Storyline Chinese appetite grows for Norwegian salmon Chinese consumers are developing a growing appetite for chilled salmon from Norway, which is now the country's top source of Atlantic salmon imports. At an international cargo terminal in south China's Shenzhen City, roughly four tons of chilled Norwegian salmon have just arrived by air. After thorough customs inspection and cold chain logistics, the fish will soon hit market shelves across the city, often within just 48 hours of harvest. Chen Xun, salesperson, trade company: "We've already shipped a lot this morning. These freezers are all at minus twenty degrees Celsius." Customs data shows that in the first five months of the year, Shenzhen imported 121 million U.S. dollars worth of chilled salmon, up more than 68 percent year on year. Norway alone supplied over 70 percent of that total. And the numbers are just as impressive nationwide. During the Jan-May period, Chinese imports of Norwegian salmon surpassed 52,000 tons, a surge of 55 percent from a year ago. According to those in the industry, China has now become Norway's second largest salmon export market. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
