Supporters waved Egyptian flags, wore national team shirts and held photos of the players as they chanted and cheered the squad's return from the tournament. Egypt reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in the country's history before exiting the tournament with a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the round of 16.
