Kids, parents Storyline A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippine Islands region on Monday morning, killing 37 people and injuring some 500 people, with General Santos City in the southern Philippines being severely hit, according to the Philippines' Office of Civil Defense on Tuesday. The local government of General Santos City, a port city with a population of over 700,000, said the earthquake had killed 13 people there, with four others still missing. Search and rescue operations are currently underway. A preliminary assessment by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council showed that General Santos City was the hardest-hit city in the earthquake. The Department of Public Works and Highways said the damage to property caused by the quake has reached 1 billion pesos (about 16.2 million U.S. dollars) in General Santos City. According to the local government of General Santos City, at least 66 buildings have been damaged and over 1,800 families affected in the city. The Philippine Coast Guard and the fire department have deployed multiple search-and-rescue dogs to assist in the search. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
