Aug 28, 2026
Los Angeles, United States - August 28, 2026 08/27/2026 08:30 pm GMT-0700 LAWNDALE, Calif. – A deep partial lunar eclipse was visible across Southern California on Thursday evening, with the moon taking on a red-copper hue as it moved into Earth's shadow. Video captured from Lawndale showed the eclipse as it progressed through the night. The partial phase began at 7:34 p.m. and was expected to peak at 9:13 p.m., when about 96 percent of the moon would be covered by Earth's dark inner shadow. The partial phase was expected to end at 10:52 p.m. The reddish color occurs as sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere is filtered and bent toward the moon, producing colors similar to those seen during a sunrise or sunset. The eclipse was visible to the naked eye across Southern California, with no special eye protection required.
