Accroding to legends the village was founded by Tofinu people, whom once escaped from slavery and named the village they settled in to hide from slavers “Ganvie” which means “We are free”. Due to their aquatic surroundings, Tofinu people are also referred “Water People of Benin” . The village which has attracted the attention of tourists in recent years offers an unforgettable experience to its visitors with its extraordinary view.
