Face masks offered no help," recalled Tian. Tian and other rescuers have dual identities. At home, they respond as the Beijing Fire and Rescue Special Operations Force. Overseas, they become search-and-rescue responders - always among the first to be deployed in emergencies. "It's my 22nd year in the service. Before I joined, I didn't even know what firefighting meant, and I had never seen a fire truck before," said Tian. Chinese firefighters today undergo training across a wide range of skills to respond to the growing frequency of natural disasters.
