Specialized rescue teams, supported by volunteers, searched through rubble for people who may still be trapped beneath collapsed buildings, while the chances of finding survivors diminished as more time passed. The earthquake struck western Colombia on Aug. 10, with its epicenter near San Jose del Palmar in Choco department, according to the Colombian Geological Service. Tremors were felt across the country and in neighboring nations. The death toll has risen to 281, while 3,971 people were injured and 379 remained missing, EFE reported, citing Colombian authorities. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a state of economic emergency and national disaster as rescue operations were carried out in some of the hardest-hit cities, including Cali, Pereira, Quibdo, Manizales and Armenia.
