Tours, France - October 06, 2026 Students take part in a demonstration demanding increased funding and improved conditions for public high schools in Tours, France, on October 6, 2026. The protest formed part of a nationwide movement that has spread across France since mid-September, with students blocking school entrances and boycotting classes over teacher shortages, absent staff not being replaced, overcrowded schedules, deteriorating classrooms and school buildings considered poorly adapted to increasingly hot weather. Students, teachers and parents joined demonstrations across the country on October 6 in what became the largest day of action in the movement, with more than 250,000 people taking part nationwide according to official figures. The Tours demonstration also followed an incident in which a 16-year-old student lost sight in one eye after being injured during an earlier school blockade in the city. Prosecutors said medical examinations found the injury was compatible with the impact of a police LBD rubber projectile, while the student's family filed a complaint and France's police oversight body opened an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
