We think of our beds as a safe place to rest, but a new study out of the University of Toronto is raising awareness on something most parents probably aren't even thinking about, the invisible chemicals hiding in some children's mattresses and bedding
0:14
Researchers studied the sleeping environments of 25 children in Ontario, ranging from six months to four years old
0:22
They found elevated chemicals, including flame retardants and UV filters with the highest concentrations near the bed
0:30
The likely sources are mattresses and bedding materials. Notably, many of these chemicals aren't required to meet flammability standards in either Canada or the U.S.

but high exposure could lead to health issues long-term. A research director of a nonprofit dedicated to reducing babies' exposures to chemicals tells CNN
0:49
they found that even something as simple as a child's body heat and weight on a mattress
0:54
can increase the release of toxic chemicals into the air they breathe while sleeping
0:59
a factor that current safety standards don't consider. To reduce potential exposure
1:04
researchers recommend getting rid of excessive items on and around the bed
1:09
such as pillows and toys. Regularly washing pajamas and bedding can also help act as a protective barrier
1:15
and prevent chemical buildup over time. There are also sites that rank healthier bedding choices
1:21
Earlier this year, Consumer Reports partnered with a company to test materials in 12 crib mattresses for chemical emissions
1:28
To be considered a top choice or good choice, the mattresses had to avoid flame retardants and adhesives and use waterproofing materials with lower health and environmental risks
1:39
While the University of Toronto study didn't name specific mattress brands, researchers say the products tested were commonly available
