It remains the only stadium officially recognized by FIFA as the Historic Monument of World Football. Located in the Parque Batlle neighborhood of the Uruguayan capital, the stadium’s foundation was laid on July 21, 1929. Designed by architect Juan Antonio Scasso, it was completed in approximately six months using 14,000 cubic meters of concrete, after 160,000 cubic meters of earth were excavated and 200,000 pieces of turf were laid. Today, Centenario Stadium continues to symbolize the origins of the FIFA World Cup and serves as a landmark of the sport’s global heritage. The adjacent Uruguay Football Museum preserves memorabilia and documents reflecting the country’s rich football history and the legacy of the first World Cup.
