A Man Went Out With Friends And Discovered Something Hidden Away For Over 1,000 Years
It was September of 2014 when metal detecting enthusiast Derek McLennan journeyed to a field owned by The Church of Scotland with his two friends. A year prior, he had found a trove of medieval coins near Twynholm, and he was hoping to stumble across something just as significant that day.
After talking himself into going on the trip after feeling unwell that morning, McLennan was shocked when his detector started beeping. Little did he know, he was about to unearth something that’d been hidden for over 1,000 years.

airshare in the southwestern part of
0:42
scotland is a businessman who's become
0:44
an avid metal detector enthusiast
0:47
he was out in the country with two
0:48
friends when something amazing happened
0:51
it was like any other day in the field
0:53
until mclennan's metal detector began to
0:55
beep
0:56
ironically mclennan woke up that
0:58
september morning in 2014 feeling a bit
1:01
under the weather
1:03
because of this he was very close to
1:05
calling off the little metal detecting
1:06
expedition with his two friends but he
1:08
felt guilty as he had already promised
1:11
his two friends
1:12
it's not overly surprising that mclennan
1:14
got out of bed that morning as he
1:16
already had a pretty solid track record
1:18
of finding treasure
1:20
in 2013 along with his friend gus
1:22
patterson mclennan uncovered a trove of
1:25
300 medieval silver coins
1:28
so mclennan got himself ready and the
1:30
three men set off to their destination
1:33
once there the three friends began to
1:35
quarter out the land deciding where they
1:37
were going to search for treasure
1:39
it wasn't too long after they arrived
1:41
that mclennan's metal detector began
1:43
beeping he found something he began to
1:46
dig
1:46
to his surprise mclennan unearthed what
1:49
looked like an old silver spoon
1:52
in his mind it wasn't anything to get
1:54
overly excited about that is until he
1:57
looked at the object more closely
1:59
i turned it over and wiped my thumb
2:01
across it and i saw the sawtire type of
2:04
design and knew instantly it was viking
2:07
obviously things were starting to get
2:09
interesting for the treasure hunters the
2:11
treasure hunter's emotions went from sad
2:13
to elated in no time at all
2:16
once mclennan realized what the object
2:18
was he called his friends over to take a
2:20
look
2:21
obviously he couldn't keep his discovery
2:23
to himself for very long
2:26
mclennan had actually stumbled upon a
2:28
trove of viking relics objects that have
2:30
been lost and buried for over 1 000
2:33
years
2:34
with the number of items he pulled from
2:35
the earth it might be the largest find
2:37
ever
2:38
among the relics were gold and silver
2:40
ingots armbands and brooches
2:44
but there was one object in particular
2:46
that caught the attention of mclennan
2:48
and his two friends among the treasures
2:50
was an early medieval christian cross
2:53
there was still one more thing they had
2:55
to do and that was to call the scottish
2:57
treasure trove unit to report their
2:59
findings
3:01
the unit went through great lengths to
3:02
make sure the treasure was guarded
3:04
around the clock
3:05
the head of the national museum of
3:07
scotland's treasure trove unit stuart
3:09
campbell discussed the importance of the
3:11
fun with bbc
3:13
the artifacts mclennan dug up were truly
3:16
amazing and before long a huge
3:18
archaeological dig was happening in the
3:20
field
3:21
to think he might have only scratched
3:23
the surface on what was there
3:25
as it turned out there were distinct
3:26
layers of objects in the ground
3:29
such as a gold pin in the shape of a
3:30
bird all in all there were 100 artifacts
3:34
aside from the arm rings pins and other
3:36
various jewelry the excavation crew was
3:39
very intrigued by one particular item
3:42
among the lower layer artifacts was a
3:44
large silver alloy pot with a matching
3:46
lid
3:47
the pot was wrapped in old and decaying
3:49
fabric but was still intact
3:51
the researchers suspected the pot was
3:53
already at least one century old when it
3:56
was buried in the 9th or 10th century
3:59
now it was just a matter of figuring out
4:01
what was inside the old pot before
4:04
opening the lid though the
4:05
archaeologists opted to do an x-ray of
4:07
the item
4:08
just in case there was something inside
4:10
that could harm them in some way
4:12
the thing is what the x-ray revealed
4:15
ended up being beyond the excavation
4:17
crew's wildest dreams and no
4:20
it wasn't just another pin shaped like a
4:22
bird
4:23
inside the pot wasn't an ancient curse
4:25
or anything that was going to hurt
4:27
mclennan or the rest of the team
4:30
in fact there were at least 20 more
4:32
artifacts enclosed inside the old pot
4:35
it took a while to examine record and
4:37
clean all of the findings
4:40
so it wasn't until years later that the
4:42
artifacts were actually shared with the
4:44
general public but let us tell you it
4:46
was worth the wait
4:48
among the 20 artifacts that were shown
4:50
to the public were byzantine silk a gold
4:52
ingot and six silver anglo-saxon
4:55
brooches
4:56
the former was very impressive because
4:58
that type of soap dates back to the 4th
5:00
century and constantinople
5:03
with such rare findings it begs one
5:05
large question how much are the viking
5:08
artifacts worth today after valuing all
5:11
of the artifacts what is now known as
5:13
the galloway horde has an estimated
5:15
value between six hundred and thirty
5:18
thousand dollars and one point two
5:20
million dollars
5:21
not too bad for a man who had to talk
5:23
himself into getting out of bed that
5:25
fateful morning
5:27
but now it begs the question
5:29
why did the vikings leave the artifacts
5:31
in the ground and never return for them
5:34
unfortunately those questions are most
5:36
likely going to remain unanswered at
5:38
least one day people will be able to
5:40
appreciate the history in a museum as it
5:43
plays a large part in understanding
5:45
viking interactions with scotland all we
5:47
know in a viking specialist said this
5:50
ward will add hugely to our
5:52
understanding of viking movements around
5:54
the landscape their interactions with
5:56
other people and their craftsmanship
5:59
for now people can only assume that
6:01
whoever laid the artifacts in the ground
6:03
had a very good reason for doing so
6:06
according to mclennan there is an old
6:08
legend in galloway that speaks of a
6:10
battle between the scots and vikings
6:12
in the end the scots triumphed over the
6:14
vikings
6:16
so perhaps the treasure is that of a
6:17
viking warlord not wanting the prized
6:20
artifacts to fall into enemy hands today
6:22
the galloway horde has found a permanent
6:24
home at the national museum of scotland
6:27
after the museum raised over two million
6:29
dollars worth of funds to acquire the
6:31
relics
