1948 Studebaker Future Car Build
Andrew from New Zealand has been at the shop for 3 weeks and has been working on the 1948 Studebaker Future Car designed by Virgil Exner. Andrew worked on the front nose section using aluminum. He made 4 panels and then TIG welded the section together. When he finished welding, he planished the weld using a slapper and dolly.

ago so we did the full-scale drawings

with our drawing board with the the

adjustable magnet system and the drawing

is very rudimentary there's no facility

or anything it's just a concept drawing

to scale it and there was no design for

steel body and I was using those only as

learning exercises for the students

students enough now to use the aluminum

and if they make a mistake I've learned

through the years that I can correct

and prior to that you had done a lot of

welding in New Zealand yeah yeah so he's

got about 20 years of welding and

fabricating under his belt now

fabricating means taking thicker pieces

of metal and they've stick welded them

together and Mig welded them together

but actual sheet metal Automotive sheet

metal very little on none right yeah and

you do have a little English wheel

similar to like a Harbor Freight English

wheel yeah for a short period yeah and

you played around with it you really

didn't understand it yeah I was kind of

going backwards a bit and yeah making a

lot of mistakes so he's done really well

in the uh the mining industry and he's

moving back to New Zealand and he's

looking to see what he's going to do

um he's got a brother that's actually a

these eccentric videos using two-cycle

gas engines and uh so Andrew was um

intrigued with what the potential was

with working with the English wheel

and he thought it would be a good thing

to do is come over to the U.S and and

take a class from me and I asked him if

he would be interested in working on the

Studebaker because I want to get

something done on it now I had another

student make

this panel that's going to go right in

here as you see there's no wire form

right there because you can you lift

we Andrew has made these panels

and this is my system that I developed

where you can make these joints for the

wire form and they bolt right together

so this was all welded together but when

you make the panels and you want to take

the panel off it's impossible because

it's mechanically locked on with flanges

so the only way you can do it is destroy

the wire form but if you use these
5:37
little joints which are simple little

you know we weld up a couple Square nuts

and we get the threads that way so we
5:44
don't have to thread anything then we
5:45
got a little piece of Steel here with

two holes and it joins with its its
5:50
brother over here you put a quarter

twenty bolt in it and boom the whole
5:54
thing goes right back perfectly and that

allows you by removing that you can take

off the panel that he made Andrew was

faced when he first came here with this

panel was already done by another

student and the panel below it was done

by another student but this one was it

really needed to be remade so he had to

remake that one he had to make this one

and this one and the one that was below

here he pretty much had to redo the

thing to get it totally symmetrical and

uh good quality on the surface

I said here's what Andrew did and it's

as good as it gets this is world-class

quality some of the best shape is in the

world would struggle on this panel now

it's taken Andrew a lot of time it's

been what about two or three weeks

he made a few mistakes but

not that many and he learned how to

correct them and he's a real

perfectionist and he's an excellent TIG

welder so he hadn't done much aluminum

welding at all prior to this but he

picked it up real quick

and he's got this all welded together

there's a little bit of planishing to be

done this was welded last night and this

still needs to be planished I don't

his first time he ever shaped sheet

metal too this is 0.63 aluminum uh he

didn't do the welding he wasn't

proficient enough in the welding I did

the welding but all that shaping was

done by Martin and all the shaping on

the front was done by Andrew

a lot of people think oh yeah well Ray

probably does the whole thing and then

takes the picture you know no that's not

the case this is totally student built

and that's the way I want it so that

it's a testimony to

results this craft is is a really

complicated craft if you're coming in at
