These are your Unbiased Updates from Straight Arrow. A new round of tariffs on American goods has just taken effect in Canada

the latest move in a trade fight that keeps getting more hostile. Canada is now hitting about $20 billion worth of U.S. products with tariffs as high as 50%

They kicked in just after midnight and cover hundreds of products, everything from aluminum foil and cheese to clothing and steel

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says the tariffs are designed to match the latest U.S

levies dollar for dollar. We made the right decision to suspend our trade negotiations with

the United States. We couldn't accept what they'd offered. We wouldn't give what they'd asked

As a result, the U.S. has imposed new tariffs designed to hurt and divide us. Now

that's a miscalculation because Canadians will always take care of each other

President Trump has already threatened to go further. He says tariffs on Canadian-made cars

and auto parts could double to 50% in January. And now he's taking aim at one of Canada's biggest

aerospace companies On Monday Trump threatened to block Bombardier from selling its planes in the United States unless the company builds them in the United States On Truth Social he wrote no more selling Bombardier in the United States Their products

aren't good enough, accusing Canada of blocking American companies from its market. Trump said

if Bombardier wants access to American buyers, they must build here. While Canada has shown no

signs of backing down, the U.S. is Canada's largest trading partner, and Canada is the second biggest

market for American exports. For now, most trade between the two countries is still moving without

these new tariffs, but Trump has repeatedly warned he could continue responding if Canada

follows through. This morning, Canada has. Iran hostilities are putting new pressure on another

major oil producer. More than 70 people are injured after Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked

five cities across Saudi Arabia, hitting oil facilities, an air base, and other civilian and

economic sites. Saudi Arabia says some energy facilities in the south were forced to temporarily

shut down after the attacks caused fires. The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen is now promising

to respond firmly and the Houthis are threatening to go further. Sky News reports a Houthi spokesperson

says the group will soon announce a broad military campaign deep inside Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry is warning of consequences if the Houthis continue targeting

civilians while also calling for an immediate halt to the escalation. It did not say what those

consequences would be. Two people are dead this morning and at least 10 others injured after

Russia resumed attacks on Ukraine overnight. Moscow targeted Kiev and other parts of the

country with drones and missiles. Ukraine's military says it shot down or suppressed two

ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles, and 142 drones. Hits were reported in 29 locations

including residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. The attacks come one day after a pause in Russian strikes during the first official

visit to Ukraine by U.S. Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The two had just met with

Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of renewed U efforts to end the war Witkoff says substantive progress was made during the visit including movement towards scheduling more trilateral talks We learning more this morning about the deadly Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami

International Airport Sunday. The NTSB says all five people who were killed were on the ground

in two vehicles hit by the plane after it overran the runway. One was a van carrying an aircraft

cleaning crew inside the airport. The other was an SUV traveling on a road outside the airport

perimeter. Five other people were injured. Now the flight was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico

with two crew members on board. It was the plane's third flight of the day, after flying from

Cincinnati to Miami, then to San Juan and back to Miami. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy says 32

Two investigators are on site documenting the scene and collecting what she calls perishable evidence

The recovery of victims is most important. The investigation and access to the aircraft as well as evidence can wait

while the recovery operations go forward. That is most important. Reuniting families with their loved ones is most important

Investigators expect to remain on scene for at least a week and are asking the public to send in any photos or videos of the crash

The plane's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have both been recovered and are now being yzed by the NTSB

The NTSB will hold another news conference today at four. Germany's far-right AFD is now just three seats short of a majority in one state

and the question now is whether they can find the support to govern. Alternative for Germany finished first in Saxony-Anhalt Sunday

taking nearly 44% of the vote and 39 of 83 seats in the state parliament

It needs 42 for a majority. So now the focus turns to whether the AFD can find a partner

or enough support from other lawmakers to form a government. If it does Germany could get its first far state government since World War II The result was also a major defeat for Chancellor Friedrich Merz Christian Democratic Union Merz says his party was deeply shocked but that he still plans

to move forward with economic reforms despite their unpopularity. He also reaffirmed Germany's

support for Ukraine and said the country's institutions remain stable. The AFD campaigns

for tougher immigration policies and takes a more Russia-friendly approach than Germany's

mainstream parties. Germany's Domestic Intelligence Agency has classified the party's Saxony-Anhalt branch as right-wing extremist. Germany's major parties have spent years refusing

to govern with the AFD. Finally this morning, President Trump spent part of his holiday weekend

pushing a new name for New Mexico. He wants to call it New America. After posting this image on

Sunday, Trump then wrote on Truth Social Monday that, quote, many people had suggested the change

and called New Mexico, quote, one of the great vote cheating states of all time

And he didn't leave it there. Trump posted this AI video showing him covering up New Mexico on

a welcome sign with New America. By Monday, he was posting more maps with the new name

New Mexico's Democratic governor quickly pushed back on X. Michelle Lujan Grisham wrote

New Mexico's name isn't up for debate. It's been hours since before the United States existed

While the president tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran

the price of gas and everything else keeps rising. There is a big difference between this and Trump's other renaming efforts

New Mexico's name is literally written into the state constitution. He doesn't have the authority to legally change it on his own

Trump has used executive orders to change the federal names of the Gulf of Mexico and

most recently, Lake Ontario. But those are geographic features. changing the legal name of a state would likely require action in New Mexico and in Congress
