Before we get started this morning, a quick programming note
0:02
We've got some exciting changes coming to Unbiased Updates. A new anchor joins us next week, and we're getting the studio ready for their debut
0:09
So things may look a little different around here for the next few days, but we'll still have all the news you count on each morning
0:15
For now, here are today's Unbiased Updates. President Trump takes center stage at the RNC convention in Dallas
0:23
with a big promise for voters. I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000
0:35
And the Democrat who made a surprise appearance. Plus, an emergency slide deployed before Trump could take off
0:42
What happened on the new Air Force One and why the president says he wasn't worried
0:47
And a pilot warned they were going too fast for nearly two minutes. Now the widow of a man killed in that Amazon plane crash is suing
0:54
what she says went wrong. The stories that matter, clear and credible
1:01
from across the country to around the world. These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow
1:10
President Trump opened the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas with a $5,000 promise to Americans
1:17
Trump says every adult would get what he calls a dividend, but only if Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate
1:24
in November. He didn't say how the payments would be funded or whether he would ask Congress to
1:29
authorize them. Paying every American adult is estimated to cost more than $1 trillion
1:34
But he did put one other condition on the money. But the only condition on the payment of this
1:40
dividend that we're going to be making, so it's $5,000 to every adult. The only caveat I have is
1:50
that the dividend that we're making must be spent in the United States of America
1:55
We don't want you going to Canada to spend the money
2:06
We don't want you going to China, to Germany. You got to spend the money in the United States of America
2:12
In other words if the Republicans win if you win we might not win Trump also told supporters to vote in November as if he were on the ballot saying quote we running together And one of the night more unexpected appearances came from a Democrat
2:28
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman appeared by video to introduce his Republican Senate
2:32
colleague, Dave McCormick. Vice President J.D. Vance is tonight's keynote speaker, with Trump set to return to close
2:38
out the convention. Well, that trip to Dallas got off to a bit of a rocky start
2:43
Before President Trump could take off from Joint Base Andrews, an emergency slide on the new Air Force One suddenly deployed
2:51
Trump ended up waiting about 20 minutes inside Marine One while Cruz dealt with it
2:56
A person briefed on what happened, told Fox News the slide was triggered accidentally
3:01
Trump described it as a safety check, saying Cruz wanted to make sure the slide works perfectly
3:06
Then came the fairly obvious follow up. Mr. President, do you know why they're checking the slide
3:11
Is there a security concern with the plane? ...before, and they just wanted to make sure, so they've, I guess they've already put it up
3:18
They want to make sure everything works perfectly. President, are you sure this plane is safe to fly
3:23
Yeah, I am. Or I wouldn't be honest. Crews removed the slide, actually hauling it away in the back of a pickup truck
3:29
and Trump took off for Dallas on the plane. The jet is a $400 million Boeing 747 donated by Qatar and recently retrofitted for presidential use
3:39
And it's already been an eventful few months. Back in July, security concerns in Turkey led to an elaborate plane switch. Trump boarded the old Air Force One, then was secretly moved off the plane using a catering truck and flown out on a different military jet. The original Air Force One took off as a decoy
3:58
While President Trump is threatening another strike inside Iran, during the Republican
4:03
midterm convention in Dallas, Trump said the U.S. had detected new activity at Pickaxe
4:08
Mountain, an Iranian nuclear site. We can read it from space. Can you believe this
4:13
Thousands of miles away and we're reading somebody's — we know exactly what's going
4:17
on, but we notice there's a little activity at Pickaxe. I would advise Iran not to get cute because we will have to hit them very hard
4:26
We have no choice, right? We have no choice. The warning comes as the fighting spreads elsewhere in the region
4:31
The Iran Houthi rebels in Yemen say Saudi forces have launched dozens of airstrikes across the country Saudi Arabia has not confirmed the Houthi claim A warthog known as a warthog reportedly lost a wing Those strikes came after U forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday
4:49
And Trump also floated a new name for the Strait of Hormuz, the Trump Strait
4:54
And he again said oil prices will fall once the U.S. wins the war with Iran
4:58
a war he said is, quote, taking place right now. The widow of one of the men killed in the Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport
5:08
has filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming multiple failures led to the crash
5:13
Yaraysi Santizo Morejon's 53-year-old husband, Yuel Rodriguez Naranjo, was driving the cleaning crew van hit by the plane on Sunday
5:22
He was one of five people killed. The lawsuit names a number of defendants, including Amazon, Amazon Air Cargo
5:28
and the two pilots of the Boeing 767. It calls the crash, quote, the foreseeable and preventable result of multiple concurrent failures
5:38
The suit points to alleged pilot error and systemic failure by Amazon and the plane's
5:42
operating company. It also cites the age of the 32-year-old aircraft and notes its braking
5:48
thrust reverser, and spoiler systems are now under NTSB investigation. And a new NTSB report
5:55
reveals what was happening inside the cockpit when pilot repeatedly warned the other for nearly
6:00
two minutes that they were going too fast, both as they approached the runway and after touchdown
6:06
A summary of the cockpit voice recording says the other pilot never gave what investigators
6:10
called a consistent verbal response to those warnings. The cause of the crash remains under
6:15
investigation. Lindsay Clancy's murder trial ended with a hung jury last week. Now her lawyer is
6:21
trying to make sure there isn't another one. Kevin Reddington tells CBS News he'll ask a judge to
6:26
throw out the case on double jeopardy grounds, arguing the mistrial should not have been
6:31
declared. The jury deliberated for more than seven days before the judge declared that mistrial
6:36
The foreperson told the judge one juror had acknowledged having doubt, but refused to apply
6:41
the law on reasonable doubt. Reddington says the judge should have questioned the juror further
6:46
before declaring a mistrial. It would be a motion to dismiss based on what's called double jeopardy
6:52
grounds because there no the term is manifest necessity You have to have a manifest necessity to declare a mistrial for obvious reasons The invested time that the jurors put into it the court the staff the defendant prosecution
7:07
everybody. Reddington will make that argument in court September 29th. It's a long shot motion
7:13
Mistrials generally don't prevent prosecutors from trying a case again. But if he wins
7:18
prosecutors would be barred from trying Clancy for the same charges. And Reddington is also asking President Trump to get involved
7:25
He told ABC News this week that he asked Trump to consider a pardon for Clancy
7:29
even though a president can't pardon state crimes. Reddington knows that. He says what he's hoping is that any message from Trump that works in his favor
7:37
might influence the Republican district attorney. Trump was asked about Clancy last week
7:43
It's a shame. It's a horrible tragedy. It's a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing
7:53
Can't be worse. But you'll find out what the price to pay is
7:57
There'll be a price. It's going to be a mental institution or jail or something
8:01
Reddington says he hasn't heard from the White House. Prosecutors have not yet said whether they'll retry Clancy
8:08
Finally this morning, after nearly 30 years, South Park has a new name
8:13
Or at least that's what Trey Parker and Matt Stone would like you to believe
8:16
the creators posted this new look, with Park, Crossed Out, and America taking its place
8:23
So for now, South Park is South America. It's their answer to President Trump's recent move
8:28
to rename Lake Ontario Lake America in the U.S., a change Apple and Google have both adopted on
8:34
their maps. And Parker and Stone made sure they got a thank you. They wrote, inspired by the
8:39
bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we're changing the name of South Park to South America
8:45
They even worked their own parent company into the joke, thanking Paramount for what they called a Skydance capitulation
8:51
When asked how long the new name will last, Parker and Stone insisted they are, quote
8:55
100% committed to South America. Season 29 premieres September 16th. Unbiased Updates gives you the headlines
