that man right there is a pillar
0:03
he's a statue
0:06
he's a rock
0:07
in this game in this culture
0:10
trust me when i tell you he's a pioneer
0:12
he's a vanguard
0:13
he ushered in the style in 1988
0:17
that plenty of singers and rappers are
0:19
getting paid for
0:21
right now in 2022 before there was drake
0:23
there was this man ladies and gentlemen
0:25
citizens from all walks of life thanks
0:28
singer songwriter producer performer
0:32
radio personality
0:34
y'all don't even know about his radio
0:36
career he was tearing up the streets of
0:38
the bay area when he was on the radio in
0:40
the bay area
0:41
home area
0:49
i remember the days man this guy ushered
0:52
in the era when we talked about new jack
0:54
swing that was just so important to our
0:57
development as artists as listeners as
1:00
consumers as
1:02
members of the community
1:04
he looks amazing right now he's a
1:06
grandfather that looks like he just had
1:08
his first kid
1:10

1:13
much history we could talk about but we
1:14

1:36
[Applause]
1:40

1:41
this for years
1:43

1:46
wish i could afford to take you on tour
1:48
with me oh my goodness
1:50
he'll pull up for free
1:59
let's get things in order first of all
2:00
i'm a very big fan of your format of you
2:03
just as a person and over the years that
2:06
watch you navigate and do what you do
2:08
and uh i'm not mad at you at all you've
2:10
been handling your business so
2:11
congratulations kudos black man to you
2:14
and your entire team for always just
2:16
keeping it keeping it before 2022 you
2:20
would keep it in 2022
2:22
so uh so we really appreciate you and
2:24
and your amazing team
2:26
um just continue to bless that platform
2:29
and keep it you know keep it real with
2:31
the people so thank you i appreciate you
2:33
got it lovely but let me fail now for a
2:36
second though
2:37
i'm sure man let me fan out man like you
2:39
know we we from the same high school so
2:41
to speak so as you would
2:44
you know we we we are i was on the west
2:46
coast witnessing it all being in memory
2:48
being intrigued by everything i was
2:51
seeing
2:52
any time i saw heavy d and mount vernon
2:55
wearing one of those what do you call
2:56
those jackets with the the leather with
2:57
the white fur on it uh
3:00
oh oh no
3:02
the bubble goose the bubble goose you
3:04
know whatever the wardrobe that was
3:06
coming out of mount vernon
3:08
for the kids but before the kids talk
3:10
about drip and all that we had the
3:11
bubble goose and we had the uh the sheep
3:13
dogs but the mittens and the matching
3:15
hat to go
3:31
street remember you had to go down and
3:32
save your little brother
3:36
i'll be sure we didn't have that in
3:38
oakland we didn't need that in oakland
3:40
it was too hot so we wasn't wearing all
3:43
that but we wanted all of that style man
3:46
and and so i just want to say
3:47
congratulations on your career on your
3:50
legacy
3:51
absolutely before we get into that
3:54
though march 26
3:56
i didn't know if i heard it correctly
3:59
but pete peter guns and and alby shaw
4:01
called me the other day and peter gunn
4:04
peter called me i was on the phone i
4:05
said i'll get back to pete we talk all
4:07
the time and then he texted me and said
4:09
i'm in the car without be sure
4:25
march 26th i i've heard of many a
4:27
producer a singer a songwriter a
4:30
performer a grandfather a radio
4:32
personality i never thought i would hear
4:34
the word a boxer what is going on
4:37
why is albie showing a celebrity boxing
4:40
match um that's taking place march 26th
4:42
what is happening
4:44
well you know um you can take me out of
4:47
money earning my own burning but you
4:48
can't take the money on the mount burn
4:49
out of me so i still got a little bolos
4:51
left you know you know a little bucket
4:53
list thing in addition to the uh the
4:55
organization reached out and contacted
4:57
me uh pre-covert and uh you know we're
5:00
trying to work something out you know
5:02
because everybody you know
5:03
was having these conversations yeah we
5:05
heard you you know because imagine me
5:07
trying to get home from school every day
5:08
from the north side to the south side of
5:10
mount ernie and uh and i never took my
5:13
chain
5:14
you know what it is and you know it is
5:16
what it is but you know when you're
5:17
young you know the priority is different
5:19
and you know it's all about having the
5:20
shiniest uh shoes and so on and so forth
5:23
and you know having the show to adidas
5:25
and having your bubble goose and so on
5:26
and so forth but keeping it moving but
5:28
uh you know the streets of mount vernon
5:30
raised me uh so big shout out to monthly
5:32
earning and and everybody there
5:35
and everybody from from butler to tutti
5:37
to you know man listen you you you know
5:40
those names come on you yes yes yes
5:42
family
5:43
and we like we got number love for you
5:45
and um and uh you know
5:48
it's just
5:50
you know it's just something you know
5:52
you know spending a majority of of my uh
5:55
professional career you know also
5:57
attending you know the mike tyson fights
5:59
all over i know you're seeing pictures
6:00
of us everywhere and stuff you know just
6:02
being a big fan of of understanding that
6:04
this is not necessarily a brute force uh
6:08
sport it's really a chess match for
6:10
intellects you know to outsmart each
6:12
other and uh being able to uh disconnect
6:15
someone's anatomy is it's a completely
6:17
different uh
6:18
genre but um you know i i thought it was
6:20
something curious and and you know all
6:22
praise do not lie you know i've
6:23
conquered so many other you know you
6:25
know it was number one and you know
6:26
music and number one and you know
6:28
great radio stuff you know just doing
6:30
everything and i come from the school of
6:32
quincy jones as you know and i wanted to
6:34
just truly um you know
6:36
try my hand at everything you know guess
6:38
what you know as long as i put my my
6:40
best foot forward and my effort you know
6:42
from what i learned i mean that's all i
6:44
can i can ask myself for and
6:46
just move and get out your own way
6:49
that's it i heard that hey it's taking
6:52
place march 26th if you're near unit
6:54
tri-state area it's going to be it's a
6:56
charity and he's going to be fighting
6:57
hazel the latin lover roche
7:00
and um yes sir yes sir
7:03
it's a big dude too he's twice my size
7:05
but you know uh i i have the uh the
7:07
legendary roy jones uh training me in
7:11
terms of you know making sure my jab
7:13
step is on point in addition to uh you
7:16
know my footwork and so and so forth and
7:18
just keeping it moving and you know
7:20
still being nimble as you know as my
7:22
brother like i you know over the last
7:24
few years you know i've lost up to 140
7:27
pounds basically deciding i wanted to so
7:30
you know to get you know get it right
7:32
um you know i let it slip a little
7:33
something i got to i think maybe i want
7:36
to say close to 309 pounds and which is
7:39
considered
7:40
uh medically obese so you know i did a
7:43
few things and i stopped you know the
7:45
bread rice and pasta and this you know
7:46
stuff turned the sugar in addition to i
7:48
wound up doing the bariatrics surgery
7:50
because it was detrimental to me having
7:52
diabetes type 2. you know so there's a
7:55
few things going on and then just going
7:56
into hospital just to check on you know
7:58
i was having some pain
8:00
uh found out that it had some other
8:01
complications and things of that nature
8:03
and uh you know as you know as black men
8:06
we're like now i'll go tomorrow you know
8:07
next week i'll make the appointment next
8:09
week but listen i want to encourage
8:10
everyone you know all of us my sisters
8:13
as well please
8:14
we need to go and then you know get
8:16
yourself checked out on a periodic basis
8:18
you know with all that's going on right
8:20
now just really take care of your health
8:22
you know ever since i turned 50 i've
8:23
been on this mission you know i did a
8:25
lot of beating up my body over the years
8:27
i'm going to keep it in 2022 with you
8:29
but
8:29
you know but
8:30
yeah but you know at the end of the day
8:33
it's not playing
8:45
get the money i'll be sure one more time
8:47
chase let me just say this this is uh on
8:49
the 26th march 26th um albee sure will
8:52

10:16
gentlemen
10:18
wow
10:20
peter why are you trying to get al
10:21
punched up in his face man what's this
10:23
about
10:25
[ __ ] man i i inspire al to do this al
10:28
saw me beat up on cisco he saw me the
10:30
first round knockout and he said yo guns
10:32
could do it my little brother could do
10:33
it i could do it
10:35
and
10:36
this is like what is that
10:38
i practiced my i fractured my wrist so i
10:40
told you be careful wait
10:42
yo why is it we why we get to this age
10:45
we want to jump in the ring what is that
10:47
about
10:48
[ __ ]
10:51
dumbass
10:52
you know just you get you get old and
10:54
crazy my doctor was like what's wrong
10:56
with you
10:59
you know rehab on my wrist he was like
11:01
what's wrong with you
11:02
you too
11:03
[Laughter]
11:05
you know what i i'd rather i'd rather
11:07
you know very in all seriousness i'd
11:09
rather you know do something of this
11:10
nature and uh make sure that uh you know
11:12
i wanted to also focus on giving you
11:14
know my philanthropic uh
11:16
spirit you know and and really you know
11:19
hone in on on giving some attention to
11:21
those who really really deserve it and
11:22
you know i know we're entertainers and
11:24
you know make people dance and you know
11:26
and entertain so so forth but there's
11:28
some people out there like um cheryl
11:30
action jackson who is the uh the founder
11:33
of minnie's pantry they've fed over 15
11:37
15 million meals to families you know
11:39
tiffany rose and l.a you know that
11:41
that's called mindy's pantry and
11:42
minnie's boutique tiffany rose in l.a
11:45
she has we feed the hungry which is my
11:47
friend's house l.a and they're spreading
11:48
around the country and they're in skid
11:49
row weekly giving toiletries stocks
11:52
clothing a good you know spare
11:54
spirituality you know they have in
11:56
church up in there you can find anybody
11:57
up in there like lakers and kardashians
12:00
you know it's just really a beautiful
12:01
thing and last last but not least we are
12:03
going to celebrate the uh the work of dr
12:07
dr sharpton and uh and just and all the
12:09
stuff that he does with nan national
12:11
action network so i want to make a you
12:12
know a donation dedication to my
12:15
commitment to these these particular
12:16
organizations there's so many out there
12:18
but these are my focus for now and and i
12:21
really like the work that they're doing
12:22
and i'm a fan of all of them and every
12:24
you know being such being so inspired
12:26
specifically by doctor reverend al
12:28
sharpton and and his his uh
12:30
we call him the general uh you know
12:32
attorney crump and just being being
12:34
there you know along with you know
12:36
rachel nodeling and seeing how these
12:39
uh you know sitting in the middle of a
12:41
funeral with these mothers with these
12:42
slain and murder
12:44
young young men and women i mean this it
12:46
completely changes your perspective uh
12:49
this way you know it's it's something
12:51
that you know if you didn't take life
12:53
seriously you know you know as you know
12:55
i don't talk too much every time i say
12:56
something that goes by or about stuff
12:58
crazy instead of understanding that is
13:01
understanding look don't let the love
13:02
songs fool you i'm just out here trying
13:04
to you know make this leave a legacy and
13:06
something you know for my amazing sons
13:08
big shout out to quincy devin and lual i
13:11
love you i appreciate you keep working
13:13
hard
13:14
i don't care what is that you wind up
13:15
doing but what i want you to do is be a
13:17
productive positive part of society
13:19
that's it
13:21
i'll be sure man so i i want to ask you
13:24
a lot of questions but i'm going to let
13:25
tracy and heather jump in hp you want to
13:27
want to say anything to him
13:29
yeah al what's up how you doing pete
13:31
what's up it's heather how y'all doing
13:36
just showing some love to you guys al i
13:38
wanted to start with you and just ask
13:40
you we always talk about you hear the
13:41
term
13:42
we didn't know hip hop would take it
13:44
this far like just to see us in
13:46
different arenas and different platforms
13:48
whether it's
13:49
movies television acting food all the
13:51
things that you even in your spaces you
13:54
mentioned as well what is it like for
13:55
you then when you see some of the
13:57
artists that you started out with and
13:59
remember being on the radio your record
14:01
was number two and their record was
14:03
number four and you see them now doing
14:04
residencies in different places in vegas
14:07
like do you are you guys a r b community
14:10
as well um is it love there is it like
14:13
how are you guys with each other you
14:16
know what that that's a great question
14:18
um you know i i've got you know in the
14:20
words of have you know i've gotten
14:22
nothing but love for my family you know
14:24
and very specifically that that genre of
14:26
music in terms of you know the 80s 90s
14:28
movement you know along with the the uh
14:31
i call him the creator of uh you know
14:33
new jack swing mr teddy riley um a
14:36
genius within his own right um
14:38
and and my my partner in crime and and
14:42
and and do good and intellect and then
14:45
crypto currency and music and you know
14:47
we know him as dj eddie f what a
14:50
brilliant young man we started week
14:52
money under mount vernon all day and we
14:54
started in the basement uh you know in
14:56
mount vernon you know
14:57
working on productions and and just kept
15:00
coming up with stuff and then we wound
15:01
up going to center for media arts down
15:02
here by you know nyu and doing you know
15:05
studying engineering so eddie kind of
15:07
invented that uh if you stay ready you
15:09
don't have to get ready he wanted us to
15:11
become educated so as we became real
15:13
full-fledged producers and producing for
15:14
major labels
15:16
you know we really know we wanted the
15:17
sound we wanted things of that nature so
15:19
just about being prepared um
15:22
and and i'm like i said to you i'm very
15:24
happy to see in fact we took it a step
15:26
further eddie and i have been discussing
15:29
uh
15:30
uh you know as it relates to on the
15:32
publishing side of things like right now
15:34
we're in this this space now where
15:36
there's an intellect i don't want to go
15:38
too technical but there's an
15:39
intellectual property law that states
15:41
you know about you know intellectual
15:42
property rights and so on publishing
15:44
things of that nature i don't i don't i
15:46
don't want to i don't want to ruin this
15:48
sexy but i'm a little bit of a cornball
15:49
i'm into google analytics data
15:51
footprints and understanding the
15:52
logistics of what an artist you know
15:54
represents around the globe and the
15:56
territories and things of that nature um
15:58
but yeah it's amazing so what we decided
16:01
to do is something called legacy artist
16:03
advocates and basically you know we put
16:05
a team together of very prominent
16:08
individuals uh you know which will be
16:10
doing a big announcement you know be it
16:12
be a no linger uh and and we we uh it's
16:16
gonna be pretty amazing because all
16:17
we're basically attempting to do is
16:20
help these artists recover their
16:22
royalties you got to realize a lot of
16:23
these artists make and may not be doing
16:25
well in certain you know because you
16:26
know music goes in rotations and that's
16:28
just like asking you
16:30
imagine asking your accountant to play
16:32
the piano and survive it just may not
16:34
work you know what i'm saying because so
16:35
some people are just really good at
16:36
being a guitar player really going to be
16:38
a singer they not make they're not a
16:39
lawyer they're not account and it's
16:41
really hard to trust you know especially
16:42
within this industry so
16:44
once you get that on board in terms of
16:46
um
16:47
you know we just decided you know what
16:48
let's because it's impossible to get you
16:50
know head of legal legal affairs or
16:52
business affairs or anybody on the phone
16:54
in these companies
16:57
that's true come on and there's a lot of
16:59
people out there that have been stealing
17:00
our royalties
17:02
shout out to the to the people of the
17:04
good folks on that sugar hill
17:07
but you know we got to explain how they
17:09
did it though but how did they do it
17:10
though there was a there was a statue of
17:12
limitation on being able to claim
17:17
it's an intellectual property law which
17:18
is done in 1976 but where the stuff
17:21
starts to revert to you have to go back
17:22
to your full copyright and ownership
17:24
but but real quick just to end that off
17:27
um
17:28
the key to it was now that we we put
17:30
this team together and basically
17:32
basically you know
17:34
now now all these companies have what's
17:36
called portals and basically you know
17:38
there's no more fuzzy math so you know
17:40
let's say let's say bob the artist is
17:41
having a hard time paying his rent he
17:43
doesn't realize he might have 650 he
17:45
might have some bands sitting at you
17:47
know mca row or universal what have you
17:50
but it's just you know we're just trying
17:51
to bridge that gap and assist these
17:53
artists and
17:54
yeah yo but what i'm trying to tell you
17:56
is there's a company rich kid
17:58
entertainment good folks over at sugar
18:00
hill that have been going and getting
18:02
people royalties overseas
18:04
so they've been they've been paying the
18:05
wrong people because it's a scam i'm
18:07
telling you what i know
18:08
remember yeah yeah yeah and i am aware
18:10
that oh yeah i'm aware of that part as
18:11
well what they also do is help you
18:13
market your catalog to advertisers as
18:15
well in addition to you know getting the
18:17
songs placed but that's that's the next
18:18
step also doing is you know reclaiming
18:20
the catalog and then finally because if
18:22
you think about why why is you know
18:24
night and day not an att commercial you
18:26
know or you know something of that
18:28
nature you know at this stage but but
18:29
again now you know you know we're
18:31
savvier eddie and i have been taking the
18:33
bulldog horns and we are truly just
18:35
trying to uh really take this and take
18:38
it to another level and assist these
18:39
artists and getting their royalties that
18:41
they just do i mean i i literally just
18:43
to be honest you know i'm gonna keep it
18:44
2022. what year did i executive produce
18:47
and produce all that jonasy stuff do you
18:49
realize i i got my first jealousy check
18:52
maybe in the last year and it's not even
18:54
a full check like and we did 80 million
18:58
oh i'm trying to listen
19:01
forever my lady
19:03
that's not the only thing i didn't
19:05
spread my lady steak come and talk to me
19:07
all of that whole first album
19:09
and i and and and and our team you know
19:12
you know we put that whole that whole
19:13
thing together puff puffs and uh and
19:15
andre came to me and said you know they
19:17
started working on stuff but i was on
19:18
tour
19:19
you know with new edition and bobby
19:21
brown you know they said he came back
19:22
and said you know once we got all this
19:23
stuff together you and davonte go lock
19:24
up get this thing together you know then
19:27
we we he said he said quote unquote he
19:29
said yeah do that quincy jones thing you
19:31
do like put to get that album and put it
19:32
together but they the guys are already
19:34
brilliant in their own right and uh i
19:36
was just there to make sure that
19:38
everything was presentable i am i'm just
19:41
truly
19:43
you ain't saying everything why why not
19:46
wait why you didn't get told i'm trying
19:47
to tell you sweet i'm trying to tell you
19:49
what he mentioned
20:00
and these are all brothers of yours
20:03
who had the money why why didn't you get
20:05
the money no the right the right the
20:06
record labels the record labels you know
20:09
until we figured out this whole thing
20:10
now because of technology see technology
20:12
moves much faster than the laws so
20:14
technology has allowed us to uh
20:17
uh you know like i said these now all of
20:19
these things are assigned to uh catalog
20:21
numbers you know the songs and the
20:23
copyrights and so on so forth so you
20:24
know i don't like i don't get too
20:25
technical but at the end of the day this
20:27
money is sitting there with major
20:29
interest behind it so please you know
20:31
reach out if you're interested in uh you
20:33
know uh regaining uh recovering your
20:35
royalties now actually what's really
20:37
good is that you know we've been having
20:39
this dialogue in public you know
20:40
reverend sharpton you know attorney
20:42
crump eddie f
20:43
um james you know we've been you know
20:46
having this conversation publicly and we
20:48
just realized that i think maybe three
20:50
of those major companies have now
20:52
forgiven the royalties from those legacy
20:55
artists from the 80s and 90s i don't
20:57
think warner brothers has done it yet
20:59
come on warner brothers let's get it
21:00
together let's let's let's get this
21:02
thing right
21:03
but people reach out to you said please
21:05
reach out but who should they reach out
21:06
to is it what pete is talking about yeah
21:09
they they can
21:10
yeah
21:11
you know what they can they can reach
21:12
out to me you know just dm me you know
21:14
i'm official i'll be showing everything
21:16
and my team goes through most of the
21:17
stuff you know because you know look at
21:18
promoters everybody's always going
21:20
besides just people who are just true
21:22
music enthusiasts who just want to talk
21:24
about music and things that are nature
21:25
but you know i try to shout out to eddie
21:27
much love
21:32
brilliant absolutely brilliant and and
21:34
mining ethereum and cryptocurrency and
21:36
it's amazing because right now we're
21:38
about to do i just did a record uh with
21:40
snoop dogg and we're corrupt it's called
21:42
nfts and smoking treats
21:45
[Laughter]
21:49
okay
21:52
all right pete we got peter guns with us
21:54
as well march 26 celebrity boxing match
21:57
has taken place
21:58
uh albie shore will be stepping into the
22:01
ring ladies have no fret he's from mount
22:04
vernon his knuckle game is nice the face
22:10
face will not be ruined
22:13
yes i do al you know i'm so glad that
22:16
you touched on your health because
22:17
beyond your legacy beyond your career
22:20
beyond these new money moves we have to
22:22
celebrate your health because especially
22:24
last year when i believe you revealed
22:26
that you had four to six months
22:28
with us
22:29
yeah
22:30
yeah you know what i i like i said i'm
22:32
glad i went in just to check out i was
22:34
having some abdominal pain and uh and i
22:36
called a dear friend and they you know
22:38
made arrangements to go get checked out
22:40
you know in an expedited manner and i'm
22:42
glad i did because finding out that it
22:44
was some some strange thing with my
22:46
gallbladder was growing back into my
22:48
liver and i had sludge and then they
22:50
went in and they found three abdominal
22:52
abscesses so i was in and out of the
22:53
hospital you know nine months i mean it
22:55
was just it was a you know just it was
22:57
an eye-opener and just a wake-up call
23:00
for me to you know basically you know
23:02
just really take this bull by the horns
23:04
and let you know i wanted to live you
23:05
know i got i have a few listen
23:08
and in all seriousness man i appreciate
23:10
y'all so much and i appreciate
23:11
everything you said in terms of you know
23:13
my accomplishments and things of that
23:15
nature and then you know what i do i
23:16
think of i'm like man
23:18
there's this guy named quincy jones man
23:20
i haven't done nothing yet man i got a
23:22
lot of work to do you know what i mean
23:24
it's like you think of that oh wait big
23:26
shout out happy birthday quincy jones i
23:28
love you big brother
23:30
um you know we all love you we
23:31
appreciate you
23:33
um
23:35
yeah yeah man but cute
23:37
q's been accused been quite a blessing
23:39
over the years and just just in terms of
23:41
you know you get around cats like that
23:43
you just shut up you shut up and listen
23:45
and you just like you're like
23:46
[Music]
23:47
you know
23:48
you name your son after him
23:51
yeah yeah yeah absolutely
23:53
that's a lot that says a lot your son is
23:55
amazing man ball your sons yeah
23:58
q's been up on the show a ton of times
24:00
you love him love how he feels no he's
24:02
got now
24:03
hate
24:09
can you talk about your early days like
24:11
i i andre harrell is somebody that i
24:14
really admired i grew up you know just
24:15
really
24:16
him and russell a few dudes in terms of
24:18
their business acclimate i really grew
24:20
up modeling myself after them
24:22
what can you tell us about andre harrell
24:24
because i know he was instrumental in
24:26
discovering you and even bringing you
24:28
and quincy jones together can you talk
24:30
about that time what was that like how
24:31
did that happen what did he say to you
24:33
what kind of things did he say to you
24:35
wow andre andre was the
24:38
you know
24:39
the chief
24:40
marketing
24:42
guru
24:43
intro you know i kind of patted my
24:45
portfolio after dre because he uh you
24:47
know he had what's called that that
24:49
spirit of discernment to connect the
24:51
dots
24:52
and you know and to be able to find that
24:54
talent he was i was was amazing for
24:56
talent in terms of you know and you
24:58
could be real rough with yours and he'll
25:00
figure that he says yeah i see through
25:02
this yeah take them jeans and put a
25:04
little hole in the lid like he was
25:06
always you know inventing
25:08
and uh and
25:09
[Music]
25:11
you know again
25:13
in the end what we would attempt to do
25:15
was take uptown uptown records and
25:18
uh basically mold it into a boutique
25:20
version of what motown represent you
25:22
know uh which i think we accomplished
25:25
that mission so just imagine you know we
25:27
you know teddy f and i you know really
25:28
the way it all started because i've
25:29
heard all this and i hear 100 million
25:31
different stories um you know russell
25:34
russell uh sealed it by explaining how
25:36
you know the whole departure with he and
25:38
andre and he was very supportive of
25:39
andre but you know russell had it on
25:41
lock with like you know public enemy and
25:43
beastie boys that loud you know that you
25:45
know just that that aggressive hip-hop
25:47
and he really wasn't feeling the whole
25:49
heav and you know
25:51
commercial you know hip-hop you know
25:52
mixture because that wasn't his lane he
25:54
was so incredible that he was just
25:55
rocking with that he was smart so again
25:58
in russell manor he was just busy trying
25:59
to bless bless his man
26:01
and then you know he went off on his own
26:03
no pun intended you know and you know
26:06
and then what happened was
26:08
we literally
26:09
eddie f and i were in the basement and
26:11
he was always spending these records
26:12
with this death jam logo on it you know
26:14
he's rocking you know slick rick beasty
26:16
boys run dmc so and so forth right
26:19
public enemy um and i remember
26:22
very clearly that one day we had a flood
26:24
in the basement peter i think i'll tell
26:26
you the story eddie and if we had a
26:28
flood in the basement and eddie was the
26:29
best dj in mount vernon right so that
26:31
was our weekend gigs we used to go do
26:33
parties and stuff and i was the emcee at
26:35
least i thought i was you know but i i
26:38
thought i wanted to be
26:39
burning some parties
26:42
you were crazy
26:46
mount vernon oh my god
26:55
i got a question for big bro too hold on
26:57
yo al did you know denzel back then
27:01
um no no no no mount vernon i'll just
27:03
hear you
27:04
i never
27:06
yeah you know it's funny i didn't meet
27:08
him until afterwards i think i probably
27:09
met him at like at b smith's one night
27:12
you know on eighth avenue like you know
27:13
back in the day whatever and then you
27:15
know we kind of laughed about the
27:16
remember that yeah god wrestled us old
27:18
man barbara was you know a dear friend
27:20
and an incredible incredible black woman
27:23
just like this amazing i mean just good
27:25
people too and uh you know like i said
27:27
gareth soul um but yeah so you know and
27:30
you know and it's strange because mount
27:32
vernon obviously is the first uh city
27:34
outside of the boogie down bronx you
27:36
know the five boroughs
27:37
and it's just a four square mile town
27:40
with a lot of drip before the word drip
27:42
became you know popular and and just in
27:45
terms of artists who are just truly
27:46
aggressive and really
27:48
truly truly into their craft you know
27:50
and uh and why are they calling me right
27:52
now so uh somebody call him
27:55
yeah yeah
27:57
i think
27:58
yeah
27:59
i think it's right
28:00
here
28:15
yeah it was crazy right let me ask you
28:17
this when um when new jack swing first
28:20
became popular did y'all know what it
28:22
was did you understand what was going on
28:25
that this was becoming a new era in
28:27
music like what do you recall from them
28:29
days
28:30
i recall well i remember andre you know
28:32
you know fast forward andre putting me
28:35
on you know telling me to get on this
28:36
train this was before i had a record
28:38
outside he got told me get on train go
28:39
to 125th street i had this guy i want
28:42
you to meet theodore and then you know i
28:43
went over there i wanted to stand here
28:45
for six months sleeping on dude's couch
28:47
he taught me song arrangement he taught
28:48
me you know programming things of that
28:50
nature but it was something so like
28:53
the technology moves much faster like
28:55
just
28:56
he was just so amazing just in terms of
28:58
just seeing how
29:00
he would navigate with these drum
29:01
machines and these things and his rhythm
29:03
was just unheard of like he's truly a
29:05
prodigy teddy rifley
29:07
i can't listen if you you can't say
29:09
nothing about teddy well that man is a
29:11
genius um
29:12
andre is so funny because as we were
29:15
commencing on uh working on the
29:17
life story you know with andre herrell
29:19
and uptown records uh he he said yo you
29:22
know there's three people who really
29:23
know how to do new jack swing that says
29:25
teddy riley
29:26
dj nef and i'll be sure right so
29:29
so every time he said you know it was
29:31
always you know blessing to hear him say
29:32
that because we really we love the genre
29:34
but let me tell you something you know
29:35
who who created that phrase
29:38
uh new jack swing was
29:41
uh the writer the film writer barry
29:43
michael cooper
29:44
and basically what he what what he
29:46
talked about you know who created you
29:47
know uh you know he did all that new
29:49
jack city uh uh jason's lyric above the
29:52
rim you know he's involved with all
29:54
those cult classic films um and you know
29:57
but he coined that phrase and basically
29:58
he talked about it being the music of
30:00
the struggle you know out of it from the
30:03
cotton club and on you know kind of at
30:05
hall and you know
30:06
it's real out here and hustle and that
30:08
was the rhythm of the street that took
30:09
our minds away from all of the uh
30:11
you know the hoses and things of that
30:13
nature because that's where that first
30:15
swing came from and then teddy riley
30:16
just
30:17
made it electric and uh and just truly
30:35
i knew this pete you know i know this i
30:38
remember when when when night came out
30:40
but that wasn't him on the album cover
30:41
that wasn't him on the album coming that
30:43
song
30:44
but you can hear it with him because his
30:46
voice you saying he got he got joked
30:48
okay what you
30:55
together and we had done a bunch of
30:56
records together you know and teddy
30:57
wasn't working a little bit everybody
30:59
but um you know we cut all type of demos
31:02
and do certain things and i think teddy
31:03
tells the story about how gene griffin
31:05
said they were trying to meet a death
31:06
line uh instead of a deadline and uh
31:10
that funny
31:12
okay so uh but
31:14
yeah right it's like 40 years later
31:16
that's my man big shout out embarrassing
31:18
peace king um but yeah we're trying to
31:20
meet a deadline i think for mca records
31:22
for them to release the record and then
31:23
he said he said he told teddy he said
31:25
teddy come here
31:26
put that old that boy on there you know
31:28
that boy from mount vernon
31:30
he said wasn't
31:37
and it was all good because it's you
31:39
know at the end of the day it was all a
31:40
collaborative effort in terms of you
31:42
know we all would work together you know
31:43
terry robinson tabitha you know tarajita
31:46
you know from the girls and teddy riley
31:48
and kyle west break it down kevin dean
31:51
you know you
31:52
and then you know devonte and then under
31:54
the devante he had timberland and he had
31:57
belgian i mean it was genuine and messy
31:59
elliot so it was like this big
32:01
collective of just it was it was motown
32:04
on steroids it was like part you know
32:06
the the new version of what motown
32:07
represented you know andre hill we would
32:10
call him baby barry gordy and he would
32:12
call me
32:13
baby quincy jones
32:15
um but again but let me just give you a
32:17
quick one this is how to start it eddie
32:18
and i in the basement he's rocking had a
32:20
flood
32:22
had to scurry and get all the wires off
32:23
the thing so i as i'm picking up the
32:25
wires i found there was a yellow pages
32:27
and and the thing i had to pick it up i
32:28
was drying it off
32:30
and for some reason out of ignorance i
32:32
just picked it up and i looked up after
32:33
him and i called
32:35
and i called 20 times and i i kept
32:37
making a mess piece i speak to russell
32:39
simmons please so i kept getting the
32:41
kind of like you know you know like yeah
32:42
what kid calls for mom vernon on the
32:44
wall phone you know from the yellow
32:46
pages and he has to speak to russell
32:48
simmons like i'm gonna really get
32:49
russell simmons on the phone right so i
32:51
kept asking so finally after the 30th
32:53
call and i said well you know i'm
32:54
working with this group because i wasn't
32:56
part of the group heavy being the boys
32:58
but so i said
32:59
hey i got this group you know from money
33:01
under mount vernon and he was like you
33:04
mean all your budgie [ __ ] who think
33:05
y'all from the bronx
33:11
and i said no i said well you know heavy
33:13
d and the voice says with the fat boys
33:14
and said no sir i said this is something
33:16
a little different you know we got a
33:18
little you know melodic you know
33:20
temperament and it's you know beats as
33:22
hard as studios
33:24
so but you know we mixed it up
33:27
get that little r b and hip hop and so
33:29
on and so forth
33:30
and uh
33:31
that's the way it started basically we
33:33
started that dialogue and then i said
33:34
they wound up getting meeting and we
33:36
eddie and i cut the demo called it's a
33:38
party all right the first cassette demo
33:39
on that tascam 244 and they went to have
33:42
their meeting but the great thing was
33:43
that you know they got the deal
33:45
congratulations but eddie f being my
33:48
brother always kept my cassette right in
33:50
his back pocket and every time he was on
33:52
the move and moving around these big
33:53
circles of entertainment now you know he
33:56
you know check my man check my man check
33:58
my man he said he saw he decided i got
33:59
nothing to love that yes man because
34:01
he's just he was relentless with you
34:02
know just always being selfless being
34:04
selfless and putting putting his man
34:06
first you know like come on man we gonna
34:08
get everybody get their deals together
34:09
we won't you know let's get produced
34:11
let's go to school you know this it was
34:12
everything he was just always trying to
34:14
educate us
34:18
so many we could cover
34:20
um who today
34:22
i'll be sure uh when you think of the
34:24
voices i i mentioned drake earlier um
34:27
because he's had so much success and and
34:30
he you know and it and he's
34:32
very proud of drake man very proud
34:34
decisional rapper the consistent the
34:36
consistency the consistency and that's
34:39
that's to me the key in terms of what
34:41
drake is doing them he's just he's
34:42
coming hit after hit after hit
34:44
and you know he's not compromising he's
34:48
he's keeping his signature sound on you
34:50
know and he's keeping lights getting
34:51
[ __ ] alive
34:54
and that's what albe short did he kept
34:56
light-skinned dudes up in the forefront
34:57
that's what you would drink
35:08
has any of the guys
35:10
the newer guys have any of them reached
35:12
out to work with you
35:14
yeah you know what
35:15
especially over the last few years and
35:17
stuff when people you know when stuff
35:18
started to come out you know saying it
35:20
wait you know
35:21
we didn't know what he wrote and
35:22
produced i didn't because my thing i
35:24
never wanted the accolades i swear you
35:26
know what my thing was just always i
35:27
like to put the work in so we just
35:29
stayed in that studio i was on hours and
35:31
you know come on come on guns you know
35:33
how it is you just you live breathe and
35:36
and start smelling like ssl uh you know
35:39
you know mixing boards and uh
35:42
i hear a lot of you in today's music
35:44
believe it or not i hear a couple i had
35:47
a couple of artists that
35:48
i can hear you know sounding like they
35:51
have the sound a little bit because if
35:52
you notice the sound the old sound is
35:54
coming back it's sampling
35:56
a lot of the old joints or just not even
35:57
sampling recreating them
35:59
so uh yeah you know i think they even
36:01
created one of your joints it was hot
36:03
yeah so it is it comes full circle
36:06
but it is very humbling i mean because i
36:09
i'm
36:10
so funny i just found out i'm in the i'm
36:12
in the webster's dictionary on the albe
36:14
show and then i think it's another one
36:15
of the page page brothers or something
36:18
i'm like
36:20
i'm like so i'm i've officially i've
36:22
officially become an adjective and
36:24
you're one of the highest google people
36:26
on google with some crazy what was that
36:27
i heard about you
36:29
oh you know because he said he said yo
36:31
you google michael jordan and you know
36:33
obviously no way am i comparing myself
36:34
to the michael jordan i said he said
36:36
google michael jordan you get eight
36:37
hundred million you go by i'll be sure
36:38
for some reason it's at 1.5 billion i
36:40
was like get out of here
36:43
but you know
36:44
that's just
36:46
but it's it just goes to say in terms of
36:48
my example you know obviously as
36:51
as an old school artist i you know i i
36:53
stay pretty much on top of my social
36:56
media and you know
36:58
staying engaged with you know uh people
37:01
who enjoy listen i'm just appreciative
37:03
of anybody who's allowed my heart to be
37:05
part of the journey over the years and
37:06
that's that's that's more humbling than
37:08
anything else you know i mean just
37:09
listen you can listen to a thousand
37:10
artists and then you know people in my
37:12
camp and people my camp are like listen
37:14
they say yo you like all black justin
37:16
bieber it's like what do you mean he
37:17
says man
37:18
you know you were booked until 2025. i
37:20
said they want to see all over the
37:21
planet and i'm like it's just humbling
37:23
people don't know when i'm on stage i
37:24
spend the first three minutes of tears
37:26
behind my sunglasses because
37:28
whether it's whether it's two thousand
37:30
people or twenty thousand people and we
37:32
in a package and i i walk out and it's
37:34
just like it just refused my spiritual
37:36
tank you know i mean it's just it's such
37:37
a blessing being that kid from mount
37:39
vernon who was standing in my room
37:41
trying to do new addition steps and
37:43
bobby brown and try to dance like
37:44
michael jackson with the little black
37:46
and white tv on the chair with the where
37:48
the rabbit is come on you already know
37:50
yeah come on man
37:54
pete was a big he was a prince fan right
37:57
pete was dressed up like friends when he
37:59
was little mike
38:01
mike am i too my
38:03
that no that was a fact that wasn't even
38:05
a rim shot right there i'll be sure
38:07
listen this is just the first of a
38:09
series of conversations i would love to
38:11
have with absolutely you know cause i
38:13
you know you're you're you're history
38:16
living you know what i mean your present
38:18
and your future
38:19
and i know you you went viral a few
38:22
times for a lot of controversial uh
38:25
remarks that were made and we could
38:27
probably talk about that the next time
38:29
but i want people to really understand
38:31
you know how important you have been to
38:33
the evolution of r b music uh soul music
38:36
in general and and then what you
38:38
represent today look how good this guy
38:40
looks look at that blazer look at that
38:42
top hat he's a grandfather
38:46
god bless
38:47
no god bless you know what i listen to
38:50
like i said i so appreciate you first of
38:51
all thank you for allowing me on your
38:54
massive massive platform around the
38:56
world you know thank you i truly
38:57
appreciate you and your team man you you
38:59
got you got you got the queens and the
39:01
building i love it man i got the best
39:03
team in the game
39:06
i see you powerful that's right
39:08
it ain't another combination like it in
39:10
radio they're starting to emulate it now
39:12
but it ain't another combination like it
39:14
in right yeah
39:15
but
39:16
but you see it maybe stealing it
39:19
they've been stealing listen we just
39:21
call that a form of appreciation that's
39:23
all it is that's all it is and
39:25
and you know what i want to mention too
39:26
so now i've also decided because i had
39:29
to wait till 50 because you know where
39:30
i'm from you know mount vernon hall of
39:32
you know you don't talk but ever since
39:34
you when you turn 50 you get a pass so
39:35
i'm finally going to embark on on my new
39:38
book which will be a title
39:41
from mount vernon to the moon and back
39:43
right and then and also my life it's
39:45
also my life story you know it's
39:47
somewhat reminiscent of the bobby brown
39:49
and new edition formats but the story is
39:52
something completely you know
39:54
you slay
39:56
but you already know
39:58
that i mean i couldn't even get into it
39:59
and guess what and guess what yeah and
40:01
they're gonna they're gonna hear the
40:02
truth whether they like it or not
40:04
because all this a lot of times listen
40:07
man i get used so much for traffic and
40:09
blogs and listen i don't i don't need to
40:11
do record out i don't need a tv show for
40:13
some reason but but i'm blessed that
40:15
there's a curiosity in terms of you know
40:17
that digital footprint and uh and then
40:19
people are just being curious and at the
40:21
end of the day i love the simple fact
40:22
that everyone swears that they know my
40:24
whole life story of business that they
40:25
have no clue and you know and i just let
40:28
the blogs just roll with it and you know
40:30
this this conspiracy theory and alan
40:32
puffin listen i'm proud of black man i
40:35
wanted to see him you know
40:36
thrive more and be able to affect change
40:39
and you know practice philanthropy and
40:42
then just the more that we have the more
40:43
we can give to others who are in need
40:45
and that's really kind of my play you
40:47
know forget all that extra who don't
40:48
like who and who's dating who and who's
40:50
smashing this you know that's fantastic
40:53
you know leave that to you know
40:55
i mean to leave that to those those who
40:57
need who need to you know feed from that
40:59
so um but you know like
41:02
what's the state of your relationship
41:04
with puff now
41:06
um
41:08
you know what he he's he's doing his
41:10
thing i'm proud of him and uh
41:13
you know there's no beef that i know you
41:15
know you know you know you know what it
41:16
is just everybody else creates it around
41:19
look i'm just happy look
41:20
my son is thriving you know we
41:22
co-parenting what have you um you know
41:25
kim blessed it
41:26
uh and uh you know caress our soul
41:30
we're gonna god wrestle so what a
41:32
wonderful lake what a wonderful lady and
41:34
uh what amazing oh you know it's one you
41:36
know prior to passing away we're
41:38
actually all together as the uh
41:40
at netflix you know for um for my
41:42
youngest for quincy's new uh
41:45
uh christmas special called holiday
41:47

41:48
really well so congratulations good
41:50
movie man very good movie and and we you
41:53
know america needs something g rated
41:55
right about now sway you know i mean
41:56
yeah so so nice to see that um
41:59
and uh you know this but we were all
42:01
together and you know she was doing
42:02
fantastic at the uh at the premiere and
42:05
you know uh puff came through you know
42:07
it was just it was a star-studded event
42:09
it was so nice just to see the support
42:11
and you know and a big thank you to
42:13
everybody out there who support any of
42:14
my my youth and and their endeavors
42:17
and entertainment and things like that
42:18
big shout out to devon loud was rocking
42:20
doing all that trap you know they got it
42:22
on locking atl and and little b short
42:25
you know he he's singing his face off
42:27
and he my oldest he you know he told me
42:29
that that young man singing of course
42:31
you know quincy doing exact thing and
42:33
and i had an opportunity to hear some of
42:35
that new album
42:37
i took we took him to harlem we went to
42:38
go see
42:39
uncle god and and uncle guns and we went
42:42
up to harlem and rolled around and
42:43
listened to quantities out it's crazy
42:45
i'm like you know i gotta hold it back
42:47
i'm trying to be like you know that i'm
42:49
like yo that's hot and i'm like yo
42:51
that's hot
42:52
[Laughter]
42:54
but thank you for sharing that y'all was
42:56

42:58
