VARIOUS OF AIRCRAFT MOVING ALONG RUNWAY / PARKED AIRCRAFT AT AIRPORT / AIRCRAFT FLYING BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 6, 2026: As jet fuel prices continue to rise rapidly, some airlines in Spain have decided to impose fuel surcharges on tickets, including those that were purchased previously. Intense domestic and international flight activity continued at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport in Barcelona on Wednesday, May 6, amid soaring prices. Several European airlines are reporting increased pressure on their financial results as higher fuel costs, linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, weigh on performance. Jet fuel prices in Europe have risen sharply since last year, as the conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have pushed up oil and natural gas prices. EU refineries normally cover around 70% of the bloc’s jet fuel demand, while the remainder is largely imported from the Middle East and Gulf countries. Several European airlines have already come under pressure from higher fuel costs. Reporting by Lorena Sopena / Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
