today I want to cover a topic that a lot
0:01
of you have asked about and it happens
0:03
to be a topic I'm incredibly passionate
0:07
about there's something about plants
0:09
that make me so happy I feel like it's
0:12
like you brought a little piece of
0:13
nature outside into your house or into
0:15
your Works Space it just livens the
0:17
space up gives it some more color and
0:19
when you see a plant Thrive that you've
0:21
given tender love and care it's just
0:22
such a rewarding feeling I remember when
0:25
we first got the studio space the first
0:26
thing I told Robin was that I wanted to
0:28
turn it into a bit of a jungle so we
0:30
went to the nursery and we loaded up on
0:32
lots and lots and lots of
0:49
[Music]
0:51
plants so today's video is kind of like
0:53
a beginner's guide on how to take care
0:55
of host plants for anybody who feels
0:57
like you just keep killing them and you
0:58
don't know why or maybe just looking for
1:00
some new pointers a lot of what I'm
1:02
actually sharing today are things that
1:03
my mom shared with me as I was growing
1:05
up but everyone has a different way of
1:07
doing things so if you have any
1:08
recommendations of your own I welcome
1:10
you to share that in the comments below
1:12
and I also want to take a brief moment
1:13
to thank Wix for partnering with us on
1:15
today's video Wix is the amazing
1:17
platform that we use to create and host
1:19
the vup blims website I'll speak more
1:21
about them at the end but for now let's
1:23
dive
1:25
in before you go to the plan store it's
1:27
important to know exactly where in your
1:29
house or in your Works Space space you
1:30
want that plant to go is there a lot of
1:32
sun is there shade what is the
1:33
temperature situation like that way when
1:35
you're at the plant store you can check
1:37
the tag to see if it's going to be an
1:38
appropriate match and while you're at
1:40
the plant store anyway there's also
1:41
another couple things you might want to
1:45
consider so when you found a really
1:47
beautiful healthy plant that you know is
1:48
the one that you want to take home one
1:50
of the things I recommend doing is very
1:52
gently take the plant out of the pot
1:54
just to see what the root situation is
1:56
like here you can see that there's a
1:57
whole bunch of roots along the outside
1:59
and on the bottom so it might be a good
2:01
idea to just buy a larger inner pot that
2:04
you can then transfer it to you can also
2:06
look for a nice outer pot that will fit
2:08
the repotted plant while you're still at
2:10
the
2:15
[Music]
2:18
nursery it's incredibly important that
2:20
the pot that your plant is in has holes
2:22
because we need the water to be able to
2:23
drain but not all pots of holes are
2:25
created equal like this one for example
2:27
also has holes but there's a valley
2:29
beneath the holes and this is a place
2:31
where water can collect and the problem
2:33
with water collecting is it can cause
2:35
the roots to rot which might mean the
2:36
plant could eventually die so the point
2:39
here we want to make sure we get a pot
2:40
with holes at the bottommost point of
2:42
the
2:44
container so when we were at the nursery
2:46
we talked about the importance of
2:48
repotting plants that have outgrown
2:49
their current home but a lot of plants
2:51
don't take well to a change in their
2:53
environment I'm going to share with you
2:54
a technique that my mom taught me and it
2:56
works really really well essentially all
2:58
you do is first wet the soil before
3:00
adding it to the new pot so you want it
3:01
to be moist enough that it sticks
3:03
together but you don't want it to be
3:04
dripping wet either and the reason that
3:06
this works is it encourages the roots to
3:08
go out and explore this new wet
3:10
territory and it helps it to settle into
3:12
its new environment a little bit better
3:14
then we'll transfer the soil along the
3:15
bottom and the sides of the new pot will
3:17
gently remove the plant from its Nursery
3:19
container and transfer it to its new
3:21
home and add some extra soil around the
3:23
sides and along the top you can gently
3:25
press down on it as well but not too
3:27
much cuz we want to give the roots some
3:29
room to Branch out and then at the very
3:31
end we're going to water it just a
3:32
little bit so that the old soil gets a
3:34
bit of moisture as
3:39
[Music]
3:43
well overwatering and underwatering
3:46
plants is probably the single most
3:47
common reason why a lot of house plants
3:49
die but every plant is very specific
3:51
when it comes to its watering
3:52
requirements but there are a few
3:54
important rules of thumb that might help
3:56
for one you want the soil to get pretty
3:58
dry between waterings so just use your
4:00
finger to see what the soil situation is
4:01
like a couple centimet into its depth if
4:04
it's still moist you can skip watering
4:06
but if it's dry I like to water it until
4:08
I see just a bit of water coming out
4:10
onto the base plate if a pool collects I
4:12
just drain it off because a lot of
4:14
plants don't like to have wet feet and
4:16
now a lot of people know that plants
4:17
need more frequent watering in the
4:18
spring and summer months and less
4:20
frequent watering in the winter months
4:21
but one thing a lot of people Miss is
4:23
they also have a preference when it
4:25
comes to water temperature in the summer
4:27
they like it when the water is a cooler
4:29
temperature and in the winter they like
4:30
it when the water is at room
4:33
temperature so we all know that house
4:35
plants need soil and good light and some
4:38
water in order to thrive but one thing
4:40
that can commonly be missed is the
4:41
fertilizer which is the plant's food now
4:44
every plant is different but in the
4:45
spring and summer usually they need to
4:47
be fed every 2 to 4 weeks I usually do
4:49
it every two weeks but in the winter
4:51
it's in its rest period so usually they
4:53
don't need any feeding at all during
4:55
that time I just use this Universal
4:56
liquid variety that works on all of our
4:58
house plants
5:01
some plants work well in the sun some
5:03
work well in the shade but regardless
5:05
all of them need some source of natural
5:07
light now in the darker winter months
5:09
you might need to move your plants
5:10
towards a light source but generally
5:12
speaking plants don't like to be moved
5:14
they get accustomed to the environment
5:16
that they're in so move your plants if
5:17
you have to but otherwise just let them
5:21
be the other consideration with plants
5:24
is the temperature you want to make sure
5:25
you keep it within a range that it's
5:27
comfortable at keep in mind that plants
5:29
in front of Windows see pretty varying
5:30
temperatures depending on the weather
5:32
outside as well as plants that are by
5:34
air conditioning units or radiators now
5:36
if you find this all really overwhelming
5:38
to keep track of we actually created a
5:39
free PDF for you that might help out a
5:41
little bit in addition to some tips
5:43
there's a page that you can use to
5:44
document the needs of each of your
5:46
plants that you can then later refer to
5:47
in case you've forgotten and there's
5:49
also a plant watering tracker so to get
5:51
your PDF check out the link in the
5:52
description box
5:55
below insects and bugs Love dead in
5:58
decaying foliage so be sure sure to
6:00
remove any rotting or dying leaves that
6:02
are just sitting on top of the soil and
6:04
whenever I see leaves that are visibly
6:05
about to die I just prune the plant by
6:07
cutting these off so they don't steal
6:09
essential nutrients from the leaves that
6:11
are continuing to
6:14
thrive while you're Watering your plants
6:16
just take a quick second to inspect the
6:18
leaves to see if there's any signs of
6:19
any insects or bugs and if there are you
6:22
want to deal with these right away you
6:23
might notice little webs or insects that
6:25
look like fruit flies or these bugs that
6:27
look like they're covered in cotton and
6:29
if you don't know what it is you can
6:30
take a picture into your local nursery
6:31
for some help or search it up online for
6:34
a lot of the different kinds of pests I
6:36
usually just spray the leaves with a bit
6:37
of soap and water solution and then wipe
6:39
it clean using a damp cloth you might
6:41
need to repeat this a couple of times
6:43
but it usually does the trick whenever
6:45
you're dealing with plants don't be
6:46
discouraged if you try something new and
6:48
it doesn't work some plants just die
6:50
it's the circle of life but you're going
6:51
to get better at it each time and
6:53
remember you can always also match your
6:55
comfort and skill set level to the kind
6:56
of plant that you're going for for
6:58
example something like succulents and
7:00
pathos those are a lot easier to take
7:02
care of they're less fussy than some of
7:04
the other plants now if you learned
7:06
something new in today's video If you
7:07
enjoyed it I welcome you to give it a
7:09
thumbs up it always means a lot when you
7:10
do and remember to also get your free
7:13
plant care guide PDF the link is in the
7:15
description box below and I also again
7:17
want to thank Wix for partnering with us
7:19
on today's video I've been getting lots
7:20
of emails from you guys lately saying
7:22
that you've created the website and blog
7:24
that you've always wanted to create
7:25
using their platform that makes me
7:27
really happy to hear cuz I remember
7:29
those early stages feeling really
7:30
overwhelmed when I wanted to create my
7:32
own website and I didn't know where to
7:34
begin and with Wix it's just as easy as
7:36
drag and drop and you get a website that
7:38
looks super professional they're also
7:40
always adding new templates and features
