The mythological significance of Manikaran Shiv Temple
There is an interesting mythological story associated with the establishment of the Manikaran Shiv Temple, which makes this place even more remarkable. According to the legend, in ancient times, when Goddess Parvati was playing in the river, her earring fell into the water and was carried away by the current. Lord Shiva sent his attendants to find the earring, but it had been swept away to the netherworld. Enraged, Lord Shiva opened his third eye, causing the river water to boil. This anger caused the river water to boil and created a great commotion in the atmosphere.
At that moment, Naina Devi appeared and prayed to Sheshnag to retrieve the earring for Lord Shiva. Sheshnag obliged and showered the earth with jewels, allowing Goddess Parvati to recover her lost earring. This is why the place became known as 'Karnaphool' (earring). The religious significance of this place increased because it was the very spot where Lord Shiva received the earring from Sheshnag after opening his third eye.
