wife Tracy yeah many
6:54
moons together since high school so I
6:56
wouldn't be here if it wasn't first we
6:58
have a secret agenda
7:00
got a secret agenda we're trying to give
7:02
Stanley here get us get us up
7:05
political weight up a little bit forward
7:08
here so he run for mayor in Oakland and
7:10
then eventually and then the governor
7:12
and then you hear he got the voice
7:14
together right
7:15
yeah he'll talk when you you kicked it
7:19
off with some of the words that you used
7:21
and I said oh that's where we are
7:23
linguistically today okay I'm gonna go
7:24
there and did you slide uh his
7:27
government name in a little while ago
7:28
yes he slid that real fast yeah we first
7:31
named each other all of us something
7:33
short knew my government name not that I
7:35
really did I was like I don't think
7:37
nobody knew thank you Stanley
7:40
my honor that just shows the
7:42
relationship proximity of who we are and
7:44
what we are you are my big brother
7:47
um is this your first time here too I
7:49
actually was invited I was here in July
7:51
for National leadership conference yeah
7:54
he flexed on us uh earlier today he
7:57
flexed on being too short earlier I've
7:58
been here before we couldn't believe him
8:00
at first James like you want me to show
8:01
you proof and I'm like okay class kept
8:04
every time he said he'd been here he'd
8:05
pick a different month it was October a
8:07
little while ago that was July
8:12
this is considered political rookie
8:14
hazing
8:16
I'm okay with it when I think about we
8:18
all knew it was great to say your names
8:20
you know on the list of being here and I
8:23
couldn't wait to interview you here and
8:25
it is something about actually the
8:26
visuals of seeing you here as our
8:28
audience is like listening I hope our
8:29
audience actually watched this on swage
8:31
Universe on the YouTube channel to see
8:33
the physical manifestation of Bay Area
8:35
hip-hop being in the white house and I
8:38
can't help but think about political
8:39
movements of the Bay Area like it's such
8:41
a political region in terms of activism
8:45
I'm thinking about the Black Panthers
8:46
right I'm sure you guys all stay on the
8:48
shoulders political movements and
8:49
activism so to see this here actually
8:51
just for me I'm kind of having a wow
8:53
moment right it's almost like a council
8:56
almost sitting up here and seeing this
8:58
so I'm just wondering as you reflect on
9:00
that like all the activism of the bay
9:02
and political movement are you guys
9:04
thinking about that as you walk the
9:05
halls of the White House today
9:07
or no doubt about it um uh I think that
9:12
um one of the best things about us being
9:13
here is not that we heard about it and
9:16
called and said can we go we were
9:18
actually invited
9:20
to come uh celebrate with the team and
9:23
I'm sure that my guys agree with me on
9:25
this that this is the moves that we make
9:27
in positions like this is to show the
9:30
youth this is possible you know what I'm
9:32
saying like you know they've invited us
9:35
in the White House you see you see Fabi
9:37
standing out on 19th and Broadway you
9:39
know I've been running through East
9:40
Oakland my whole life uh you know I'm
9:42
saying we bury a cash to the to the
9:45
fullest they know us and now look at us
9:47
man you can do it man we go along we go
9:49
a long way for you
9:50
you see Short Pop to his collar you saw
9:52
you with the popping I don't know if
9:54
anybody's ever really popped official
9:56
popped the collar in the white house
9:58
like that I just did okay you say you oh
10:02
you're fixing your jacket anybody at
10:05
that earlier but that's how we talk man
10:07
that's that that's like a hand gesture
10:09
it's like you just talk like that yeah
10:11
that's popping your collar man yeah yeah
10:13
when you look at the decorum in here
10:16
like and I know you you're a very
10:18
fashionable guy cuz oh and I know that's
10:21
the same way with your interior
10:22
decorating because whenever you post in
10:25
your house I look at the things in the
10:27
background like damn where'd he get that
10:29
from what do you think of this decorum
10:32
like this some of this stuff is Century
10:34
zeros years old I was looking for some
10:36
cobwebs I can't find none there's
10:38
nothing in here just cleaning and Clorox
10:40
up in this thing man you understand me
10:42
and they've been here forever and you
10:44
would think it had an old smell to it
10:45
you know how old building smell smells
10:47
good in here yeah they they really keep
10:49
up with the maintenance up in here in
10:51
this White House man you understand yeah
10:53
[Laughter]
10:55
you give it a thumbs up a thumbs up
10:57
brother
10:58
look got this Old Flag right here that's
11:00
like the
11:03
team is it I don't know
11:04
[Laughter]
11:06
1700 something there right it's way back
11:08
for show look at it 13. that's one of
11:11
those they went into 13 States before we
11:13
would became 13 colonies many moons ago
11:17
we hear that Mike news Town business we
11:19
breaking down the terminology I've seen
11:20
the civics lesson right before me it's
11:23
just a kind of environment you think
11:24
you'll be inspired like after this
11:26
you're out to three y'all might go make
11:27
a song we should well we do we just did
11:30
a song we just did something that's
11:32
crazy
11:33
this room is actually very reminiscent
11:34
of the Oakland mayor's office it is
11:37
uh I just received the key to the city a
11:40
couple weeks ago come on y'all whoa I
11:43
mean it definitely reminiscent of that
11:45
that's amazing
11:47
you know um
11:49
this is very inspiring I was downstairs
11:52
um
11:52
telling Pops I was like
11:55
they told me meet me at the White House
11:56
and I was there like he was like man we
11:58
should sample that this is like this is
12:01
historical man and as he said
12:04
we're going a long way to be able to
12:06
show people this is the new this is what
12:09
you should be aspiring to do when MC
12:10
Hammer was
12:12
doing Matteo dolls and movies and things
12:16
like that people's like oh he's sold out
12:18
that's a sellout now if you're not doing
12:20
that you're not selling out you're not
12:22
selling records right so you know he set
12:24
the status there sometimes the first get
12:26
it worse but we're going to be very
12:28
abrasive in this cultural moment of what
12:31
we're doing and changing narratives and
12:33
uh hey man this is uh this is this is
12:36
motivation 101. being from where we're
12:38
from this is this is a dream come true
12:40
for real this is a this is an
12:41
accomplishment for real because you know
12:43
a lot of people say we somebody like me
12:45
you know and everybody else we wasn't
12:47
supposed to be here you know due to the
12:49
circumstances and the conditions of our
12:51
soil you understand me being in the
12:53
trenches in the octagon and going
12:54
through you know so many things in the
12:56
Bay Area you know we beat the odds be
12:58
coming from a small little City Vallejo
13:00
California like 11 exits at the time you
13:03
know um it was unheard of I had to work
13:05
my way up the ladder to get the respect
13:07
of the town which is Oakland and the
13:09
rest of the Bay Area you know so I feel
13:12
like we accomplished something I've
13:13
accomplished something being in the
13:14
white house right here this honor and a
13:16
pleasure and to be doing this with my
13:18
fellas hello watch out we gotta make a
13:20
portrait of this shot right here it's a
13:23
dope shot actually that painted and you
13:24
guys are all color coordinated and black
13:26
I mean it's just such a good visual
13:27
representation of like movements
13:29
advancements where we are Heather you
13:32
want to talk about
13:34
um
13:35
just this the the what I said ever to
13:39
grab a toss of this moment having these
13:41
iconic gentlemen including myself here
13:43
being from the bay celebrating this
13:45
iconic basketball team the Golden State
13:47
Warriors what can you add to this
13:49
conversation
13:52
Heaven's not gonna give us the right
13:54
answers you know in her heart that we
13:57
are it we are it and she know it well
14:00
what I will say though is um for us just
14:03
sitting here listening to you guys like
14:04
we just saw a 40 and short a month ago
14:07
you know in L.A you know celebrating
14:10
Mount Westmore and it's just this wasn't
14:13
in the plans a month later like you just
14:16
never know in life to y'all's point
14:17
where your gifts gonna take you where
14:20
your art is gonna take you where your
14:22
love is gonna take you where your
14:24
passion is going to take you we were all
14:25
sitting down in a garage in L.A a month
14:28
ago you know and and if fast forward a
14:31
month later and we're here it's just a
14:33
beautiful thing thank you all for your
14:34
contribution like all jokes aside this
14:36
is crazy so nothing about the Warriors
14:38
amazing
14:40
nothing about the Warriors
14:43
okay uh so look check this out Heather
14:47
so if Steph Draymond clay any of them
14:50
came up and uh shook your hand you
14:51
wouldn't you wouldn't give him a hug oh
14:53
I would give him a hug it wouldn't be
14:54
genuine it would be absolutely genuine I
14:56
gotta respect their talent and
14:58
everything on the court but in front of
15:00
y'all now y'all
15:02
hey man our coach our coach is from a
15:06
player from her favorite team our coach
15:08
played for her favorite team yeah it's a
15:10
little family man when you you got to
15:12
break down the family tree see that's
15:13
why I'm here with these dudes was
15:15
cousins their whole life and just found
15:17
out 9-10 years ago you got to break down
15:19
the family tree man ain't that crazy
15:21
we're just talking about that I
15:23
mentioned I got like granddaddies or
15:25
something as cousins what is it it's
15:27
doing my granddaddy side Reverend
15:29
Thurman I'm Reverend Thurman's grandson
15:31
you know what I'm saying your dad
15:37
yeah
15:39
it's funny when we talked about it 40
15:41
said man people always told me my voice
15:43
sound like yours if you listen to my
15:46
voice like if you switch to the radio
15:47
and you heard my voice and you heard
15:48
sways you'd be like which one talking if
15:50
you listen to the radio you heard my
15:52
voice here
15:53
crazy man
15:56
can I ask you a question absolutely did
15:59
you go to the Million Man March
16:03
I didn't get close to the Million Man
16:06
March I came out to the east coast
16:08
though did you that's my full circle
16:10
moment right now I was into the Million
16:11
Man March yeah I was there I had to be
16:13
there I lived in Atlanta at the time we
16:15
got a caravan of cars came up and it was
16:17
it was I did not give a speech Earl but
16:21
you know I went out you talked because I
16:22
went shoulder to shoulders and I was
16:24
there because I'm one in a million
16:26
bone talking OG Cubone but it was a
16:29
beautiful thing that day man like it was
16:31
a it was something that you know
16:34
I've never experienced a feeling like
16:37
that like literally if the number was
16:39
one million nine hundred thousand or
16:41
whatever the number was it was black man
16:43
yeah and
16:45
it was no
16:47
no negative energy in the air and it was
16:50
like um
16:51
I just always remember the moment where
16:52
uh where the minister said everybody put
16:54
a dollar in the air yeah he said that's
16:57
a million dollars that's a real talk
16:58
that's a trip that's the power we have I
17:00
just it was just it was
17:02
you know being out here is bringing that
17:04
all back to me that's that's when they
17:06
was when they when they when they showed
17:07
that on TV we seen Brothers crying and
17:09
everything yeah it was very touching you
17:11
know what I mean it was needed back then
17:14
too in the 90s because the 90s was
17:15
mainly needed now early 90s it was way
17:18
man I seen an OG he said he said he kept
17:21
saying it back over and over he said
17:22
it's the greatest day of my life
17:24
yeah and I just I'll never get him
17:26
saying look he having his face and how
17:28
much he meant that
17:29
you know come a long way man what year
17:31
was what year was that 1996 and I say
17:33
like 96 96. it was a little calm down
17:36
back in 96. I thought okay because 92 it
17:39
was Manny
17:41
oh yeah in a microcosm of that nowhere
17:45
to the to the level of of that last
17:47
night I performed at Howard and
17:51
I was
17:52
mesmerized that I was around so many
17:54
black people in love no problems and it
17:58
was just I felt cheated because Oakland
18:00
doesn't have a HBCU yeah and I felt like
18:03
I want to do something
18:06
to start the fight to bring in HBCU to
18:09
Northern California a California in
18:12
general I feel like we deserve that
18:13
because kids get a chance they miss out
18:16
on an opportunity to like last night was
18:19
like I was like wow I've never been I
18:21
had never been to one and especially
18:23
going to the Morehouse Howard game it
18:25
was like extra extra I was like yo we
18:28
need to bring that so sway we need to do
18:29
something about I'm bringing 100
18:31
petitioning to get a HBCU yeah so you
18:35
went to HBCU right to Grammy State
18:36
University I'll be there on February 1st
18:40
um major announcement y'all see well
18:42
yeah I went to Graham State University
18:44
in Louisiana what was that experience
18:46
like just being from the Bay going out
18:47
there taught me how to be a man went out
18:49
there when I was 17 and a half years old
18:51
and um it just taught me how to be a man
18:54
I was on my own stating a Drew Hall dorm
18:56
uh worked in the kitchen washing dishes
19:00
to pay my tuition hello in real life you
19:02
better goon with the spoon I've been the
19:04
gun with the spoon ever since you
19:06
understand me I can remember man you
19:08
know but uh
19:10
yeah no it's just it just you know you
19:13
learn so much you know you learn how to
19:14
go you know we I've been doing it but
19:16
you know you got to go you know go to
19:18
the grocery store or get your eggs get
19:20
your bread get your butter your milk you
19:22
got to do all that we used to go to the
19:24
County Market take twenty dollars and
19:25
stretch it we was able to do that Back
19:28
in 88 I mean 86 it was Fallout 86 87
19:31
that's what it was yeah and so
19:34
um you know wash your clothes gotta you
19:36
know if you didn't have a basket you
19:38
know you put it you put your dirty
19:39
clothes in the pillowcase you know and
19:41
you then you put it over your shoulder
19:43
and walk down to the to the uh to the
19:44
Wash House on the campus you know what
19:46
I'm saying and uh we just had to we just
19:49
had to survive and I was rapping back
19:50
then and now the records out when I got
19:52
back I got in the studio immediately and
19:54
we made MVP most valuable players me
19:57
Deshawn sugar T and be legit
19:59
yeah the grit don't quit baby and I
20:02
stopped ever since so it's been 35 years
20:03
with music on the shelf and now you're
20:06
in the White House
20:08
come on we in the White House y'all
20:10
that's a round of applause right there
20:12
we are in the White House
20:15
it's short short if you could give a
20:17
President Biden any advice or
20:20
what would you say to him
20:22
I would tell him to get his jump shot
20:24
together like Obama
20:26
get a little light on your feet get that
20:29
jump shot you know okay okay that's fair
20:31
but not on the serious side note you
20:33
know um
20:34
I think that um
20:36
uh was really needed right now to me and
20:39
has always been it's just uh options man
20:42
options for our little ones man they
20:44
they get to they get in elementary
20:46
school everything is just like you know
20:48
bright eyes and you just see in the
20:49
world and then you get like middle
20:51
school high school and options start
20:53
dwindling but inner city kids and it's
20:55
like we try man we try we try to give
20:57
opportunities but if the nation would
21:01
just see it like that just opportunities
21:03
you know what I'm saying you ain't got
21:05
to make nobody do nothing a lot of kids
21:08
we we get to this point not in our in
21:10
our life in a city like Oakland 12 years
21:13
old 13 years old and you got these these
21:15
this is these are your options let me go
21:17
try to play sports let me stay my little
21:20
ass in school and try to do the best I
21:22
could be but let me get in these streaks
21:23
bro and and too many times we choose the
21:26
streets and we choose that because it
21:29
looks looking at everything like man I
21:31
ain't gonna make this Sports man you
21:33
know and I'm gonna tell you like this
21:34
too A lot of the reason why
21:36
our young our young ones choose the
21:38
streets is because you didn't give them
21:40
the right education from K through six
21:42
and they get to the the next level and
21:45
it's they're stumped and they like man
21:47
this ain't funny man these streets it's
21:49
right there right now and it's like
21:52
options opportunities opportunities yeah
21:55
we need options and opportunities
21:56
because a lot of times even I mean we
21:58
used to be outside when we was kids we
22:00
had the luxury of being outside coming
22:02
in when a porch light came on we didn't
22:04
even want to come in then but we had to
22:06
you know what I mean but they don't
22:08
really do that no more they play video
22:09
games and and be on social media and the
22:14
video games they turned it the the the
22:16
violent video games into real street
22:18
life like they think that the streets is
22:21
the video games you know what I mean so
22:24
um I think it should be more
22:25
opportunities just like sure I said more
22:26
after Sports
22:28
um you know entertainment is always a
22:30
plus
22:32
um you could say education you know
22:34
education you know showing them stuff
22:36
like they're showing them some footage
22:37
like this with us being From The
22:39
Trenches and being in the White House
22:41
you know what I mean like you can do it
22:43
too you know so
22:44
yeah yeah
22:48
being more intentional in the
22:51
connections and what I mean by the
22:53
connections is connecting with the
22:54
people connecting with uh standing on
22:57
the things that we say the commitments
22:59
that we're going to make and then
23:00
actually carrying them out
23:02
um what has happened is the missed
23:04
opportunity as my elders have alluded to
23:07
is
23:08
the reason why they go to the streets me
23:12
being right there dealing with a lot of
23:14
these kids on the front line on a daily
23:15
basis I see it
23:17
I see
23:19
um
23:20
I see what desperation does
23:22
and the mind state of where they're
23:24
feeling like why
23:26
they're doing it so we have to be more
23:28
intentional on how we connect to these
23:30
people and to these kids being able to
23:32
say to be there to be a provide for them
23:34
I think one of the biggest misconstrue
23:36
things that when people feel like they
23:38
need help people automatically associate
23:40
that with Finance
23:42
money is not a solution to everything
23:44
you just can't throw money at problems
23:46
because then you're disguising it and
23:48
then you're layering the problems so to
23:50
begin to unlayer these things is about
23:51
helping and healing and being
23:53
intentional in doing so
23:56
um
23:56
I know um
23:58
they killing us from the back but
24:00
guapolei wanted me to tell you guys that
24:03
she wanted to be here uh she was going
24:06
out of the country so big shout out to
24:08
the queen queen our area and I love you
24:11
guap and I told her that I would say
24:13
that and share that with you guys we
24:15
love Goapele yes indeed uh gentlemen man
24:18
I'm glad I got to experience this with
24:20
y'all yes you know we ain't gonna look
24:21
at each other the same when we back in
24:23
the bank because we got we done did this
24:26
but congratulations to you all you know
24:28
I see you in these front lines and you
24:30
sustain these amazing careers and then
24:32
you evolved you allowed yourselves to
24:34
evolve with it the same that's you know
24:36
that sometimes that's hard I had to
24:38
allow myself to evolve with the success
24:40
embrace it and move forward and keep
24:42
elevating and so by doing so man you
24:45
guys are pillars and I'm happy we shared
24:47
this moment together with you two
24:49
Heather and Mike Muse too
24:52
shout out to Midwest all right so let's
24:54
go celebrate these Warriors the number
24:56
one NBA team of this generation yes it's
24:59
