0:02
hi good evening it's Ray from Pro shaper
0:05
Workshop we're looking at Scott's
0:08
Bugatti atlantique it brought this from
0:11
all the way up from
0:13
Waco Texas drove it uh with it behind
0:16
his uh Dodge Ram pickup he had a trailer
0:20
he made a it's an open trailer he made a
0:23
wooden box for it he built this frame
0:26
for this Bugatti we'll do a little bit
0:28
of detail shot of the frame in a minute
0:31
and loaded this up as a wire form that's
0:34
welded right on the frame
0:37
uh he learned about the wire form from
0:39
my video channel my YouTube channel
0:42
prior to that he was using a plywood
0:46
buck that he foamed and then surfaced
0:50
with the plaster which was a long ordeal
0:53
and he was going to use just profile
0:57
gauges to make all the panels until he
0:59
had a conversation on the phone with me
1:01
and then he purchased a 13-day class
1:05
which starts at the four day class which
1:07
was the September class and he got a
1:10
Little Help From a few people in the
1:12
September class to make these panels and
1:15
uh first thing we did is make paper
1:16
patents but we don't make the paper
1:19
patents like everybody else we I I call
1:21
them Proto flexible shape patterns we
1:24
slice them and tape them up and that
1:26
will give you the initial information to
1:30
start the panel and then once you get
1:32
the panel rolling maybe up to about 80
1:35
percent of development or so then you
1:37
can start fitting it to the wire form
1:39
and the wire form will tell you exactly
1:42
what you need to do just like the
1:44
flexible shape pattern tells you exactly
1:46
what to do but we can't do a flexible
1:48
shape pattern on this because we don't
1:49
have any surfaces he's going to bring
1:52
this back he's going to be here for an
1:54
additional I think four more days after
1:57
Wednesday Wednesdays is last day he
1:59
bought a 13-day class and he's so he's
2:03
got two more full days to do detail work
2:05
on these panels and then he's going to
2:07
have four more days and leave Monday
2:10
morning Sunday will be his end here at
2:13
the class
2:14
and he's had help from a couple people
2:17
and a little bit of help here and there
2:20
from me I always just give you verbal
2:22
guidance at the class pretty much if I
2:24
have to I'll do Hands-On but I did very
2:27
little Hands-On most of this I'd say 80
2:29
80 of all these panels have been done by
2:32
Scott he has his own English wheel he's
2:35
taken a bunch of other classes but he
2:38
learned a ton here and It sped the whole
2:40
process up he just told me he would
2:42
probably take another 20 years to to
2:44
finish this car and he's the same age as
2:46
me he's 72. so it was quite possible it
2:49
would have been a project that maybe
2:50
never got finished but now he can see
2:52
this project actually coming to uh an
2:57
end and and be completed and all these
3:00
panels will need to be welded there's a
3:02
few little spots that need to be picked
3:04
up yet well let's I'll give you a I'm in
3:07
a little scooter here my little uh uh
3:10
creeper sit down creeper and I'll scoot
3:12
around and show you some of the panels
3:15
that are on the con now and a lot of
3:18
them have the flanges on them already
3:20
he's tipped all the flanges and fit them
3:23
really nicely to the the wire form this
3:25
is the first panel he made here and then
3:28
this panel here was started by a guy I
3:32
believe Paul was his name only came for
3:33
one day
3:35
um I might be wrong on that it might
3:36
have been the next panel and then he had
3:39
to tune it totally
3:40
and then there's another panel this
3:42
third panel I think I worked about I did
3:45
probably 40 percent of the development
3:47
on that third panel and then we have the
3:50
over the door panel which was done by
3:53
another student for the poor day class
3:55
but uh he's a 13-day class guy he works
3:58
at Enfield Restoration in Connecticut he
4:01
had very little experience and he's
4:03
doing really well and he did the four
4:06
days and then he's coming in here and
4:07
there when he has time to now Scott
4:10
rolled out this door skin the other day
4:14
and you can see how nice a job that is
4:16
it's a very low Crown panel and it's
4:19
almost Flawless the lower rocker panels
4:23
and stuff are pretty easy they have a
4:26
little bit of shape or area development
4:29
in them and then he's got this cowl
4:31
panel
4:32
that we just did I helped him out a
4:35
little bit with that
4:36
uh one of the advantages of a wire form
4:39
is uh there was a flange around the
4:43
windshield and it has a a tight radius
4:45
if you clamp it all down with vice grips
4:48
and we put these little protectors so
4:49
you don't bite into the into the metal
4:52
you can clamp it down support the wire
4:56
form a little bit by bucking it up Scott
4:59
actually held the the wire form with
5:02
some wood to give it a little substance
5:05
and then I just took a nice body hammer
5:07
and a torch and you heat the metal up to
5:09
400 Degrees where it's got a flange and
5:12
you can Hammer form it right on the wire
5:15
form it makes really short work of
5:18
really difficult little detail work
5:20
and you see this above the door panel
5:23
that Tom had done
5:26
so far we've just got probably about 95
5:29
percent development maybe 90 development
5:31
it still needs the flanges to be put in
5:34
and he's going to be back Sunday and
5:36
maybe he'll complete that
5:39
um
5:40
the roof panel is close that was done by
5:44
Andrew Ward who's a professional coach
5:47
Builder and we just didn't have a chance
5:50
to put it in tonight it still needs a
5:52
little bit of work around the edges and
5:54
down around the windshield and a lot of
5:56
flanging that has to happen on it so but
5:59
it's really close but you can see
6:02
in 11 days
6:04
he has
6:06
pretty much half of the cockpit
6:09
totally finished except for the welding
6:12
and then the middle Metal Finishing in a
6:14
little bit of uh flanging that still has
6:17
to happen on the panel so there'll be
6:19
all the panels will have to be trimmed
6:21
and then tacked and then take them off
6:24
and you can tack them right on the wire
6:27
form so everything stays in alignment
6:29
it's such a really nice system and uh
6:33
you know Scots really come to appreciate
6:36
the value of the wire form it's just an
6:39
amazing tool and a lot of people are
6:41
reluctant to try a wire form because
6:43
they think a wood bucket is so simple
6:45
and that's what they see is wood bucks
6:47
wood bucks wood bucks wood bucks well if
6:50
you compare direct direct to direct
6:53
direct comparison between wood buck and
6:55
a wire form you will and work with them
6:58
you will actually see the advantage of
7:00
the wire form it might take a little
7:02
longer to actually make it all perfect
7:07
Scott had the advantage of how having a
7:09
full surface buck that he had made with
7:12
the plaster spent a lot of time gooping
7:14
on the plaster and sanding plaster and
7:16
then he took the profiles off of it and
7:18
those profiles enabled him to do the
7:21
wires
7:22
so he knew all that already he's been
7:25
boat building through the years and
7:27
everything he's really a skilled guy he
7:29
follows directions really good and
7:31
that's super important if I give you
7:32
directions don't go off and try to do
7:34
something different
7:35
uh unless you verbally describe it and
7:38
if you describe it and it sounds better
7:40
than what I I use as standard practice I
7:43
will change my mind in two seconds
7:45
that's the way I operate
7:47
but most of the time I've made every
7:50
mistake in the book and I I know uh
7:53
what's the best way to to do a
7:55
particular tasks and he's just on a
7:58
beautiful beautiful job on this when it
8:00
gets all welded together I mean this is
8:01
quality that is as good as any really
8:05
accomplished metal shape or anywhere in
8:08
the world would uh there would be lucky
8:11
to have this kind of quality I mean the
8:13
panels are all super high finish and uh
8:19
you know I just said to Scott I says
8:21
where else can you take a class where
8:24
else where else in the entire world can
8:27
you take a class bring a project such as
8:30
this Bugatti and make these quality of
8:34
panels use all the the tools that I have
8:37
and my knowledge
8:39
for as little as a hundred and twenty
8:41
five dollars a day that's what Scott
8:43
paid to come up here and learn what he's
8:46
learned and uh I think he's going to do
8:49
a magnificent job on the rest of the car
8:52
I have full faith in him and uh I just
8:55
want to give you a little quick uh
8:58
interview with with Scott is Scott here
9:01
and Scott I just I know you didn't
9:04
really want to be interviewed but but I
9:08
saw this coming he started coming he
9:10
said so uh well you're just give a brief
9:14
overview of your experience here so far
9:16
that I haven't covered
9:19
well it my expectation was that I I
9:22
would come and be able to to actually
9:24
build the panels onto the onto the wire
9:28
form
9:29
and have them at a quality that was
9:32
acceptable or better and um so I've I've
9:36
been I've been surprised this is really
9:38
my first time doing anything this large
9:40
I've done a few small projects but but
9:43
nothing this large and I and I've really
9:45
come to appreciate the
9:48
um the wire form and the fact that you
9:51
don't need a a whole massive Shop full
9:54
of tools to to make these these panels
9:57
and they're a couple of them are pretty
9:59
complicated so
10:02
this is all garage work with uh you know
10:05
with with a a little knowledge and a
10:07
little practice and good guidance
10:10
um this is all very doable
10:13
so
10:14
I
10:15
this is probably my my first time here I
10:18
have I have plans for some other cars
10:21
that uh when sis gets a little further
10:23
along I'll probably come back and and do
10:25
another one but I'd like to come back
10:27
and maybe build the part of the
10:30
wireframe here rather than do it at home
10:33
so I'd like that to be part of the
10:34
experience too yeah well you're always
10:36
welcome here Scott you're a real
10:38
pleasure to have at the shop everybody's
10:40
enjoyed your stay here and we've still
10:42
got uh uh a whole week here to follow up
10:46
so uh we're gonna get a lot done I guess
10:49
so
10:50
so this is Ray from Pro shaper Workshop
10:54
remember to subscribe give us the
10:55
comments uh don't comment about when am
10:57
I going to get the Porsche panel done or
10:59
when am I going to get the Healey panel
11:01
done those are on the back burner we're
11:03
working on the Bugatti we're working on
11:05
the Studebaker Future car uh make your
11:07
comments if you're going to make your
11:08
comments about what the video is I want
11:11
to thank you for watching and tell
11:13
everybody you know about brochapa
