The Italian Air Force's aerobatic team, Frecce Tricolori, performed demonstration flights above the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument, leaving trails of green, white, and red smoke across the sky. Helicopters operated by the Italian Air Force, Army, Financial Police and Fire Brigade also took part in the flyover above the capital. The Republic Day marks the 1946 referendum in which Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and establish the republic.
