It was a balmy April day in Vietnam and Hồ Khanh had taken some time to explore the jungles near his home. He was surrounded by the sounds of bird calls and buzzing insects but he overhead something unusual over the din of the jungle, the sound of wind whistling through something.
What Hồ Khanh was about to discover, was perhaps the most significant geographic discovery of the past 50 years….

0:09
in the heart of the steaming vietnam
0:13
jungle nestled in between mountains lies
0:15
a cavern sun doom cave which is located
0:18
in Quang Ninh Province Vietnam is not
0:20
your average cave it's a place where
0:22
primeval relics from historic times lurk
0:25
behind every corner if one makes their
0:29
way through Quang Binh jungle traversing
0:31
past the dense foliage the crushing heat
0:33
the choking humidity they chew can find
0:36
this ancient cave many would say that
0:38
the journey is worth it and indeed these
0:40
pictures would certainly describe
0:42
something that is both immense and
0:43
unique in the world
0:47
the name song doon translates to
0:49
Mountain River Cave and it's named thus
0:52
because of the ancient river that wound
0:54
its way through the limestone underneath
0:56
the mountain over the course of two to
0:58
five million years yet some dunes ages
1:01
not nearly the most remarkable thing
1:02
about it Sun doom cave is the biggest
1:06
cave in the world it's over five and a
1:08
half miles long meaning that you could
1:10
easily fit a 40 story skyscraper inside
1:13
it it also has a river flowing inside of
1:15
it and even a fully fledged jungle of
1:17
course the cave was relatively unknown
1:19
to the world up until about 26 years ago
1:24
Sun doen cave was only discovered in
1:26
1991 when a local man by the name of
1:29
Koch Khan who was traversing the jungle
1:31
happened to hear some rushing water
1:33
coming from an events camera before him
1:35
when he tried to investigate further he
1:38
found the entrance was far too steep to
1:40
safely after alone still the whistling
1:44
sound of wind and the roar of rushing
1:45
water in the cave was enough to entice
1:48
him when he returned home he told people
1:50
of the cave he'd seen and in no time at
1:52
all
1:52
local people began coming to Sun doom to
1:55
investigate for themselves
1:57
it wasn't until 18 years later however
1:59
that the world at large learned of the
2:02
cave it wasn't until April of 2009 that
2:07
the cave became internationally known a
2:09
group of cave explorers from the British
2:10
cave Research Association led by Howard
2:13
Limbert decided to conduct a survey in
2:15
the area they were among the first
2:17
individuals to enter the cave properly
2:18
and what they discovered was startling
2:22
of course their progress through Sun
2:24
doen was eventually stopped by a large
2:26
200 foot high wall made of calcite which
2:29
they named the Great Wall of Vietnam a
2:31
year later in 2010 another group
2:34
traversed past it and finally reached
2:36
the end of the cave
2:38
anyone who stays in the cave for an
2:40
extended period of time on one of the
2:42
many tours available these days will
2:44
spend the first night camping next to
2:46
one of sun dunes greatest sights the
2:48
hand of dog this enormous stalactite is
2:51
named as such because the resemblance
2:53
pairs to a dog's paws parts of sun dunes
2:56
roof seems to have collapsed some time
2:58
ago centuries in fact in the time in
3:00
beneath it appears that a lush jungle
3:02
has taken brew complete with all manner
3:04
of creatures including monkeys and
3:06
flying foxes but this Garden of Eden
3:08
isn't the only amazing life that is
3:10
blossomed in the humongous cave anxious
3:14
Poloncarz who explore the cave can find
3:16
huge fields of algae that have risen
3:18
from the dozens of ancient pools and Sun
3:19
doen these green fields of algae seem to
3:22
blanket the cave floor creating a
3:24
beautiful but slippery carpet for
3:26
explorers to traverse on their way
3:28
deeper into the cave some dome also
3:31
contains a king's ransom in rare
3:33
geometric features known as cave pearls
3:35
the pearls are formed over hundreds of
3:37
years by the slow dripping of water
3:39
which then dries up and leaves layers of
3:42
spherical calcite crystals and sun doom
3:44
has many more amazing features for the
3:47
brave an affluent Explorer
3:50
in the places where the limestone was
3:51
weakest the ceiling is collapsed these
3:54
natural skylights create amazing
3:55
patterns of foliage and are responsible
3:58
for providing sustenance to the hundreds
4:00
of plants that have made their home in
4:02
this forbidding place over the past
4:04
several decades scientists have
4:06
discovered never-before-seen plant
4:08
species that have seemed to thrive
4:10
around sun dunes waterfalls and along
4:12
the banks of the huge and winding river
4:14
that winds its way through the immense
4:16
maze of caverns sundews main cave
4:20
passage is the largest known cave
4:21
passage in the world by volume measuring
4:24
an enormous 38.4 by a hundred and six
4:27
cubic meters it's more than 3.1 miles
4:30
long 660 feet high and 490 feet wide the
4:36
cave itself runs for approximately 5.6
4:38
miles and contains two large domains or
4:40
areas where the ceiling of the cave is
4:42
collapsed to allow sunlight to - the
4:44
formerly deep dark hole the best part
4:46
about Sun doen is that it is now open to
4:49
the public and people those with enough
4:51
money anyway can come and explore it
4:52
whenever they like Sun Dome has recently
4:55
been touted as the largest cave in the
4:57
world though some others are slightly
4:59
longer or deeper Mammoth Cave in
5:01
Brownsville Kentucky is the longest cave
5:03
at about 400 miles and crab era cave in
5:06
Georgia is the deepest still the novelty
5:09
of Sun doen has made it a popular
5:10
tourist attraction
5:12
but Salus a tour company based out of
5:15
Vietnam has been running trial tours of
5:16
the cave for several years now those
5:19
lucky few who have entered and explored
5:20
some doom so far like photographer John
5:23
spies for example have emerged with some
5:25
of the most incredible photos John spies
5:28
is a professional photographer based out
5:30
of mae hong son province thailand there
5:33
he runs cape lodge a mountain guesthouse
5:35
that gives would be spelunkers a place
5:37
to stay before they head out for their
5:39
cave trips those who explore Sun doom
5:41
rappel over 80 metres down into the cave
5:45
today plans are being considered to
5:47
build a cable car that will run through
5:49
the cave the track would be over six and
5:51
a half miles long and would cost an
5:53
astonishing 200 million dollars to build
5:56
environmentalists are obviously opposed
5:58
to disturbing the delicate
