Sixty-four years after she first arrived in the United States, Mitchell shared the news via Instagram, holding an American flag. She also posted a video of her receiving official documentation, paired with the caption, "A journey that began 62 years ago." Mitchell will hold dual citizenship in the US and Canada, as both countries permit their citizens to hold multiple nationalities. Last spring, Mitchell was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Juno Awards, Canada's premier music awards, which are often dubbed the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys.
