Ambulance crews responded to 642 category one incidents on Wednesday, the most serious emergency cases, including cardiac arrests and patients who were not breathing. The surge came as temperatures reached 36.1C in parts of the UK on Wednesday, setting a new June record, while forecasters said the record was broken again the following day.
