WWII's Deadliest Naval Battle: Midway in 4 Minutes
Mar 12, 2026
In just four minutes, the course of the Pacific War changed forever.
On June 4, 1942, during the Battle of Midway, American SBD Dauntless dive bombers found the Japanese carrier fleet at the worst possible moment — while aircraft were refueling and rearming on deck.
Within minutes, bombs struck three Japanese carriers — Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu. A fourth carrier would be destroyed later that day. The loss of these carriers shattered Japan’s offensive naval power and marked a decisive turning point in the Pacific War.
