Located at an altitude of about 1,200 metres, the lake was formed by glacial movements and has no surface streams feeding into it. Water drains through underground sinkholes, causing the lake's level to fall significantly during the summer months. The historic village of Cuhovici is located near the lake, adding to the landscape surrounding the area.
