Temperatures reached 35.7 degrees Celsius in Charlwood, Surrey, exceeding the previous June record set during the country’s notable 1976 heatwave. Authorities issued a rare red weather warning as extreme heat affected parts of the country, prompting hundreds of schools to either close completely or allow students to leave early. The latest heatwave comes 50 years after the summer of 1976, when prolonged high temperatures led to water shortages and emergency measures across parts of the UK. Despite setting a new June record, temperatures remained below the UK's all-time high of 40.3 degrees Celsius, registered in July 2022.
