today I'm answering the question what is
0:04
a zone defense and I'm going to do this
0:06
by really just going over some of the
0:08
common Zone defenses and just describe
0:12
what happens during a zone defense or
0:15
what makes up a zone defense just to
0:17
give you a better idea um what I have on
0:19
the board here is probably the most
0:21
basic zone defense which is called The
0:24
two3 Zone and just for your edification
0:28
and so you know
0:30
um how Zone defenses are labeled is
0:34
they're they're always labeled by
0:36
numbers so um so whatever is on the top
0:41
the top numbers the number of people on
0:44
the top would be the first part of the
0:46
the name of the zone so in this case
0:48
there's two Defenders up top so it would
0:50
be a two and there's three Defenders
0:52
down low so it' be a two3 Zone if this
0:55
was a 32 Zone you would have three
1:00
Defenders up top with two def uh with
1:03
two Defenders down low um if this was a
1:06
you know a 212 it would be two Defenders
1:09
up top one defender in the middle two
1:11
down below if this was a um let's say a
1:20
131 you would have one up top three in
1:23
the middle one down below so I'm
1:25
breaking this down by first starting off
1:27
with the 2 three Zone
1:31
but before I do do me a
1:33
favor uh subscribe to the channel if you
1:36
look if you like content like this I try
1:38
to make uh a lot of videos about how to
1:41
coach basketball teams all youth
1:43
basketball teams a lot about travel
1:46
basketball so do me that favor and hit
1:48
the Subscribe button that'll really help
1:49
me out so here we go the two3 Zone um
1:53
really easy to teach for your players
1:55
there are some weaknesses in the two3
1:58
zone and that would be you know up here
2:01
in your wings um obviously it's you know
2:05
it's possible to cover it but you know
2:07
they definitely have that also have the
2:10
high post which be uh can become
2:12
vulnerable and with any zone defense is
2:17
um you're going to have you know your
2:19
vulnerabilities are going to be when you
2:21
know the
2:22
offense swings or reverses the
2:25
basketball to the other Corner because
2:27
everybody does in fact move in Zone to
2:30
wherever the basketball is so
2:34
um and that's kind of the idea of a zone
2:36
right like they're covering down on
2:37
their zones so when the basketball's in
2:40
the corner on a two3 Zone um or any Zone
2:43
all the players are going to
2:44
be locked up on that side and if the
2:48
ball gets reversed which can happen very
2:51
quickly in basketball you are going to
2:54
see everybody move and that's how um
2:57
Zone defenses are broken
3:00
down
3:02
um but they can be but they can um be
3:05
very helpful in you know stopping a good
3:07
team that drives in a lot that that's uh
3:10
one of the main reasons why teams will
3:13
use the two uh the zone defense so
3:16
breaking down now that we've went over
3:18
the two3 Zone I want to jump into the um
3:23
the 32 Zone and just talk briefly about
3:26
that so the 3-2 Zone as I mentioned
3:30
before is three offensive players up top
3:33
and your two bigs down
3:35
below um in most of these Zone defenses
3:39
you're going to put your big players
3:40
down below to protect the rim um with an
3:43
exception on a few but um for the 32
3:46
Zone you're you know you're keeping
3:47
those bigs down here you can change it
3:49
obviously but where your uh where your
3:54
gaps are or where your weaknesses are
3:56
your vulnerabilities for a 3-2 Zone if
3:59
you have already figured it it's going
4:01
to be in your Corners so as you can see
4:05
nobody's in the corner so how do you
4:07
cover down on that well just like in a
4:10
two three Zone you know the the the the
4:13
person down below is going to cover down
4:16
on
4:18
that and everyone's going to
4:23
shift shift down so um you still have
4:27
the same vulnerability in the 32 Zone
4:30
that you have in the in the two three
4:32
Zone which is a quick you know ball
4:41
reversal
4:42
[Music]
4:43
can shift your defense so as you can see
4:48
they're moving that ball quickly
4:50
everybody is
4:57
rotating very easily now that we've went
5:01
over the 3-2 Zone and before I jump into
5:03
the next one um do me a favor go down in
5:07
the comment section and tell me which
5:09
one of these Zone
5:11
defenses you would like to see a video
5:15
on and I can break this down uh for you
5:19
um you know the one that we get the most
5:21
I'll break it down and we'll be able to
5:24
cover on that zone defense so which one
5:27
do you want to hear about all right then
5:29
next one I'm going to go over is the 131
5:32
Zone this one's a little bit more
5:33
complicated I really enjoy running this
5:36
with teams that practice it a lot um but
5:39
essentially you know it's the same thing
5:47
it's it's you know it's set up with one
5:49
Defender up top three Defenders here in
5:53
the middle and then one Defender down
5:55
low Now can anyone take a guess where
5:58
the uh the weaknesses are are that's
6:01
right it's in the corners and I mean
6:04
there are ways to to break up this zone
6:08
defense really well if you've got an
6:10
experienced team I mean where you're you
6:12
know scoring right here in the paint um
6:14
but this this um this defense can be
6:18
very effective if your team practices a
6:21
lot and um just puts a lot of time and
6:25
energy into I mean this can be very very
6:27
uh active defense and I and I'll briefly
6:30
kind of go over it with you I mean it it
6:32
can be um almost a full court press on
6:35
this thing and and just real fast I mean
6:38
like the where you put your people is is
6:41
super important on this and I'll go over
6:43
it you know in in like 5 seconds or less
6:45
but you basically have you know a
6:47
basketball player who's going to be able
6:49
to run up and down the court with the
6:50
the offense and keep them on the side
6:53
you want the uh the ball always on the
6:57
side one of the sides for this defense
7:01
um and you want to use the entire team
7:02
to make that happen and then you want to
7:04
have your probably your quickest most
7:07
athletic player here and this player is
7:10
really running sideline to sideline so
7:12
when that ball gets in the corner like
7:14
this guy's got to be able to get there
7:16
and then they got to be able to get back
7:17
if it gets reversed and you really you
7:20
know with any zone defense or really
7:22
with man you just you you don't want the
7:24
ball you want to keep the ball on one
7:26
side of the court right like you don't
7:28
want the ball going the other side you
7:30
want it you know one side get it down to
7:33
the Trap area um but so with the
7:36
131 um you know this player is keeping
7:39
the ball on one side of the
7:42
court and then you can set up
7:46
traps with everybody
7:49
obviously um relocating to wherever
7:51
they're supposed to be and you know so
7:55
you're looking to set traps or you're
7:57
looking to get the ball into the corner
8:00
so that you can effectively
8:07
trap this can be a very effective
8:09
defense and you can do it a couple
8:11
different ways as with the 23 the 32 and
8:15
the
8:16
131 um these are the three zones that I
8:18
wanted to use today to give you an
8:20
example of what is a what is a zone
8:23
defense um I'm looking forward to
8:25
reading your comments below which one I
8:27
should break down step by step on
8:30
um there are other things that I could
8:32
have mentioned in this video um such as
8:35
like you know the different different
8:38
settings you can do on your on your zone
8:39
defense extending it out um you know
8:43
running it more half cour press but uh
8:46
but I wanted to make sure that folks
8:48
knew what a Zone a zone defense was and
8:50
this is really what a zone defense is so
8:53
looking forward to the next video
