Hi, it's Ray Chalene. I want to show you a few things tonight
0:04
First off, I want to show you this, what I call a shrinking facilitator, formerly known as a stump
0:12
It's not right or correct to call this a stump because it's really not a stump
0:19
It's just a regular standard construction lumber with a perimeter box. You make that first and then you modular build the inside with the same construction lumber
0:31
You cut that to different profiles start in the center and Then you work you get your center one in you put the next ones in you can mark it with a magic marker cut that
0:45
it makes it sort of segmented then you can grind it smooth and
0:49
I've got about six of these in the shop now and And during my coach building class. I show the value of these enables you to shrink
0:59
without very inexpensive equipment One of the things you do need is a really good mallet. I make these mallets. They're for sale on my website
1:09
proshaper.com Here's a piece of aluminum and we're going to show you how you can shrink with this
1:21
shrinking facilitator So I'm using the the blunt end of the mallet right now
1:28
I'm gonna drive it into this And you can see what happens
1:34
Is it pops up? These spontaneous gathers Now this is really light aluminum for the purpose of the videotape or the video I want to Dramatize what happens so the old 50 or aluminum most 60 aluminum It do the same thing you gonna have to use a little more effort to do it
1:58
You can anneal the aluminum if you want it'll do it with steel to
2:02
The surface here. I've got coated with It's an asphalt product that they use on roofing and
2:10
I just happened to find a remnant of it and I tried it and what that does is protect the lumber
2:16
So the lumber doesn't get beat up so much the lumber does get beat up after a while
2:21
Because it's module you can just take the screws out take the piece that gets chewed up a little bit and replace that
2:30
A lot of people can't get hot wood around the world in different locations
2:35
You can get construction lumber and it's pretty inexpensive Expensive So it is all you gather now, this is a very narrow motorcycle fender
2:53
You can make this depression a lot bigger and make a wider
3:00
fender So now what we'll do is crush up some of these
3:08
spontaneous gathers and you'll see the The classic motorcycle fender shape just start to take place in front of your eyes
3:18
So there's a little bit of stretching going on when you hit in the center of the panel, but most of this is all shrinking
3:24
Now what you got to be careful of is you get a situation like this where it wants to go over on you So that requires a little special treatment you got to take and wedge it on the edge of the piece of hardwood or something
3:49
This is the real stuff down here and you can open that up. So it's not going to tip over on you
4:36
And I'm choking up on the handle of the mallet right now. I don't need the full force of the mallet
4:57
very little effort If it was all 50 or 60 put put a little more effort in it
5:03
I'm just kind of delicately balanced on top of a real stump here. So it's kind of jumping around
5:27
You got total control over the process you saw I didn have a gather there so I just went back Hamm it it boom it popped right in
5:37
I said when get a little steep just put them up on the flat I
5:45
Don't have a gather here so I know didn't shrink there so Pop one right in
5:57
So there's the Defender starting to take shape the Just a rough shape right now
6:08
one of the penalties of using this asphalt is that it will leave a little residue and you can't let that get on your English wheel
6:15
rollers, so after doing your stretching and shrinking here in the in the shrinking facilitator
6:24
you're going to take lacquer thinner and Clean this black tar off now
6:30
This when you first put it on is actually got a sticky surface to it and it actually holds the piece
6:38
Which is a nice little feature of using this asphalt based product
6:43
This one's got a lot of dust on it. So it's lost a lot of its stickiness
6:47
it does come with a Sticky backing that allows it to stick onto the wood. It's easy to come off later
6:56
When it gets all beat up this one still got a long way to go Like I said it saves the wood quite a bit so the next step will be
7:07
cleaning this asphalt residue off and Then we'll smooth this out in the harbor freight wheel which I've converted with my pro shaper
7:17
Upgrade kit and I'll show you how that works
