The emergency has hit the northern desert regions of Coquimbo and Atacama particularly hard, where flooding cut off access between several towns on Monday, July 20. President Jose Antonio Kast declared a state of catastrophe to facilitate the deployment of the Armed Forces and speed up aid delivery to affected areas.
