French president, first lady sue Candace Owens over ‘campaign of defamation’

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte are taking a conservative American

political commentator to court over what they call a campaign of defamation

The Macrons filed a defamation lawsuit in Delaware against Candace Owens, known for her bold style and large following online. At the center of the cases

Owens repeated claims that Brigitte Macron is a transgender woman. The Macrons call that false

and say Owens is using the claims to not only mislead, but to humiliate and generate attention

for herself. In a statement, the couple said they gave Owens multiple chances to retract her

comments, but she refused. We received a second strongly worded letter from the Elysee Palace

from Brigitte and Emmanuel Macron. This time it's a very brief letter. The lawsuit contains

22 counts, including defamation, false light, and defamation by implication. According to the

219 page filing Owens didn just make one post She used the claims to build a whole content strategy that includes an eight part podcast series called Becoming Brigitte social media posts and a revamped website A year ago when I said that I would stake my entire professional

career on the fact that Brigitte Macron, the current first lady of France, was born a man

The lawsuit says Owens repeated lies claiming the Macron's are blood relatives involved in fraud and

linked to CIA mind control programs. After leaving the Daily Wire, Owens grew her personal brand and

audience and, according to the lawsuit, used that platform to push conspiracy claims for profit

Owens hasn't yet spoken publicly about the lawsuit, but in January, when speaking about

the possibility of being sued, she said her information is fact-based, not fueled by lies

But as I said, their lawyers made a critical mistake because in order to prove defamation

you have to prove that somebody acted in reckless disregard for the truth, that they knew the truth

and they made a decision not to publicize it. Instead, they wanted to just publicize lies
