hey coaches are you uh having a hard
0:03
time stopping other teams from driving
0:06
in and making easy layups against your
0:09
squad um are you struggling to protect
0:12
the paint if you are I'm going to show
0:14
you a simple Zone most of you may
0:16
already know about it but it's it's a
0:18
two3 Zone you should consider
0:21
implementing this into your into your
0:23
defensive strategy especially if you're
0:25
giving up easy buckets um I'm going to
0:28
quickly go over just kind of the setup
0:30
of it and kind of how it works and then
0:33
you can decide if it would work for your
0:34
team um but I think uh it will it should
0:38
be able to address any issues that you
0:40
have with teams um penetrating the paint
0:43
real easy on you now I will throw a
0:45
caveat into this if they're making easy
0:48
buckets on you because it's a fast break
0:50
then that the two3 zone is is probably
0:52
just not the right
0:54
solution um but if it's you know you're
0:57
playing a man defense and and uh and and
1:00
they're you know just driving in and
1:01
beating the players you might need to uh
1:03
use the zone defense which is a great
1:06
defense uh to quickly you know get your
1:09
team set up to par on on uh using a zone
1:13
right um you know it's it's essentially
1:18
a defense that if you do it right and
1:20
you implement it closer to the basket
1:22
you know as you can see I have all the
1:24
exes set up here you know you're you're
1:26
covering down that paint now obviously
1:28
there's some weak areas and you're going
1:29
to have to worry about perimeter shots
1:30
and I'll talk about that here in a
1:31
little bit but the uh two3 Zone if if
1:34
you're getting beat on if if their
1:36
team's driving on you you need to switch
1:37
a two3 Zone this is what it looks like
1:39
this is this is why you would do it so
1:42
if the if if nothing else today I just
1:45
want you to know that if you're out
1:47
there in a tournament you're a new team
1:48
and you're getting beat by easy layups
1:52
just just think okay easy layups I'm
1:54
going to a two three Zone get your team
1:57
set up it's a really easy uh defense to
1:59
learn they probably already know it if
2:00
they've been playing wreck um but here's
2:02
how it works so um when I'm getting beat
2:07
in the paint and I switch to a two3 Zone
2:09
I actually uh I have my players not
2:12
extend out past that three-point line so
2:15
I tell my players like Hey we're playing
2:17
behind the line and they know I'm that
2:19
they're not going behind the three-point
2:20
line and that just it makes it easier
2:23
for your team to keep the other team
2:25
from driving in because what happens is
2:28
they'll pop out they'll get beat and now
2:31
they're still scoring in the paint um
2:33
but essentially that's uh that's how I
2:36
do that now you can play two three Zone
2:39
extended um but it you know it's not the
2:41
most effective against protecting the
2:43
paint so essentially what you have is
2:47
you know and I do have my players come
2:49
out to the paint my two guards I do have
2:51
them come out to the paint and I do you
2:54
know bring this guy up a little bit and
2:55
I do have you know I I do have these
2:58
guys come up and I just have them walk
2:59
watch you know the back door to make
3:02
sure that that you know no one's popping
3:04
in back there and I know that looks more
3:05
like a 212 but this is really just you
3:08
know putting my big player up here just
3:11
just in a in a in a way to um assist the
3:14
two guards if somebody gets back because
3:16
remember I don't want them to score in
3:18
the paint so I'm that's that's my focus
3:21
here that's what that's what I'm focused
3:22
on on on you know when I'm setting up
3:25
this type of zone for this type of you
3:28
know offensive threat so
3:30
um you know so if someone tries to drive
3:34
in I'm having my you know two
3:39
guards stop them right and you know
3:41
normally what they're going to do is
3:42
they're going to pass out and and I and
3:45
I mentioned this earlier in the video
3:46
you're going to have to um you know
3:50
you're going to have you're going to
3:51
lose your defensive perter uh you know
3:54
defense against perimeter shots you you
3:56
know your team can still effectively you
3:59
know close out and you know put some
4:01
coverage on them but if it's a good
4:03
three-point shooting team you know
4:07
you're going to have some problems with
4:08
this uh but if they close out
4:10
effectively without fouling you'll still
4:12
be able to cause some stress for them so
4:17
um so just just to kind of work this
4:20
thing around like how it looks you know
4:22
if the ball gets passed down here to the
4:24
corner you got a corner shot um you know
4:27
this guy should pop out close out the uh
4:31
middle guy the the five or the center
4:33
should should you know come over here to
4:35
about here and this guy should be a
4:37
little bit more in the paint here
4:39
because you don't want them to to work
4:40
the ball in you also want to have your
4:43
guard pop out over here and then your
4:44
other guard come over here um if you're
4:47
a quick team and you practice a lot you
4:49
can do some trapping over here um I
4:52
recommend it but if you're a new team
4:53
and you're still just trying to figure
4:55
this out and you're really just trying
4:56
to keep them from scoring in the
4:57
perimeter or in the uh in the paint
5:00
you know maybe maybe op press isn't the
5:02
most effective way um but I really
5:05
really like the TR I'm sorry not OP
5:07
press but a trap I really like the idea
5:10
of trying to trap in Corners um
5:12
especially if you're a younger team and
5:13
you're going to use the zone you might
5:15
as well take advantage of it and trap in
5:16
the corner um that can get a little
5:19
sticky sometimes because if you do a
5:22
trap here effectively in the corner and
5:24
this person's a little bit taller or a
5:26
little bit more seasoned and they you
5:28
know they get that ball
5:30
here um you know now you've got you know
5:34
you still you still have an effective
5:35
defensive situation where you can you
5:38
know pop this guy down a little bit here
5:41
and have this guy come out um but this
5:44
guy has to know to move over because you
5:45
do leave some openings and then
5:47
obviously you leave some openings here
5:48
too so um that this guy's going to have
5:51
to cover so just be cognizant of that um
5:54
but you know if you're if you're trying
5:57
to figure out how to address the problem
5:59
of I keep getting scored on in the
6:02
paint you know they're just driving in
6:04
and they're destroying my man defense
6:07
switch to the two3 Zone because you can
6:10
protect
6:12
it if you're just trying to
6:15
protect the uh the the um the
6:19
paint you can instruct your players not
6:23
to gamble and not to uh not to not to
6:27
not to overextend on their deep defense
6:29
right if the ball goes here and you
6:31
really don't think that team can shoot
6:32
threes you know just put a guy on them
6:35
but let him know that you know he can
6:37
pop out um as long as they adjust over
6:39
you're still running the man
6:41
appropriately right and then they can
6:43
move one thing that I always um try to
6:47
articulate to my players is pretend like
6:50
you're on a string when you're you know
6:52
attached to the player that is next to
6:54
you because um every you know once one
6:58
person moves or once that basketball
6:59
moves everybody moves right you see and
7:03
you can see that here too right like the
7:05
basketball let's say it was up here they
7:07
got passed down here
7:10
everybody moved to a different spot in
7:13
their
7:14
Zone and the same thing would happen if
7:17
this ball was
7:21
reversed down to this
7:24
corner same thing's going to happen
7:27
right everyone's going to adjust this
7:29
player will now go
7:33
here this player will take that spot
7:36
this player will come up I I don't like
7:38
to bring him too far up but come up to
7:39
about there this player comes down here
7:42
there's a trapping opportunity again
7:44
very important in a two three Zone and
7:47
then the uh other player comes here and
7:50
we're we're focused solely on this zone
7:54
I'm sorry the the paint we don't want
7:56
anyone to score in the paint um now
7:58
there are some other ways to run the two
7:59
three Zone you can run an extended you
8:01
can run a half court press um but
8:03
today's video I just wanted to help the
8:05
coaches that are having that are you
8:08
know in the middle of a game and they're
8:09
like man I'm you know my man my man
8:12
defense is just getting torn to pieces
8:15
and they're just driving in and and
8:16
scoring layups um this will fix that
8:20
getting them back getting them set up
8:22
into a two3 Zone behind the line two3
8:25
Zone you can really protect that paint
8:27
I've played against teams that can't
8:29
shoot through
8:31
and the way that I would do my zone
8:34
defense but like if they were just like
8:35
a super aggressive athletic team and and
8:38
like their you know their strength is
8:41
just driving in and scoring layups on
8:43
teams um I you know and this is this is
8:47
kind of rare right like I don't think
8:48
you're going to run into too you're
8:50
going to run into teams like this but
8:52
you know that have no shooters but what
8:54
you know I I just tell them like you
8:56
know what like don't come very far off
8:58
of this line and just just just pack it
8:59
in don't let him touch it don't let them
9:02
touch this paint and then what will
9:05
happen is the other coach will rotate
9:08
his quick players out and he'll put
9:10
Shooters in and then you know once you
9:12
start seeing them just take advantage of
9:14
three-point shots you know go back to
9:16
your man defense or or change it you
9:18
know um but yet but so you know today's
9:22
video was solely about protecting the
9:24
paint what do you need to do and we got
9:26
to have strategies as coaches and this
9:28
is the strategy that I think you should
9:30
consider using when you have a team that
9:34
is just driving in if you just want to
9:36
protect the paint it's simple just
9:38
protect the paint use the two three Zone
9:41
and protect the paint simple as can be I
9:45
hope that you guys enjoyed this video if
9:47
you did if you find this uh this this
9:49
content useful um please like the video
9:53
please subscribe to the video um if you
9:56
have uh comments on ways that this was
9:58
effective for you in a game um or if you
10:01
just have something that you want to add
10:02
to the video for the other viewers
10:04
please feel free to comment that down in
10:07
the uh in the comment section below
