Spain's Territorial Policy Minister Angel Victor Torres announced the updated data during a visit to the city. Between late July and early August, a massive wave of undocumented migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, triggering Spain's most severe border crisis in recent years. Torres said that the vast majority of the migrants were repatriated or returned to Morocco within 24 to 48 hours. However, at least 83 people died during the mass border crossing, according to the latest figures from Spanish authorities. Previously, estimates regarding the true scale of the influx varied significantly. Ceuta President Juan Jesus Vivas had earlier suggested the number could reach 80,000. The Spanish central government's initial estimate stood at 72,000, while Moroccan authorities put the figure at about 40,000. The mass border crossing has ignited intense debate over the need to strengthen the European Union's external borders and sparked friction among the bloc's member states. Several nations, including Italy, France and Germany, have expressed heightened concern and vigilance, fearing these undocumented migrants might eventually cross into their territories.
