Hey, what's going on, everybody
0:03
Welcome in to another edition of the Third Line John Fires postgame show
0:08
Tonight, the Philadelphia Flyers lose a game that could have been in the wraps alongside
0:13
Joey and Pavel on this very important night. I am James Scorza with you, filling in for Papa Nord on this very important Sunday night
0:20
But guys, Flyers get a point out of it in this game that looked like that could have
0:26
gone either way, but somehow, someway, Toronto got the victory and won the game for the Maple Leafs in overtime
0:34
Yeah, absolutely. Sorry again. Yeah, absolutely. This was an important point. You wish you could have gotten two
0:43
I thought Mitch Kopp would do it again in his overtime magic
0:47
but it wasn't to be. Yeah, I mean, Toronto has those – the offense they have
0:54
three-on-three. I know you go with Connect Me and all on three-on-three, but with those three
1:00
I mean, you know, but the way we play against Toronto, I mean, we got to feel somewhat impressed
1:06
I guess, hanging with a team that's continually in the playoffs every year, even though
1:12
they don't go anywhere in the playoffs. But I'm impressed. Fedotov was shaky
1:18
in the first period, I thought. But he hasn't played in, what, 13 games, I said
1:23
Right. Right. But he came on strong in the second, the third, which is, you know, you know, we definitely need some more solid goaltending
1:30
And that was good to see, even though we lost, but we got the point
1:34
So, yeah, that's the thing I took out of it, too. And also getting a point against Toronto and it will be the first of a back to back
1:42
So they'll be back here on Tuesday night against the Maple Leafs once again for this game here tonight
1:48
So let's get into the round. Let's get to what happened in this game tonight
1:53
As it began in the first period for the Flyers and saying to tell him once again
1:58
was Tyson Forrester to get the first goal of the game to make it 1-0 for the good guys
2:03
Yeah, absolutely. And Tyson Forrester getting back on the board. First goal early in the first
2:11
This looked like a repeat of the Vegas game. And I was kind of, I'm pleasantly surprised by Tyson Forrester's coming on
2:20
I'm also pleasantly surprised with that line as a whole and the kind of quality stats and quality production that they're giving us
2:32
especially considering you're just trying to look for stars that aren't your perennial stars
2:41
like the TKs and Couturiers and Mitchcoffs and Tippetts. You expect that, but out of the Nolan Cates and Forrester line
2:53
you wouldn't necessarily expect it, but it's a nice bright spot to have
2:58
Yeah, definitely. And also, too, I thought Lawton's actually been pouring on the points this year
3:03
I know in the last year there was a question mark whether he'll be returned or even he traded at the trade deadline
3:08
And then, you know, he's been scoring like the four-goal game and then he got a goal again tonight
3:13
He's piling on the points, too, so that's good to see, too. A guy that's usually, what, third-liner for the most part
3:19
And he's been producing as well, too. Yeah, absolutely. And I think go with Toyssa Forrest to be a Red Hot
3:25
But it's kind of weird, though, because there's a lot of players on this team
3:29
that there's either Noah Cates gets hot or Orman Tippett or even Mitch Gav getting hot once in a while
3:35
So it's a good tone setter for the beginning parts of the game, too
3:42
Yeah, for sure. And it wouldn't take very long for the Toronto Maple Leafs
3:49
the talented team that they are, and the talented players that they have to respond to that first goal 38 seconds later
3:58
Yeah, that's the thing that I took out of it too. Like I said, the Flyers outshot the – basically this was something that I said too
4:06
But yeah, coming back and scoring the game that that quickly was a
4:10
I guess you could say it was something that the Flyers have to do better on
4:14
if they have the lead and try to control the lead against Toronto. But it was something that I think was a little bit
4:21
I wouldn't say it was concerning, but I think it was something that you have to do
4:25
if you have to get wins in this league, obviously. And even when they have a good first period, that's going to be a big tall task
4:32
especially as well when these two clubs meet up again on Tuesday night as well
4:36
Right. And, you know, Fetitav looked really shaky in the first period
4:41
You know, and I know in the beginning of the season, Coach said that his biggest worry was the goaltending
4:48
and, you know, he gave up that big rebound that they pounced on and scored
4:55
you know, that rebound went right back in the middle. So, you know, he needs to learn how to control that
4:59
But, you know, he did well in the second and third. But, you know, our biggest question into this year is the goaltending
5:06
And then you've got Harrison that's been injured. And then Kogosab hasn't been playing that well
5:12
And then, you know, he got Fetotop in there. So that's going to be a question mark going forward to see who actually
5:17
takes the second spot. I'll also be concerned about Harrison too because he's been injured
5:24
three times this year. It's a big question mark. The goaltending I think that's our biggest
5:30
weakness right now is the goaltending because there's not anything settled there
5:34
I agree. I think that's going to be the big tall test when it comes forward. Obviously
5:40
when they meet again on Tuesday obviously but when it comes to when they play again in future
5:45
references like and especially when your goaltenders are not playing to the capability of what
5:51
they're doing and especially what the team has to do as a whole had to deal with urson's injury
5:57
again it gonna be a tall task especially when these two clubs like play in future references maybe in the postseason as well yeah kind of add on to what Pavel saying you know like you see Fotodov tonight you might see Koleslav Tuesday night
6:15
So you're going to get a definite barometer of those two goaltenders against the same team to see which one had a better game
6:23
And it's good evaluation tool, especially for these young goaltenders, for the coaching staff to really view and be able to say, OK, who's taking the next step forward
6:34
And that's going to be a big difference, especially down the down the stretch for both leading into the break and leading into the trade deadline
6:46
You know, is this something where because it's difficult to carry three goaltenders
6:51
So it begs the question, are the Flyers seeing what backup or what goaltender out of the three steps forward to be the shining star or which one is on the chopping block to be the first sale of the selling season
7:11
Yeah, I agree, Joe. I think that's the one thing that you took out of it. The one thing I took out of it, too, is that it's kind of like we have the same problem over and over again with the goaltender situation
7:20
situation it's kind of like a broken record so it's like the same kind of thing that's been
7:25
happening over and over again but the Flyers did get a response though like you mentioned
7:29
uh Pavel uh Scott Long getting his first goal in quite a while and he nodded to score up at two
7:35
apiece yeah absolutely and and you know what in this second period it was it's been talked about
7:43
widely about how bad some of the Flyers second periods have been and they faced the team that
7:50
has notoriously this season and past two seasons been good at the second period and getting on top
7:59
of teams and burying teams before the third period it was nice to see the flyers be able to draw some
8:05
penalties and get the maple leafs into the box and be able to give themselves an advantage even
8:12
if they didn't score on them uh the first power play that was where lawton it was just after that
8:19
expired that long scored right so they were still riding that momentum and that um kind of uh gear
8:28
from the power play as it ended so that that was successful in that perspective at least in my mind
8:34
um but having that you know um having that second period be go as well as it did for the flyers the
8:44
hope is that they can continue that momentum going forward with those second periods because
8:51
if the second period is going to be the Flyers bugaboo it's going to make life
8:55
a lot more difficult for the Flyers going into third periods. Yeah definitely you don't want to
9:02
play from behind all the time but I think in that second period I think Fedotov actually kept us in
9:07
that game because he made those huge saves and then we got that goal I think they were negative
9:13
of 19, or minus 19 in the second period of fires, to come out with the one goal to tie
9:19
But I think Vethelhoff actually made it that way because he was really good in the second period
9:25
Yeah, he was. I do agree. And I think the one thing that really made me really intrigued about it is that the first
9:31
period was a little bit concerning, but he started to get better and better as the season went
9:36
Not the season, but obviously when the game went along, too. So that's a good, like I said, a good tone setter for that second period, though
9:44
But like I said, the Flyers lose tonight, but they got one point out of it
9:49
But the one thing I took out of this game, and I guess I can ask you guys this question
9:53
is that especially when these two clubs play again on Tuesday night
9:58
it's going to probably be a little bit of bad blood between the two clubs because obviously Nick Seeler getting a fight early on against, I think it was Jake McCabe
10:06
I think it was that went down with a fight. And so I can understand they're going to have a little bit of revenge in this
10:12
game on Tuesday night as well, especially like what Nick Seward did in that
10:16
first period. Oh, no, not Nick Seward. It was going at Hathaway, wasn't it? Hathaway, yeah
10:20
It was Hathaway. Yeah, it was Hathaway. I keep on – like they're just two goons
10:25
To be fair, the game – Also, too, that hit by Pacquaretty. Yeah
10:30
Tealer. Tealer, yeah. That could add to it, too. Yeah. Yeah, and the shot that McCabe took on Hathaway wasn't one that the ref saw
10:43
Yes, people will call it a dirty play, but as a person that played hockey
10:48
and was that kind of player, you get in your shots where you can
10:54
to get under the skin, get in the head of the opposing team
10:58
And that is a big, big – that is a psychological game that doesn't show up on the skill sheet
11:06
But here's the thing. Hathaway kind of lost his mind, went after McCabe
11:13
McCabe is a notorious fighter. He got a good shot in, and then it looked like Hathaway kind of tripped on to McCabe
11:22
and kind of like fell on top of McCabe. Yeah, I don't think it was intentional
11:26
Yeah, no. Yeah, I don't think it was intentional either. I think, honestly, like as a guy who's dropped the gloves more than once
11:35
sometimes if you don't have your weight on your back foot, your back skate
11:40
you're more liable to lose your balance moving forward, especially if you're throwing a hook or a cross
11:47
because your body weight is shifting forward. And so that potentially could have been what happened
11:55
and his he just wasn't set um and and and that that's why i feel like it wasn't intentional
12:02
but clearly you know mckay means a lot to the maple leaves so his teammates had to had to respond and later on patch already uh basically put Seeler into the boards pretty hard and made a statement
12:19
And it's going to make for an interesting game as far as the referees are going to have their
12:26
hands full at the barn come Tuesday. Yeah, it's going to be like Wes McCauley's favorite game, just having a bunch of guys
12:33
go out there fighting. But yeah, I do agree, Joe. That's the thing that's going to be a big, tall test
12:40
especially when these two clubs play again on Tuesday night, obviously. And I expect it won't be as bad as it once was
12:48
because I remember back in the day there was a time when Toronto and Philadelphia used to be back and forth
12:53
Like you think of the Darcy Tucker hit on Sammy Kapanen maybe. Yeah, Ty Domi too, right
12:59
Ty Domi, yeah, right, exactly. And also his son plays for them now too
13:03
Max Domi was actually believing I'd not seen him in the box And I was like saying, I don't think that's Max
13:08
I don't think that was tied to him with skin, but he actually toned it down a little bit. It's just the same
13:13
Yeah, at least he's not flipping off people while he's in the box
13:18
Correct. He was a dude that never wore a helmet too, right
13:23
He didn't wear a helmet in the beginning, did he, Tony? I don't remember. I don't mean
13:27
I think he did. I don't think he did at first. I think he was one of those guys that didn't in the early part of it
13:35
but that was when it was still legal to do it. Yeah
13:39
And, like, I remember he got into a fight with the guy from the Devils
13:46
and I'm blanking on his name right now. Scott Stevens? No, Scott Stevens
13:50
Stevens. Stevens. And he got into a fight with him, and Stevens caught him not just with, like
13:58
a front fist, but, like, he followed through to the point where he caught him
14:04
with his elbow and like busted Ty Tomey's face. And they were like, okay
14:11
And so when Ty hit, you know, fell backwards, his head, back of his head hit the ice
14:17
And that was when they were basically like, okay, we got to get you to wear your helmet
14:22
And he fought against it because he said, you know, it wasn't like an open ice hit
14:26
It wasn't like, you know, that bad. Yeah. Yeah. I guess the thing, too, is that maybe – I mean, I don't want to sound like I'm being rude here
14:37
but hopefully he's not – Max Domi's not in the penalty box, especially with that melee that happened back a long time ago
14:45
when a fan got involved in a fight with Domi. So it's a different circumstance here, though
14:50
Yeah, definitely. Let's give our grades for the game and who we want to consider our MVP
15:03
Yeah, Peve, you can go first, man. Overall, I'll say B, man
15:07
You know, I like the way they started out in the game. They got the lead in the game and the goal
15:13
You know, Fedotov played well after the first, second, third period. He did really well
15:20
That's the reason why we were in this game. And I like the way Bristow played as well
15:25
You know, to take Toronto, who's so highly skilled players and only give up two goals and lose in overtime, I'll take that
15:35
especially with the Flyers, they can kind of be building a young team. So I give it a B
15:40
Yeah. Hey, Joey, before you go, can you move your camera up a little bit, buddy
15:46
We lost you for a sec, man. My cat wants to get in on the action. Yeah
15:52
I can imagine he's the team mascot and all that. So, Joe, what's your grade for this game here tonight
16:00
So I would put the Flyers at about a B+. They played a good team
16:07
They played well through the course of the game. They never were down very much
16:12
It didn't seem like their energy was low. They came out and had 16 shots in the first period
16:19
which tells me that just because you're doing a lot doesn't always mean you're doing it well enough
16:28
Unfortunately, in hockey, unlike other sports, you can do as much as you want to do
16:34
It doesn't always mean that it's going to translate. Yeah, I mean, that's a very good point by you
16:42
I think for me, I got to go with – I'm in the same category as you guys
16:47
I got to go with B, B-plus too, because, I mean, that first period
16:52
seeing a lot of shots on goal for the Fars was like something that, like it's something that was normal for them for the first time in quite a while
16:59
And I think that's going to be the tall task, especially going forward
17:03
especially when you're taking on good teams like Toronto and even Dallas coming up on that Ed Snyder legacy game on Thursday night
17:10
So it'll be a good reminder that sometimes like getting a good tall task
17:15
against very good teams. I mean, they played very well tonight. And I think that was the one thing I was really intrigued about, too, in this game
17:21
So I got to go with a B-plus, too. And you also got to remember, you got the Panthers, too
17:25
Yes. And then the Cutter Goutier. Oh, the Ducks, yeah. We got Cutter Goutier coming back to Innotown
17:35
So there's going to be a lot in this four-game homestand. And it's good to kind of get back off of this road streak
17:42
um my mvp for tonight has to be tyson forrester this is a guy that is starting to come on
17:50
and i've said this before about other players whether it's morgan frost or nolan cates
17:56
or you know even with owen tippett there are certain guys that you want to see thrive
18:04
and and tyson forrester is starting to shine out and i'm liking what i'm seeing from this guy he's
18:12
got good you know ice vision when it comes down to seeing the ice as a whole He not just looking and he doesn have just tunnel vision He not just snipering away and just hoping that a puck lands
18:26
in the back of the net. He's being very calculated, and I like what I'm seeing from the youngster
18:34
Yeah, and I guess I agree too is that he's been on a tear. He's been red hot as of lately, and what better way to get another goal tonight
18:41
especially against a good Toronto team. So I think for me, I got to go with the MVP is that, you know, I mean
18:50
Fedotov did play well. I would give him the most applause on that because that first period was shaky
18:56
But after that, he really toned it down, especially basically Mitch Marner trying to basically do some dangles and stuff
19:03
and also keep him in check. So I think Fedotov played very well tonight
19:08
So I got to go with the goaltender, especially losing Sam Erson during the week and him stepping in
19:14
after a bad outing with Kolesov on Thursday night against the Golden Knights
19:19
So I'm going to give my MVP to Ivan Fedotov, sending this game into overtime
19:23
Not winning the game, though, but obviously a very good reminder to come into this game on Tuesday night with a lot more
19:32
I mean, it was one thing I was really intrigued about in this game here tonight. Yeah, definitely agree
19:37
But I will go with Bristow Lyon. Two assists, multiple big hits
19:43
He was involved in both goals. A lot of shots on that
19:49
I think he played really well tonight. So I'm going with Risto. Yeah, that's the one thing I take out of it, too
19:55
And before we go, quickly, let's do our quick reminder. Let's do this
20:02
So the Flyers, again, will play again on Tuesday night against Toronto. So quickly, what is your – what would be the one thing you'll be looking
20:11
What's the one thing you'll be looking forward to in this matchup here against these two clubs on Tuesday night as they meet this time in South Philadelphia
20:20
Well, I'll be looking for them to continue the momentum and not not dropping off
20:25
getting out to an early and fast start and trying to capitalize on this Toronto Maple Leafs team that, you know, number one, you you had them coming off a back to back
20:38
This was the second game of a back to back. now they're going to have to travel now they're going on the road my thing is if the flyers can
20:47
get on top of them whether it's tyson forrester or somebody else in the first period and keep the
20:53
pedal to the metal uh i think that they can give this team a run for their money it's like i said
21:00
to pat the other day when we did the post game for uh the vegas you know i see them splitting Toronto
21:09
I think they lost tonight, so I think they win on Tuesday
21:14
Yeah, that's a good reminder too. Peva, what about you, man? Going off of Joe too, I think we need another
21:23
strong start. I'm assuming Kolasov is going to get the start probably
21:29
I don't know how long. How long is Erickson out for a while? Do you know how long? I think it's for a couple more weeks
21:35
I don't think it's anything severe. I heard two or three more weeks he's out
21:39
All right, so, you know, Kolasov was on the bench today, and he saw how Fedotov played
21:45
Now it's his turn to shine. So if he gets a start, I need to see a much better game from him
21:51
than against the Vegas Knights and a strong start like we did tonight
21:55
and jump on them and keep it to like a 2-1, 3-2 kind of a game
21:59
to give us a chance against this kind of team. Yeah, I agree
22:03
That's the thing I took out of it too, is that especially this game tonight is a very good
22:09
I keep on saying it, but I keep on reminding myself that it's a very good boost
22:14
to get Toronto right where they won them, but at the same time
22:18
I mean, you've got to get the two points out of it. But one point is better than nothing. That's the one thing I take out of it tonight too
22:24
All right, let's go into our quick around the National Hockey League on this last game of the night
22:29
Obviously, it's a rare Sunday night, but it's good to know that the Flyers and the Eagles played earlier
22:36
So it's good to know that we can look forward to that matchup as well going into the week
22:40
All right, quick around the national for those games here tonight. Blackhawks winning
22:44
I'm sorry, the Rangers winning for the first time in a while on Chicago
22:48
That was a 6-2 final. Islanders in an overtime final of 5-4 in Boston
22:54
Pittsburgh losing to Carolina 4-3 in overtime in a rally. the Ducks right now are winning
23:01
2-1 over the Tampa Bay Lightning and quicker round the National Hockey tomorrow
23:06
as the Capitals take on the Sabres Canadians against the Canucks Panthers taking on the Avalanche
23:14
and to close it out tonight it will be the Devils taking on the Kraken
23:18
I'd be interested to watch that Panthers game that's going to be a good game
23:25
Yeah, I think I might be looking forward to that matchup as well. So that's going to wrap us up here for this Third Line George Flyers postgame show
23:34
I'm going to thank once again my good friend Joey Marks for joining us once again here tonight on his very important areas
23:40
And also, Pavel, thanks a lot for joining us tonight, my friend. I really do appreciate it
23:44
